El subjuntivo en la historia de la gramática española (1771-1973), del Dr. Alfonso Zamorano Aguilar, profesor del Área de Lingüística General de la Universidad de Córdoba, supone una contribución muy valiosa al ámbito de la historiografía de la lingüística y, más específicamente, a la gramaticografía del español. La obra está divida en seis capítulos y en ella se acomete, en primer término, una revisión y análisis del concepto ''subjuntivo'' -así como de otras unidades con él relacionadas: ''modo verbal'', ''modalidad lingüística'', etc.- en el panorama lingüístico actual (máximo años 20 del siglo XX). En los capítulos restantes se lleva a cabo un minucioso y concienzudo estudio del subjuntivo en la historia de la gramática española desde 1771 hasta 1973, fechas que coinciden, respectivamente, con la primera gramática de la RAE y el último tratado publicado por dicha institución, el Esbozo. Así pues, a partir de un corpus de 64 gramáticas, se aborda el análisis de (a) las estructuras formales (a través de un método estadístico propio, como posible aporte a la metodología de la disciplina) y criterios de definición del ''subjuntivo'' en el período acotado; (b) el subjuntivo y su relación con el resto de modos del sistema español, deducibles en virtud de los diversos programas teóricos presentes en el corpus; (c) estudio del contraste establecido entre la definición general aportada por cada gramático y los ejemplos empleados para su materialización; (d) el subjuntivo en función del tipo de estructura sintáctica en la que se encuadra; (e) la categoría ''tiempo'' en el subjuntivo español (1771-1973): concepto y análisis de las unidades que lo integran.
