Excerpt from Case Histories in Neurology: A Selection of Histories Setting Forth the Diagnosis, Treatment and Post-Mortem Findings in Nervous Disease The object of this book is to set forth in practical form, on the basis of the Case System, certain fundamental facts regarding the symptomatology, diagnosis, treatment and pathological findings in the more frequent disorders of the nervous system. To accomplish this end, actual cases illustrating definite disease processes or predominating symptoms are narrated in some detail, followed by such explanatory remarks as the individual case demands. Attention has also been given to the important matter of differential diagnosis. The arrangement of the cases has followed the time-honored and useful if somewhat inaccurate anatomical method of division into, (1) peripheral, (2) spinal cord and (3) brain diseases, followed by (4) those for which a definite anatomical basis has not yet been found, and (5) by affections characterized by disorders of function, the neuroses. Very brief explanatory sections on principles of diagnosis and treatment precede and follow the main divisions of the subject matter, which in no way interferes with the primary object of presenting to the reader case histories on the principle developed for medicine by Prof. W. B. Cannon and later put into practical operation by many teachers in Boston and elsewhere. I am indebted to Miss Florence L. Spaulding for assistance in the illustration of the book. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases of the Nervous System Diseases of the nervous system, like those of the heart, lungs, and larynx, require Special means of investigation and treatment. In no department of medical science has progress been more decided during the last decade than in that class of affections considered in this trea tise, and undoubtedly a great deal of the advancement is due to the instruments and apparatus by Which scientific research in this direction has become practicable. In the present chapter I propose to describe the instruments and apparatus employed in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the nervous system, and to explain the methods by Which they are used. Multiple Sclerosis written by Gary L. Birnbaum and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-01 with Medical categories.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, often progressive, and potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system. Onset of disease is usually between the ages of 15 and 50, with the incidence nearly twice as high in women. While the cause of MS is still unknown, the predominant theory is that it is an autoimmune disease, triggered by an unknown environmental factor that results in both loss of central nervous system myelin and degeneration of axons and neurons. Although there have been a number of publications addressing different aspects of MS treatment in the neurological literature, there is a dearth of material on MS designed for internists and primary care physicians, who are often the first to see patients presenting with symptoms of MS. Therefore, this concise, clinically focused volume will serve as a valuable resource tailored to the specific needs of internists and primary care physicians. Part of the Oxford Neurology Library, this highly practical pocketbook covers current approaches and new developments in the diagnosis, treatment and management of MS, including both early and advanced stages of the disease. The book offers in-depth coverage of special populations, as well as the more unusual manifestations of MS, which are less familiar to the internal medicine audience. It will also address the role of imaging studies in the diagnosis, differential diagnosis and monitoring of the progression of MS. In addition to providing up-to-date information on pharmacological therapies for MS, the book also describes an array of non-pharmacological treatment options.

Objective Biometric Methods for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Nervous System Disorders provides a new and unifying methodological framework, introducing new objective biometrics to characterize patterns of sensory motor control underlying symptoms. Its goal is to radically transform the ways in which disorders of the nervous system are currently diagnosed, tracked, researched and treated. This book introduces new ways to bring the laboratory to the clinical setting, to schools and to settings of occupational and physical therapy. Ready-to-use, graphic user interfaces are introduced to provide outcome measures from wearable sensors that automatically assess in near real time the effectiveness of interventions. Lastly, examples of how the new framework has been effectively utilized in the context of clinical trials are provided. Provides methods and implementation strategies using real data and simple computer programs that less technical students and researchers can utilize Contains appendices with computer code in MATLAB, along with data samples to generate graphics displayed on figures in each chapter Presents videos that illustrate the experimental setup for each situation/method described
