Although Karl Marx and Søren Kierkegaard are both major figures in nineteenth-century Western thought, they are rarely considered in the same conversation. Marx is the great radical economic theorist, the prophet of communist revolution who famously claimed religion was the "opiate of the masses." Kierkegaard is the renowned defender of Christian piety, a forerunner of existentialism, and a critic of mass politics who challenged us to become "the single individual." But by drawing out important themes bequeathed them by their shared predecessor G. W. F. Hegel, Jamie Aroosi shows how they were engaged in parallel projects of making sense of the modern, "dialectical" self, as it realizes itself through a process of social, economic, political, and religious emancipation. In The Dialectical Self, Aroosi illustrates that what is traditionally viewed as opposition is actually a complementary one-sidedness, born of the fact that Marx and Kierkegaard differently imagined the impediments to the self's appropriation of freedom. Specifically, Kierkegaard's concern with the psychological and spiritual nature of the self reflected his belief that the primary impediments to freedom reside in subjectivity, such as in our willing conformity to social norms. Conversely, Marx's concern with the sociopolitical nature of the self reflected his belief that the primary impediments to freedom reside in the objective world, such as in the exploitation of the economic system. However, according to Aroosi, each thinker represents one half of a larger picture of freedom and selfhood, because the subjective and objective impediments to freedom serve to reinforce one another. By synthesizing the writing of these two diametrically opposed figures, Aroosi demonstrates the importance of envisioning emancipation as a subjective, psychological, and spiritual process as well as an objective, sociopolitical, and economic one. The Dialectical Self attests to the importance and continued relevance of Marx and Kierkegaard for the modern imagination.

Roland Barthes Writing The Political written by Andrew Stafford and has been published by Anthem Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

With typical rhetorical flourish and beholden to paradox, Roland Barthes defines his work on ‘myth’ as an attempt to ‘define things’; and yet he is known foremost for his work on language. The aim of this book is to take ‘things’ here as social relations, objects and other human beings with which the self interacts. It does so via language. And language in Barthes’s conception is double: alienating, alienated on the one side; liberating, inspiring on the other. It is this double that we investigate in this book: A spectre is haunting Barthes studies, the spectre of dialectics; and the spectral presence of dialectics is what we will define in this book as the Barthesian ‘spirit’, in both senses of the word, that is, haunting his analyses and, at once, providing us with a double approach. ‘I have tried to define things, not words’ (Barthes 2009, 131n1).

The Ego And Its Hyperstate written by Eliot Rosenstock and has been published by John Hunt Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-26 with Philosophy categories.

'The Ego and its Hyperstate gives a psychoanalytic exploration into the role of self-interest in ideals by placing the Ego centre stage. Reflection on what drives people to pull down statues and how control is wielded by subjects-supposed-to-know couldn’t come at a better time. As we are deep into the corona crisis we find ourselves in heated exchanges about our ideals, whether it’s QAnon influenced family or the contemporary feminist debate. Analysis of the Egos influence is essential for those in activist circles if they are to enact their goals effectively. The need of which is evident within the ideologically ravaged arena of sex workers rights. This increasingly radicalised debate sees interest groups claiming to hold the true masters of knowledge ergo those with the most ‘valid’ voice. This exact process then impacts how states implement the law. A reflection on how our Ego influences real world politics and how ideals fuel social dynamics can only help in a time when our voices are the loudest but we are the most alone.' Misha Mayfair The Ego And Its Hyperstate is a unified theory of psychological and ethical egoism which posits self-interest. The dialectical dream theory sets its sights against capitalist notions of the self-interest contra the other, not simply with moralism, but with a more accurate analysis of the subject of self-interest than has been provided by capitalists and anarchist theorists alike. Through the lens of psychoanalysis and Hegelian dialectical logic, the process of self-interest as the ground of all human existence reveals itself. Eliot Rosenstock has a symptom he wants you to know about: he wants you to know how the nature of self-interest strikes through the notions of pure duty and state worship, he wants to bring in psychoanalysis and redeem dialectics in its power to reveal the universe rather than be a simple rhetorical tool, and he wants to reveal to you how the material conditions of the world, as well as psychological processes of mankind, work together to bring about all that is brought into the universe by humanity.

Inventing Christic Jesuses Rules And Warrants For Theology written by Charles A. Wilson and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-01 with Religion categories.

In the first comprehensive proposal for revisionist theology’s deployment of historical Jesus research, Inventing Christic Jesuses rejects positions that insulate theology from Jesus research. By setting out theological methods, warrants, and rules, in dialogue with an analysis of the Jesus historians of the Third Quest (c. 1980–2010), the study charts a path toward a quested christology positioned between categorical rejection and uncritical acceptance of historical results on Jesus. Volume 1, Method, analyzes the methods and values of historical research on Jesus and identifies the retrojective activity of value production when historians, in conversation with historical sources, invent images of Jesus. Volume 2, Christological Recommendations, gathers potential contributions of Jesus research for revisionist theology according to the cataphatic, apophatic, and eminent pattern of classical theology. By attending to the limits and opportunities afforded by historical research, both negative and positive, the argument retrieves for theology the complex way that historians shape same and different, association and dissociation in the production of their Jesuses. Then it analyzes how values shape Jesuses in a pervasive Narcissus project to invent a self (and a community) through imaging Jesus. Proposing that the disciplined invention of Jesuses is highly useful for theology, the book ends with recommendations for a quested christology.
