Combining bold theortical analysis and careful empirical investigation Harris provides a critical framework to understand the political and economic underpinnings of globalization. In an unique historical approach the book examines how the revolution in information technologies and the break-up of the Soviet Union intertwined to present new global opportunities to reorganize capitalism as a unified world system headed by an emerging transnational capitalist class. The book challenges the common view that nation states still define international relations, with the United States as hegemonic leader of the world system. Instead Harris offers a more complex analysis of world affairs that sees the current period as one of transition between nationally based industrial capitalism and a global system based on revolutionary methods of production and new class relationships. He argues this conflict appears in every country as national economies realigned to fit new patterns of world accumulation creating a host of political tensions within and between nations. This analysis is detailed in a distinctive interpretation of the US military/industrial complex, as well as the contemporary class struggles in Germany and the emerging powers of China, India and Brazil. The book concludes by investigating alternative trends which are currently challenging the inequalities of global capitalism, unfolding a fresh approach to the relationship between the state, market and civil society.

Dialectics is a philosophical approach that seeks to understand the world through the study of change. Dialecticians argue that change is not simply a random or chaotic process, but rather a structured and orderly one. They believe that change occurs through the interaction of opposing forces, or contradictions. These contradictions are not necessarily negative, but rather the driving force behind progress and development. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to dialectics, exploring its origins in ancient Greek philosophy, its development by Hegel and Marx, and its application to a wide range of fields. The book also considers the criticisms that have been leveled against dialectics, and assesses its relevance to the challenges of the 21st century. Whether you are a student of philosophy, economics, or history, or simply someone who wants to understand the world around you better, this book will provide you with the tools you need to understand dialectics and its implications. In this book, you will learn: * The basic principles of dialectics * The historical development of dialectical thought * The application of dialectics to a variety of fields, including economics, politics, and culture * The criticisms that have been leveled against dialectics * The relevance of dialectics to the challenges of the 21st century This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the world we live in. The Dialectics of Global Justice uses a novel application of negative dialectical interpretation to offer an immanent and ethical critique of prominent theories of global justice (i.e., cosmopolitanism), including how these theories manifest in political movements and policy agendas. Drawing on the work of Theodor Adorno and Erich Fromm especially, author Bryant William Sculos exposes the contradictory relationship between cosmopolitanism and core elements of capitalism, particularly the domineering "capitalistic mentality" (re)produced by and through capitalism, leading to the conclusion that cosmopolitanism, on its own terms, demands an alternative, postcapitalistic political basis in order to make robust progress toward global justice. While offering this critique, Sculos also implicitly challenges the increasingly common view that cosmopolitanism today is inherently imperialistic and out of touch with the global resurgence of nationalism and anti-cosmopolitan sentiment.

The issues dealt with range from the philosophical consideration of the precise nature of dialectical reasoning, to dialectics and economic theory, and to more concrete concerns such as how dialectics can help us think about globalization, freedom, inflation and subjectivity.
