Heritage And Ruptures In Indian Literature Culture And Cinema written by Cornelius Crowley and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-07 with History categories.

This book investigates the millennial history of the Indian subcontinent. Through the various methods adopted, the objects and moments examined, it questions various linguistic, literary and artistic appropriations of the past, to address the conflicting comprehensions of the present and also the figuring/imagining of a possible future. The volume engages with this general cultural condition, in relation both to the subcontinent’s current “synchronic” reality and to certain aspects of the culture’s underlying diachronic determinations. It also reveals how the multiple heritages are negotiated through the subcontinent’s long-term sedimentational history. It scrutinizes both conservative interpretations of heritage and a possibly incremental enrichment, and the additional possibility of a mode of appropriation open to a dialectic of creative destruction, in which the patrimonial imperative is challenged, leaving room for processes of renewal and rejuvenation. The collection is organized around four major topics: Orientalism, addressed by way of the Tamil Epic Manimekalai, through the evocation of the Hastings Circle and views on a possible Hindu-Muslim unity sketched out by Sayyid Ahmed Khan; modernism in Indian and Burmese texts written in English; pictorial art, through a consideration of the work of British Asian and Indian film directors; and, finally, the current state of a body of critical thinking on gender.

Bollywood And Postmodernism written by Neelam Sidhar Wright and has been published by Edinburgh University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-24 with Performing Arts categories.

'New Bollywood' has arrived, but its postmodern impulse often leaves film scholars reluctant to theorise its aesthetics. How do we define the style of a contemporary Bollywood film? Are Bollywood films just uninspired Hollywood rip-offs, or does their borrowing signal genuine innovation within the industry?Applying postmodern concepts and locating postmodern motifs in key commercial Hindi films, this innovative study reveals how Indian cinema has changed in the 21st century. Equipping readers with an alternative method of reading contemporary Indian cinema, Bollywood and Postmodernism takes Indian film studies beyond the exhausted theme of diaspora, and exposes a new decade of aesthetic experimentation and textual appropriation in mainstream Bombay cinema. A bold celebration of contemporary Bollywood texts, this book radically redefines Indian film and persuasively argues for its seriousness as a field of study in world cinema.

"To Death, I give you away!"These words, uttered by Nachiketa's father in a fit of anger, initiate the adventurous journey of twelve-year old Nachiketa to the celestial realm of Lord Yama, the god of Death. Using this storyline of the Katha Upanishad, and a creatively imagined dialogue between the student Nachiketa and his guru Yama, the author presents the essence of the Upanishadic wisdom in a lucid, easy-to-understand manner. The dialogue helps Nachiketa (and us) discover answers to his profound questions:What is the real aim of our life? What happens after death? What is Self-realisation? How does one get liberated?'Very inspiring. I find it very useful. The immediate impact of the book on me is that I have become calmer, while continuing to be active, professionally and otherwise. I intend to read this book again and again.' - V S Raju, former Director, IIT Delhi'Having attended the courses of Prof. Devdas Menon on 'Self-Awareness' and 'Integral Karmayoga' at IIT Madras, I clearly hear his voice, blended with his deep understanding, flowing through this book, thankfully free of difficult Sanskrit terms. I feel grateful to be introduced to the process of awakening!' - Christian Thaulow, Professor (retd), NTNU, Norway'It is not easy to translate the wisdom teachings of the Upanishads in simple language. The author attempts to do this and comes out with flying colours. The dialogue adopted is fascinating and keeps the reader hooked till the last page.' - Subir Chakraborty, MD & CEO, Exide Industries Ltd

The Goddess As Role Model written by Heidi R.M. Pauwels and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-09 with Religion categories.

This book seeks to understand the major mythological role models that mark the moral landscape navigated by young Hindu women. Traditionally, the goddess Sita, faithful consort of the god Rama, is regarded as the most important positive role model for women. The case of Radha, who is mostly portrayed as a clandestine lover of the god Krishna, seems to challenge some of the norms the example of Sita has set. That these role models are just as relevant today as they have been in the past is witnessed by the popularity of the televised versions of their stories, and the many allusions to them in popular culture. Taking the case of Sita as main point of reference, but comparing throughout with Radha, Pauwels studies the messages sent to Hindu women at different points in time. She compares how these role models are portrayed in the most authoritative versions of the story. She traces the ancient, Sanskrit sources, the medieval vernacular retellings of the stories and the contemporary TV versions as well. This comparative analysis identifies some surprising conclusions about the messages sent to Indian women today, which belie the expectations one might have of the portrayals in the latest, more liberal versions. The newer messages turn out to be more conservative in many subtle ways. Significantly, it does not remain limited to the religious domain. By analyzing several popular recent and classical hit movies that use Sita and Radha tropes, Pauwels shows how these moral messages spill into the domain of popular culture for commercial consumption.

For lovers of Asian cinema and for those simply curious to know its trends and moods, experiments and innovations since it strode the world stage with assurance in the mid- 80s, Asian Film Journeys is a feast. It presents a selection of articles that appeared in the pages of Cinemaya, The Asian Film Quarterly between 1988 and 2004, articles that closely tracked the bold new film narrative of both the well-known and the lesser-known cinemas as it unfolded. The Quarterly remained, for fifteen years, the one and only serious yet lively platform for writing on the cinemas of Asian countries. Given that the writers were mostly Asian-apart from some keen and long-standing followers of Asian cinema from the West-the magazine offered, for the first time, a truly authentic point of view, a look at films from within their cultures. The book gives a bird’s eye view of the style and substance, art and craft of these cinemas and captures some of the Asian air it let in!
