शरतचन्द्र के उपन्यासों में जिस रचना को सब से अधिक लोकप्रियता मिली है वह है देवदास। तालसोनापुर गाँव के देवदास और पार्वती बालपन से अभिन्न स्नेह सूत्रों में बँध जाते हैं, किन्तु देवदास की भीरू प्रवृत्ति और उसके माता-पिता के मिथ्या कुलाभिमान के कारण दोनों का विवाह नहीं हो पाता। दो तीन हजार रुपये मिलने की आशा में पार्वती के स्वार्थी पिता तेरह वर्षीय पार्वती को चालीस वर्षीय दुहाजू भुवन चौधरी के हाथ बेच देते हैं, जिसकी विवाहिता कन्या उम्र में पार्वती से बड़ी थी। विवाहोपरान्त पार्वती अपने पति और परिवार की पूर्णनिष्ठा व समर्पण के साथ देखभाल करती है। निष्फल प्रेम के कारण नैराश्य में डूबा देवदास मदिरा सेवन आरम्भ करता है,जिस कारण उसका स्वास्थ्य बहुत अधिक गिर जाता है। कोलकाता में चन्द्रमुखी वेश्या से देवदास के घनिष्ठ संबंध स्थापित होते हैं। देवदास के सम्पर्क में चन्द्रमुखी के अन्तर में सत प्रवृत्तियाँ जाग्रत होती हैं। वह सदैव के लिए वेश्यावृत्ति का परित्याग कर अशथझूरी गाँव में रहकर समाजसेवा का व्रत लेती है। बीमारी के अन्तिम दिनों में देवदास पार्वती के ससुराल हाथीपोता पहुँचता है किन्तु देर रात होने के कारण उसके घर नहीं जाता। सवेरे तक उसके प्राण पखेरू उड़ जाते हैं। उसके अपरिचित शव को चाण्डाल जला देते हैं। देवदास के दुखद अन्त के बारे में सुनकर पार्वती बेहोश हो जाती है। देवदास में वंशगत भेदभाव एवं लड़की बेचने की कुप्रथा के साथ निष्फल प्रेम के करुण कहानी कही गयी है
