The disability experience has, until very recently, been marginalized, stereotyped, and ignored in literature. Now, through the vehicles of nonfiction, poetry, fiction, and drama, Staring Back is the first anthology to open the landscape of the disabled experience for exploration and discussion. The presence of such well-known authors as Lucy Grealy, John Hockenberry, and Marilyn Hacker in this anthology gives immediate lie to the notion that disability is a limitation to insight and productivity. But just as importantly, Staring Back challenges us to look anew at the disabilities of FDR and Matisse; the lives of Helen Keller and Frida Kahlo; the work of Stephen Hawking. It urges us to redefine what is meant by ?cure,? to understand hidden disabilities, and even to find humor in ways that defy our expectations. If there is one theme that binds this diverse body of work, aside from its subject matter, it is the theme of human connection?a connection with the past, with each other, with our bodies, and with ourselves. As Kenny Fries writes in his introduction, ?Throughout history, those who live with disabilities have been silenced by those who did not want to hear what we have to say. We have also been silenced by our own fear...the fear that if we told our stories, people would say, ?See, it isn?t worth it. You would be better off dead.?? Staring Back emphatically demonstrates the power of these writers? stories to overcome that fear and to break that silence.

Abstract: The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine how a non-disabled person's age, experience, and exposure to media or entertainment helped them to establish identity for those living with a disability. Questionnaire answers were collected over a forty-five day period through an electronic 16-item questionnaire. Participants for this study were determined based on their affiliation or due to a lack of affiliation to the education profession. The questionnaire was designed to generate answers that correlated with three models of disability. Findings were established using a Framework analysis. Findings of the study indicated that personal experience with people living with a disability correlated with a greater understanding of another's individual identity. However, on a macro level larger society still has very limited and constricting language for discourse on people living with disabilities.

'The Disability Experience II' focuses mostly on the first three years after surviving the accident, a period of time I call 'The Aftermath'. This was a time of profound change in lifestyle as I worked through the stages of grief to slowly reach some degree of acceptance. Nearly every aspect of my life was impacted by physical disability. Learning to cope was a difficult and not always graceful process. Writing has helped me continue to work through these issues as well as others in my life. I write primarily poetry, so have also included a selection of poems I've written since my first book. My three goals for this book are: 1) To let others with disabilities know they are not alone. 2) To give the non-disabled a chance to see into our world. 3) To show the therapeutic value of writing in dealing with illness.

Understanding And Responding To The Experience Of Disability written by Jill Porter and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-13 with Education categories.

Understanding and Responding to the Experience of Disability informs readers about current understandings of disability and ways of recognizing the needs that arise from the lived experience of impairment in schools. While most schools have clear procedures in place with respect to identifying children with special educational needs, the same is not true for disability. Moreover, research suggests that many schools have restricted understanding of this distinction, often equating disability to children with SEN and children with health conditions, thereby failing to recognize the pivotal role of impact. In this insightful text, Jill Porter argues that disability needs to be understood within the setting in which it is experienced, thereby recognizing that it is not a fixed attributable label, but one that is cultural, contextual and fluid. By providing a theoretical basis for understandings of disability around notions of impairment, experience and impact, the book combines three key components: a conceptual understanding of disability – to provide a clear value driven framework for professional responses; an empirical illustration of the development of materials to support an understanding of why the process of disability data collection cannot simply be reduced to two questions on a form; embedded illustrative case study material to provide exemplars of how the materials can be contextualized and used to make adjustments to enhance the participation of all children.

The realities surrounding the psychological experience of disability, plus the intervention techniques used to resolve some of the problems, have changed dramatically since the publication of the first edition of this classic text. This revised edition describes changes that have come out of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as technological advances, new legislation, and evolving health care systems. It addresses the growing interest in racial and ethnic diversity, and includes an exploration of spirituality and disability, as well as a look at new partnerships, such as within the community, that have developed.

Over the last three decades, a number of reforms have taken place in European social policy with an impact on the opportunities for persons with disabilities to be full and active members of society. The policy reforms have aimed to change the balance between citizens’ rights and duties and the opportunities to enjoy choice and autonomy, live in the community and participate in political decision-making processes of importance for one’s life. How do the reforms influence the opportunities to exercise Active Citizenship? This volume presents the findings from the first cross-national comparison of how persons with disabilities reflexively make their way through the world, pursuing their own interests and values. The volume considers how their experiences, views and aspirations regarding participation vary across Europe. Based on retrospective life-course interviews, the volume examines the scope for agency on the part of persons with disabilities, i.e. the extent to which men and women with disabilities are able to make choices and pursue lives they have reasons to value. Drawing on structuration theory and the capability approach, the volume investigates the opportunities for exercising Active Citizenship among men and women in nine European countries. The volume identifies the policy implications of a process-oriented and multi-dimensional approach to Active Citizenship in European disability policy. It will appeal to policymakers and policy officials, as well as to researchers and students of disability studies, comparative social policy, international disability law and qualitative research methods.

Theology And The Experience Of Disability written by Andrew Picard and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-28 with Religion categories.

The Christian gospel compels humanity to embrace deeper ways of being human together that will overcome false divisions and exclusions in search of flourishing and graced communities. Presenting both short narratives emerging out of theological reflection on experience and analytical essays arising from engagement in scholarly conversations Theology and the Experience of Disability is a conscious attempt to develop theology by and with people with disabilities instead of theology about people with disabilities. A mixture of academic, professional, practical, and/or lived experience is brought to the topic in search of constructive multi-disciplinary proposals for church and society. The result is an interdisciplinary engagement with the constructive possibilities that emerge from a distinctly Christian understanding of disability as lived experience.
