In an earlier volume, I recited the history of the Disciples of Christ under the title, Religion Follows the Frontier. The phrase was designed to emphasize the fact that this religious movement was born under pioneer conditions on the American frontier, in the days when the frontier was just crossing the Alleghenies, that much of its formative thinking followed patterns congenial to the frontier mind, and that its early expansion kept pace with the westward wave of migration. Since that book is now out of print, while interest in the theme is increasing, it has seemed desirable to rewrite the history. If this were merely a sequel to the other, I would call it Growing Up with the Country. It remains true that the pioneer beginnings must be remembered and understood if the initial motives and methods of the Disciples and the processes of their growth are to be understood. But important as the frontier is, as a fact in the history of the United States and of every phase of culture in the Middle West, an equally significant fact is that, as the frontier rolled westward, it left behind it a widening area in which pioneer conditions no longer prevailed. As the country was growing by the expansive drive of which the frontier was the cutting edge, it was also growing up, both behind and on the frontier. The process of maturing is as significant as that of expanding. Since the present purpose is to survey the history of the Disciples through both of these phases, I have resisted the allurement of this second title and am giving the book a name which includes both; for the movement is distinctively American, and every American movement which began in pioneer days and has lived through the cycles of American life until now has both followed the frontier and grown up with the country. As to the future—I am only a historian, not a prophet. But I shall be disappointed if this record of the past does not leave with the reader an acquaintance with the essential data upon which, using his own judgment and imagination, he will be disposed to project the curve of a future development far beyond any present attainments in promoting the ends for which the Disciples of Christ came into existence—the unity and purity of the Church, a reasonable and practical religion, and the enrichment of life through fellowship in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Twelve Disciples - The Life and Ministry of Jesus' 12 Disciples Who were the 12 men who were the closest to Jesus? The Twelve Disciples takes you inside "the circle" to learn more about Jesus' devoted followers, their backgrounds, their strengths and weaknesses, their purpose, and their mission. The Twelve Disciples takes a look at the disciples' personalities, their encounters with Jesus, and the lessons we can learn from those who knew Jesus best while he was on earth. This bestselling resource is an excellent tool to help you learn about those who were the closest to Jesus and what it takes to be a disciple of Jesus today. 12 panels, fits inside most Bibles, 8.5 x 5.5 inches, unfolds to 33 inches long What do you know about the disciples who learned at Jesus' feet? The Twelve Disciples contains a close-up on the 12 ordinary men who Jesus trained to care for his church: Peter, James (son of Zebedee), Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), John, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot. What was the purpose and mission of the 12 disciples? Below are a few of the facts you will learn in this fascinating pamphlet: Each of the disciples were from the Galilee region except for Judas. The disciples were Jesus' main focus of instruction. Jesus was very aware of each one's strengths and weaknesses. Jesus trusted them to carry God's message of redemption to the ends of the earth. The Twelve Disciples reveals the personality and character of the disciples. For example, Peter was impulsive and courageous whereas John was bold yet vengeful. Each disciple had unique and personal encounters with Jesus that helps us learn more about how we can improve our relationship with Jesus today Peter was called to be a fisher of men (Matthew 4:19). James was with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46). Andrew told Jesus about the boy with five loaves of bread and two fish (John 20:19-25). Thomas affirmed that Jesus was Lord and God (John 21:2-7). What do you know about the 39 followers of Jesus, outside of the disciples, who are mentioned by name in the New Testament? Yes, there are 39 other key people who were significant to Jesus and the church, including: Cleopas, Joanna, Judas (brother of Jesus), Mary Magdalene, Luke, Apollos, and dozens of others. The Twelve Disciples provides information about these important people and Scripture references so you can learn more about the friends of Jesus and those who were instrumental in starting His Church. Glossy and full-color, every fact in The Twelve Disciples includes a Scripture reference. Each of these 12 men will give you new insights into how you life can change by walking with Jesus. This pamphlet is an ideal resource for a Sunday school class or a small group Bible study. Both my husband and I found [The Twelve Disciples] surprisingly rich in information and historical facts concerning the characters, lives and deaths of Jesus' 12 disciples. My husband found it useful too for his sermons and we were surprised by some facts that we didn't know about the so-much-studied disciples. Myrtia (Customer review from CBD.com)

Jesus The Apostles And The Early Church written by Pope Benedict XVI and has been published by Ignatius Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-25 with Religion categories.

Based on Pope Benedict XVI's weekly teaching on the relationship between Christ and the Church, this book tells the drama of Jesus' first disciples - his Apostles and their associates - and how they spread Jesus' message throughout the ancient world. Far from distorting the truth about Jesus of Nazareth, insists Pope Benedict, the early disciples remained faithful to it, even at the cost of their lives. Beginning with the Twelve as the foundation of Jesus' re-establishment of the Holy People of God, Pope Benedict examines the story of the early followers of Christ. He draws on Scripture and early tradition to consider such important figures as Peter, Andrew, James and John, and even Judas Iscariot. Benedict moves beyond the original Twelve to discuss Paul of Tarsus, the persecutor of Christianity who became one of Jesus' greatest disciples. Also considered are Stephen, the first Christian martyr, Barnabas, Timothy, Titus, the wife and husband "team" of Priscilla and Aquila, and such key women figures as Mary, the Mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and Phoebe. Jesus, the Apostles and the Early Church is a fascinating journey back to the origins of Christianity. It reveals how Jesus' earliest disciples faithfully conveyed the truth about the "Jesus of history" and how they laid the foundations for the Church, through whom people today can know the same Jesus.

The years between the Civil War and 1930 constitute the most critical period in the history of Disciples of Christ, yet little attempt has been made to understand that era's most prominent leaders, one of whom was J. H. Garrison. For more than sixty years, he edited and contributed to The Christian-Evangelist, the journal that became the weekly periodical of the Disciples. An editor with vast influence, he played a significant and sometimes decisive role in the life of his communion. This book is more than the story of one man; it is a critical study of the turbulent and transitional era in Disciple history spanned by his editorial career. The value of this book is enhanced by the extensive use that is made of J. H. Garrison's letters and diaries. This rich collection of source material has only recently been made available for historical research.
