We organize things. We organize information, information about things, and information about information. Organizing is a fundamental issue in many professional fields, but these fields have only limited agreement in how they approach problems of organizing and in what they seek as their solutions. The Discipline of Organizing synthesizes insights from library science, information science, computer science, cognitive science, systems analysis, business, and other disciplines to create an Organizing System for understanding organizing. This framework is robust and forward-looking, enabling effective sharing of insights and design patterns between disciplines that weren't possible before. The 4th edition of this award-winning and widely adopted text adds content to bridge between the foundations of organizing systems and the new statistical and computational techniques of data science because at its core, data science is about how resources are described and organized. The 4th edition reframes descriptive statistics as organizing techniques, expands the treatment of classification to include computational methods, and incorporates many new examples of data-driven resource selection, organization, maintenance, and personalization. The Professional edition remains the definitive source for advanced students and practitioners who require comprehensive and pinpoint connections to the classic and contemporary literature about organizing. Dozens of new citations and endnotes for the new data science material bring to 12 the number of distinct disciplinary perspectives identified in the book.

A framework for the theory and practice of organizing that integrates the concepts and methods of information organization and information retrieval. Organizing is such a common activity that we often do it without thinking much about it. In our daily lives we organize physical things—books on shelves, cutlery in kitchen drawers—and digital things—Web pages, MP3 files, scientific datasets. Millions of people create and browse Web sites, blog, tag, tweet, and upload and download content of all media types without thinking “I'm organizing now” or “I'm retrieving now.” This book offers a framework for the theory and practice of organizing that integrates information organization (IO) and information retrieval (IR), bridging the disciplinary chasms between Library and Information Science and Computer Science, each of which views and teaches IO and IR as separate topics and in substantially different ways. It introduces the unifying concept of an Organizing System—an intentionally arranged collection of resources and the interactions they support—and then explains the key concepts and challenges in the design and deployment of Organizing Systems in many domains, including libraries, museums, business information systems, personal information management, and social computing. Intended for classroom use or as a professional reference, the book covers the activities common to all organizing systems: identifying resources to be organized; organizing resources by describing and classifying them; designing resource-based interactions; and maintaining resources and organization over time. The book is extensively annotated with disciplinary-specific notes to ground it with relevant concepts and references of library science, computing, cognitive science, law, and business.

The Core Concepts edition is an abridged version that is simpler to read because it does not tempt the reader with the deep scholarly web of endnotes contained in the Professional edition. Instead, it seeks to reinforce the concepts and design patterns with numerous "Stop and Think" exercises, and omits some of the theoretical nuance of the Professional edition to put more emphasis on concrete examples.

Organized For Success written by Stephanie Winston and has been published by Crown Currency this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-08-17 with Business & Economics categories.

In this groundbreaking guide, Stephanie Winston explains how she discovered, after more than two decades as a leading organization expert and bestselling author, that senior executives and CEOs seem to possess unique conceptual skills in the areas of time management and organization that enable them to dramatically increase their productivity. Intrigued by this revelation, Winston set out to interview dozens of senior executives in an attempt to better understand the work habits and mental discipline of the supersuccessful, and to quantify their skills and translate them into techniques that will enable managers and ambitious workers at all levels of an organization to develop their own productivity and time management style. The result is a concise, practical, inspiring, and information-filled book that will help any reader get organized for success. Among the strategies that Winston uncovered are two that may surprise—and give heart to—many readers. First: top executives deal very differently with the day-to-day interruptions that cause most of us to lose focus and get sidelined. They view them not as a menacing obstruction to workflow but instead as a means to connect with fellow workers and enable more work to be done. Second: supersuccessful businesspeople do not multitask; they focus their complete attention on each task at hand until it is done, and then move on to the next thing. And they employ powerful delegation strategies to enhance their own productivity and that of their team. Among the many other lessons Winston brings to the reader are insights on how to: • conquer e-mail and paperwork gridlock • run and participate in meetings more effectively • develop your own best productivity and time management style • create techniques to find valuable private time in the middle of a hectic day • use follow-up strategies that ensure you respond to others consistently and complete all necessary tasks Throughout Organized for Success, Winston shares practical tips and tested techniques geared to helping workers and managers at every level to adopt the strategies that highly successful executives have employed on their way up the corporate ladder. Even more, she helps us all—not just those who aspire to the senior executive ranks—to adopt an organized and disciplined mind-set in every aspect of our professional lives.

Historical Organization Studies written by Mairi Maclean and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-26 with Business & Economics categories.

We are now entering a new phase in the establishment of historical organization studies as a distinctive methodological paradigm within the broad field of organization studies. This book serves both as a landmark in the development of the field and as a key reference tool for researchers and students. For two decades, organization theorists have emphasized the need for more and better research recognizing the importance of the past in shaping the present and future. By historicizing organizational research, the contexts and forces bearing upon organizations will be more fully recognized, and analyses of organizational dynamics improved. But how, precisely, might a traditionally empirically oriented discipline such as history be incorporated into a theoretically oriented discipline such as organization studies? This book evaluates the current state of play, advances it and identifies the possibilities the new emergent field offers for the future. In addition to providing an important work of reference on the subject for researchers, the book can be used to introduce management and organizational history to a student audience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The book is a valuable source for wider reading, providing rich reference material in tutorials across organizational studies, or as recommended or required reading on courses with a connection to business or management history.
