Excerpt from The Discovery of the Science of Languages, Vol. 1 of 2: In Which Are Shown the Real Nature of the Parts of Speech; The Meanings Which All Words Carry in Themselves, as Their Own Definitions; And the Origin of Words, Letters, Figures, Etc This Work has, Whilst going through the press, grown double in size; Which circumstance, as so sudden and considerable an increase in its contents was not in the beginning anticipated, Will account for its being several times referred to by its author, as a single volume. Hence, too, the reader, as he must be aware with What precipitation all productions of the mind, brought out in this way, are attended, cannot expect from this Work more than what is claimed for it - namely, that it contains, though put together hurriedly and Without art, the clear and full communication of a discovery. Lectures on The Science of Language Volume 2 By Max Müller Though alchemy did not lead to the discovery of gold, it prepared the way to discoveries more valuable. The same with astrology. Astrology was not such mere imposition as it is generally supposed to have been. It is counted as a science by so sound and sober a scholar as Melancthon, and even Bacon allows it a place among the sciences, though admitting that "it had better intelligence and confederacy with the imagination of man than with his reason."

First published in 1900, this is the second of two volumes of the magnum opus from pioneer assyriologist and linguist Rev. Archibald Sayce and continues directly from the first, providing an introduction to linguistic roots, inflectional families of speech, agglutinative, incorporating, polysynthetic and isolating languages, comparative mythology, the science of religion, the origin of language and the relation of language to ethnology, logic and education. In it, Sayce was the first to emphasize the principle of partial assimilation and the linguistic principle of analogy. This 4th edition, ten years after the first, reflected on the limitations of science revealed since 1890, in an era when languages, like other humanities subjects, still idealised scientific approaches. Archibald Henry Sayce was one of the greatest comparative linguists of the time, being proficient in Accadian, Arabic, Cuneiform, Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Hebrew, Hittite, Japanese, Latin, Persian, Phoenician, Sanscrit and Sumerian. He had a good knowledge of every Semitic and Indo-European language and could write good prose in at least twenty languages. Sayce's first major contribution to scholarship was a highly significant translation of an Accadian seal, a 'bilingual text' from which to translate cuneiform, similar to the Rosetta Stone. Here then, no doubt, the reader learns from a master of comparative linguistics.

Excerpt from Introduction to the Science of Language, Vol. 2 of 2 In the Welsh book of Taliessin, a manuscript of the fourteenth century, the bard declares that "there are seven score Ogyren in song," and Prof. Rhys points out that these are the same as the "seven score and seven Ogyrven," or roots, which, according to another Welsh writer, who lived a century or two later, "are no other than the symbols of the seven score and seven parent-words, whence every other word." But the doctrine that all our words are descended from a limited number of primæval germs or roots is far older than the Welsh bards. More than two thousand years ago the grammarians of India had discovered that the manifold words of their language could all be traced back to certain common phonetic forms which they termed "elements."
