Through the analysis of congressional debates and hearings, presidential speeches, public opinion polls, and eighty-three interviews with administrators and teachers, Children, Not Widgets shows how policymakers willfully unraveled many public services, like education. The framing of government as the problem, rather than the solution, and citizens as consumers, rather than community members, justified allotting public resources to an unregulated private sector. Over time, the claim that markets would better achieve important social democratic ends-such as increased civic engagement and socio-economic integration-as economic growth trickled down in ways that would "lift all boats" created what some have referred to as a consumerocracy, where public services are evaluated based on how well they serve individual wants versus collective ends. The book elaborates on why the construction of education as a good that is produced by teachers and consumed by individuals-versus a good that is produced collectively for the benefit of society-jeopardizes the broader benefits provided through a strong system of public education, and how the resulting market-based reforms resulted in unequal, unproductive, and undemocratic outcomes. By juxtaposing policymakers' views with those of educators, the book maps a broad-based policy agenda that addresses the social, economic, and political contexts of schools-not just the behaviors of individual educators, parents, and students-to promote equity, foster the broader social democratic and transformative ends of public schools, and provide choice while still improving public education for all children.

"All across America, our largest city school districts have been rapidly and dramatically changing. From Chicago to Detroit in the Midwest to Newark and New York in the East, charter schools continue to crop up everywhere while traditional public schools are shuttered. In what remains of public schools, school boards are increasingly bypassed or suspended by state-appointed managers who are often non-local actors and public services are increasingly privatized. The varied chapters of this book seek to capture the complexities of teaching and learning in today's schools, and they share an interest in exploring the influences of knowledge construction in the moment and over time. Teaching and learning are human processes, interrelated and dynamic. We assembled this collection to unpack what it means to teach and to learn, teasing out some of the implications and challenges of such complicated educational processes that are often misconstrued as causal or linear. As educators currently residing in the United States, we find this a particularly pressing agenda, given the current focus on common core standards and reducing teaching and learning to conceptual and pedagogical step-by-step procedures. Our primary concern in putting together this book was to provide a conceptual and political foundation from which to construct and defend understandings and practices of teaching and learning that embody the complexity of educational endeavors and relationships. The isolation of teaching from learning, and the othering of both teachers and students, one from the other, suggests that knowledge is synonymous with information. This book challenges such assumptions. The project underlying this text can be seen as a means of rethinking how teachers' and students’ perspectives of practice and curriculum influence what learning opportunities are provided to students. Chapters written by established and new thinkers in the field of education demonstrate the ways in which teachers reformulate relationships between teaching and learning in school settings. Our second objective is to examine local constructions of knowledge over time and how those constructions are consequential for teacher and student learning. By examining patterns of practice and processes of knowledge construction in elementary, secondary, and undergraduate classrooms, the authors of these chapters lay a foundation for examining commonalities and differences in the construction of knowledge and practices across educational levels, disciplines, and in-school and outof-school settings.
