The understanding of God's name YHWH is so controversial that it is eventually the controversy of controversies, or the ultimate controversy. Indeed, why most of competent Hebrew scholars propagate patently false explanations about God's name? Why do the Jews refuse to read God's name as it is written and read Adonay "my Lord" (a plural of majesty) instead of it? Why God's name is usually punctuated e, â (shewa, qamats) by the Masoretes what makes its reading impossible, because the 4 consonants of the name YHWH must have at least 3 vowels (long or short) to be read, like the words 'aDoNâY and 'eLoHîM "God" (a plural of majesty), which have 4 consonants and 3 vowels? At last, why the obvious reading "Yehowah", according to theophoric names, which all begin by Yehô-, without exception, is so despised, and why the simple biblical meaning, "He will be" from Exodus 3:14, is rejected.

One of the most precarious and daunting tasks for sixteenth-century European missionaries in the cross-cultural mission frontiers was translating the name of «God» (Deus) into the local language. When the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) introduced the Chinese term Shangti as the semantic equivalent of Deus, he made one of the most innovative cross-cultural missionary translations. Ricci's employment of Shangti was neither a simple rewording of a Chinese term nor the use of a loan-word, but was indeed a risk-taking «identification» of the Christian God with the Confucian Most-High, Shangti. Strange Names of God investigates the historical progress of the semantic configuration of Shangti as the divine name of the Christian God in China by focusing on Chinese intellectuals' reaction to the strangely translated Chinese name of God.

One of the distinctive features of the Fourth Gospel is the emphasis it places on the "name" of God. As the earliest Christian texts already exhibit a shift toward Jesus's name as the cultic or divine name, what might have motivated the Evangelist to this recovery of the divine name category? Joshua J. F. Coutts argues that the divine name acquired particular significance through the Evangelist's reading of Isaiah, which, in combination with the polemical experience and pastoral needs of early Christians, formed the impetus for his interest in and emphasis on the divine name.

"In The Divine Names the unknown Dionysius the Areopagite expresses many profound truths concerning the Divine Nature, based upon discussions of the names which are ascribed in the Bible to Him and to His attributes. In doing so, Dionysius had the advantage of the mystical teachings of the Neoplatonic School, which developed the Platonic teachings. Since he treated these from a Christian point of view, Dionysius played a great part in developing Christian mysticism. At the same time he is a link with the older thought, and therefore illustrates how the one fundamental truth is contimued [sic] through many schools of thought."--

Why and how did we lose God's personal name? Is it important? What does God think about us always calling him by a title or substitute like LORD? Can we accurately recover the exact pronunciation of the tetragrammaton in the way it sounded in the days of Moses? What are we to make of the Sacred Name Movement? Why did the New Testament authors use kurios (Lord) to refer to God? How seriously should we take Exodus 3:15 in this whole discussion? And how has God's personal name as revealed to Moses been rendered and perceived throughout history? Should we never pronounce God's name out of reverence, or is there biblical evidence to the contrary? Andrew Case provides an exhaustive discussion of these issues and more, considering implications for Bible translation and beyond. Overall, he sets out to answer two primary questions throughout the book: 1) Would it be better for translations of the Hebrew Bible to use some approximation of Yahweh, or a title like "the Lord"? 2) When teaching and reading Hebrew today outside of Israel, would it be better to pronounce his name as some approximation like Yahweh, or say Adonai (Lord)?
