What happens when a boy is raised like a dog...and then thrust into the modern world? The Dogcatcher's Kid tells the story of Peter, a stoic dogcatcher who adopts the discarded dogs he should be euthanizing. When he takes possession of an abandoned baby, Peter is forced to confront the society he abandoned long ago. As Plato said: Of all animals, boy is the most unmanageable. In two simple narrative threads, The Dogcatcher's Kid traces civilization from its roots in rural Greece, through small-town manufacturing, and onto skyscraper rooftops, paying homage along the way to each generation's turning points. The timeless words of Socrates and Plato guide the journey, echoing clearly with their current relevance. Where did the modern world come from? Why did it get so big? And how can a mix of Greek and canine philosophies help a young boy to navigate it? The Dogcatcher's Kid is a fable both ancient and modern. For lovers of animals or lovers of gadgets. And for anybody who has been a parent, an adult, or a kid.

At middle age Manuel met and married the love of his life, but only after he had taken complete control of it. As an adolescent he was raised in a very large, very poor and typically dysfunctional family with seven sisters and three brothers. His father was a typical alcoholic and his mother was overworked and overburdened with family responsibilities allowing him to practically make his own rules of behavior. Despite many bad influences in his childhood he managed to stay on the right side of the law and even attain a couple of college degrees. It seemed as if he was off and running with both hands on the wheel to what seemed a promising future, only to begin experiencing symptoms he could not understand. At first he began just having feelings guilt, insecurity and loneliness. Then his life began to derail when he started having feelings of extreme paranoia, then severe delusions crept into his state of mind. Unwilling to admit he was having serious mental problems he continued on his way not knowing he had only one hand on the wheel and one eye on the road. Only after several severe schizophrenic episodes and suicide attempts did he learn he was still sane enough to realize he was almost insane. He took complete control of his life when he finally admitted that he was a chronic paranoid schizophrenic. Under proper medication and treatment he learned, before it was too late, that he could not beat the madness that comes with schizophrenia. His only hope was to deal with it. Today, he is happily married with two wonderful children and a beautiful wife thanks in part to the medication he takes diligently every day. This is his story about survival.

This wide-ranging guide introduces (or reintroduces) readers to movie musicals past and present, enabling them to experience the development of this uniquely American art form—and discover films they'll love. This comprehensive guide covers movie musicals from their introduction with the 1927 film The Jazz Singer through 2015 releases. In all, it describes 125 movies, opening up the world of this popular form of entertainment to preteens, teens, and adults alike. An introduction explains the advent of movie musicals; then, in keeping with the book's historical approach, films are presented by decade and year with overviews of advances during particular periods. In this way, the reader not only learns about individual films but can see the big picture of how movie musicals developed and changed over time. For each film covered, the guide offers basic facts—studio, director, songwriters, actors, etc.—as well as a brief plot synopsis. Each entry also offers an explanation of why the movie is noteworthy, how popular it was or wasn't, and the influence the film might have had on later musicals. Sidebars offering brief biographies of important artists appear throughout the book.

Drawing Power written by Rick Marschall and has been published by Fantagraphics Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-31 with Comics & Graphic Novels categories.

Drawing Power is a lively collection of mass market print advertising from the 1890s to the recent past, starring both cartoonists and cartoon characters. While critics debate whether comics is high art or low art, the fact is that the comic strip was born as a commercial medium and was nurtured by competition, commerce, and advertising. Drawing Power will be the first book-length examination (and celebration) of the nexus of art and cartoons. It will focus on the commercial roots of newspaper strips; the cross-promotions of artists, their characters, and retail products; and of the superb artwork that cartoonists invested in their lucrative freelance work in advertising. Drawing Power is cultural history, chronicling a time in popular culture when cartoonists were celebrities and their strips and characters competed with the movies for the attention of a mass audience.

Fictionalized memoir which explores the dynamics of being raised in a declining Southwest Philadelphia neighborhood. Pint-sized and four-eyed, little Jimmy Morris is near the bottom of the food chain in his working class "streetcar suburb" of Kings Cross. He's a dreamer, schemer, schoolyard scrapper, secret lover of books, and classroom clown ... a kid you can't decide whether to hug or to slap. Meanwhile, the conformity of the 1950s is yielding to those turbulent '60s. Yes, the times they definitely were a changin' with Kings Cross in the eye of the societal storm.

Just A Dog written by Arnold Arluke and has been published by Temple University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-06-16 with Nature categories.

Psychiatrists define cruelty to animals as a psychological problem or personality disorder. Legally, animal cruelty is described by a list of behaviors. In Just a Dog, Arnold Arluke argues that our current constructs of animal cruelty are decontextualized—imposed without regard to the experience of the groups committing the act. Yet those who engage in animal cruelty have their own understandings of their actions and of themselves as actors. In this fascinating book, Arluke probes those understandings and reveals the surprising complexities of our relationships with animals. Just a Dog draws from interviews with more than 250 people, including humane agents who enforce cruelty laws, college students who tell stories of childhood abuse of animals, hoarders who chronically neglect the welfare of many animals, shelter workers who cope with the ethics of euthanizing animals, and public relations experts who use incidents of animal cruelty for fundraising purposes. Through these case studies, Arluke shows how the meaning of "cruelty" reflects and helps to create identities and ideologies.
