The Dominicans are to be found in every part of the world and engaged in every sort of activity, from fighting for justice and peace to painting and poetry. They live on many frontiers, of the Church and of the World, of the rich and of the poor, of the West and East, and these are places of growth and discovery. This book will communicate some of the inspiration and excitement to be found there by women and men who are both utterly committed to their faith but also to what is to be learned as well.

Despite its significance in the history of Spanish colonialism, the Dominican Republic is familiar to most outsiders through only a few elements of its past and culture. Non-Dominicans may be aware that the country shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti and that it is where Christopher Columbus chose to build a colony. Some may know that the country produces talented baseball players and musicians; others that it is a prime destination for beach vacations. Little else about the Dominican Republic is common knowledge outside its borders. This Reader seeks to change that. It provides an introduction to the history, politics, and culture of the country, from precolonial times into the early twenty-first century. Among the volume's 118 selections are essays, speeches, journalism, songs, poems, legal documents, testimonials, and short stories, as well as several interviews conducted especially for this Reader. Many of the selections have been translated into English for the first time. All of them are preceded by brief introductions written by the editors. The volume's eighty-five illustrations, ten of which appear in color, include maps, paintings, and photos of architecture, statues, famous figures, and Dominicans going about their everyday lives.

St. Dominic, who died in 1221, took to heart Jesus' charge to make disciples of all nations. He founded a religious community, the Order of Preachers, which differed from most orders of his day. Dominic trained preachers who traveled anywhere and everywhere to spread the Gospel. The Dominicans continue to flourish today. The Dominican Tradition, the first in a spirituality anthology series, provides readers a window into Dominican spirituality. You will learn the core values that shape their way of life. Mostly, you will come to realize that the spiritual legacy established by Dominic is as vibrant today as it was centuries ago. Phyllis Zagano, PhD, is senior research associate-in-residence at Hofstra University, where she teaches in the Department of Religion. She is also the author of Woman to Woman published by Liturgical Press. Thomas McGonigle, OP, teaches in the history department at Providence College in Rhode Island. The essays in this volume examine various aspects of Dominican life. There are essays on prayer, spirituality, historical and biblical pieces as well as a piece on the work on the work of publishing by Dominicans. The contributors come from different parts of the world and reflect different vocations within the Order. The overarching theme in the volume is that the Dominican tradition is one of dynamic engagement, a dynamic engagement with the world, with issues, ideas, concepts, topics, biblical studies, theology, philosophy, social analysis and history in whatever activity is undertaken. It is a process, never static but always searching and calling for new ideas, new expressions, new ways to look at, to respond to the situation/s in front of us, and also importantly to make some response to the needs of the time as they confront us. It is the following of an intuition, a thought an insight, to see where it leads, to look at the context/s, all the twists of possible interpretations, understandings and to come to certain decisions in how to frame this and talk about it. At the same time it is then not just a study of a certain topic (theological or otherwise), issue, idea, event, institution not just an investigation for its own sake, but to take another next step. It is a handing on, a transmitting, a passing on to others what has been learnt, discovered, engaged with, grappled with, teased out, developed, and what is added to a body of knowledge, a tradition. It is what has been described by some as the Salamanca Process. It is prophetic not as in 'foretelling the future', but a standing back, looking at situations, topics, themes, events, institutions, people, actions, ideas and situations and to try to detail, outline, define, and attempt to interpret what is being witnessed, described and experienced. It is dynamic in so far it adds to a body of knowledge, ideas, interpretations and is always open to new analyses and to reinterpretation. Once again this dynamic process is not unique to just the Dominican tradition, as others could claim it, or do the same thing without naming it. Nor has it always been undertaken perfectly, or to its best, by all those who are part of the tradition (indeed there are times in history where it has been undertaken better than in others), but it is perhaps that 'something', that those who follow the tradition can stand back, recognise it, recognise that 'something', the elements and say 'yes, that is the Dominican 'way'.

Interdependent Yet Intolerant written by Robert Mandel and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-27 with Political Science categories.
People everywhere are more dependent than ever on foreign migrants, products, and ideas—and more xenophobic. Intolerance and hate-based violence is on the rise in countries from Hungary to South Africa, threatening global security. With Interdependent Yet Intolerant, Robert Mandel explains why we live in an unexpectedly and increasingly hateful world, why existing policies have done little to help, and what needs to be done. Through an in-depth analysis of case studies from twelve diverse countries that have experienced violence between native citizens and foreign migrants, Mandel finds that the interdependence of the current liberal international order does not breed mutual understanding between groups through increased contact, but rather, under specific conditions, stimulates boomerang effects in the exact opposite direction. And the very policy measures intended to decrease violence—from heightened border enforcement intended to minimize instability, to intergovernmental payoffs to other countries to keep foreigners away, as in the EU—only inflame intolerance and promote global insecurity. Providing practical policy recommendations for managing identity-based violence in an age of mass migration and globalization, Interdependent Yet Intolerant calls on societies around the world to rethink their predominant notions of national identity and control.
