Why didn't we love? Why did we try to hide what was deep inside?" Bobby Vail thought as he pondered his failed relationship with the love of his life. If you have ever truly loved someone who did not return his/her love to you, then you can understand the gut-wrenching pain and mental anguish it can cause, as well as the insatiable need to find answers to such tormenting questions. This book takes you on a roller coaster of love that journeys through college life, the professional work place, the ten-year high school reunion, marriage, divorce, death, church, skiing vacations, and romantic cruises. You will experience joy and pain and a myriad of other emotions dealt by true-life experiences. As a 1972 high school All-American scholar athlete, Bobby Vail did not pursue his athletic or musical dreams, but attended a small private university in Los Angeles to be near his cousin, Ronnie Cole, one of the leading black actors in Hollywood. There he meets the beautiful Monica Devoreaux, from New Orleans, Louisiana, and falls head over heels in love with her. She does not immediately return his love, charting the course for a chase that spanned two decades, in which bad timing, personal circumstances, and other obstacles keeps them apart. Monica's desire for independence and the good life gets her caught up with a rich man 16 years her senior, and she gets trapped in the relationship. The genuine friendship that Bobby and Monica developed is the element that keeps them involved in each other's life. They explore issues of politics, race, and religion, which generate some strong differences of opinion. Bobby's job as a project engineer for a national defense company sets the stage for intrigue. He gets thrown in the middle of a cover up and has to decide whether or not to stand alone against the white corporate establishment. Bobby, a true romantic who loves love, unmasks certain male stereotypes and brings a fresh, honest depiction of the male psyche with regard to male-female relationships. He displays his emotions, his hardness, his vulnerabilities, his passions, his pains, and his shortcomings, all in an attempt to remain down to earth in keeping with his father's teachings. Bobby reaches the pinnacle of success, which is attributed to a strong two-parent family, a powerful father figure, and a moral upbringing. Bobby Vail learned that life is precious and you have to take it seriously. He reflects on whether the course of his life was dictated by random events and circumstances, fate, or simply good and bad choices.

Animating Black And Brown Liberation written by Michael Datcher and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Offers a new framework for reading American literatures that critically links African American and Latinx traditions and struggles for liberation. Animating Black and Brown Liberation introduces a vital new tool for reading American literatures. Rooted in both ancient Egyptian ideas about life and cutting-edge theories of animacy, or levels of aliveness, this tool—ankhing—enables Michael Datcher to examine the ways African American and Latinx literatures respond to and ultimately work to resist hegemonic forces of neoliberalism and state-sponsored oppression. Weaving together close readings and politically informed philosophical reflection, Datcher considers the work of writer-activists Toni Cade Bambara, Cherríe Moraga, Gloria Anzaldúa, June Jordan, Salvador Plascencia, and Ishmael Reed, in light of theoretical interventions by Jane Bennett, Mel Y. Chen, Bruno Latour, Michel Foucault, Paulo Freire, and Erica R. Edwards. How, he asks, can cultural production positively influence Black and Brown material conditions and mobilize collective action “off the page”? How can art-based counterpublics provide a foundation for Black and Brown community organizing? What emerges from Datcher’s innovative analysis is a frank assessment of the links between embodied experiences of racialization, as well as a distinctive vision of twentieth- and twenty-first-century American literature as a repository of emancipatory strategies with real-world applications. “In Animating Black and Brown Liberation, Michael Datcher posits a bold new way of approaching a variety of important texts, including those authored by Toni Cade Bambara, Ishmael Reed, Salvador Plascencia, Gloria Anzaldúa, and June Jordan, among others. Drawing on ideas by theorists such as Foucault, Arendt, Giorgio Agamben, and Alexander Weheliye, Datcher offers a fresh and original way of valuing these works. This volume is a thought-provoking addition to the world of literary criticism.” — Henry Louis Gates Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor, Harvard University “This book offers a much-needed perspective on what is generally regarded in the field of American literary studies as ‘Black and Brown’ comparative ethnic literature. Few projects have endeavored to bridge African American and Latinx literatures, and Animating Black and Brown Liberation does so with a clarity and brilliance not seen in a long time.” — Ellie D. Hernández, author of Postnationalism in Chicana/o Literature and Culture

During his 27-year tenure with the San Diego Chargers, equipment manager Sid Brooks kept over 5,000 football players from appearing naked before their cheering fans. The first African-American to hold the job of equipment manager in the NFL, Brooks' job was to see that each player left the locker room in uniform. But the means to that end was far more complicated -- and outrageous -- than one would believe.Sid Brooks' Tales from the Chargers Locker Room takes the reader aboard the elevator to B2, the basement of Qualcomm Stadium, where the Chargers locker room is housed. In that basement, the equipment department and trainers, affectionately known as "dungeon rats," ran the Chargers locker room. There, Sid Brooks became caretaker for all who crossed its threshold. The locker room would be damp, dark, and quiet before the coffee and doughnuts arrived, before the arrogant swagger of the players and boom boxes, high-fives, and back-slapping brought the joint to life. Here Sid recreates that environment with tales from within the locker room, the team hotel, and the field of play, featuring stories about Chargers greats like Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Kellen Winslow, Louie Kelcher, John Jefferson, Rodney Harrison, and Junior Seau. Sid recounts stories unique to a life spent working behind the scenes in the Chargers locker room. With an eye for detail, he recounts tales of spies sent out to capture the opposing team's playbooks; the night the lights went out on Don Schula; wild cab rides with Fouts, Joiner, and Winslow; the zany pre-game rituals and idiosyncrasies of Russ Washington, Wilbur Young, Pat Curran, Woodrow Lowe, and others; rivalries born not on the playing field, but at thedominoes table; and plenty of pranks and good-natured ribbing.Rarely does a book offer more than a passing glance at what makes a football team a family. But Chargers fans can rejoice, because Sid Brooks not only introduces the family, h
