"Once upon a very, very long time ago, when toads could talk and the sun could sing, there lived a certain Duke whose tiny Dukedom was known as Dingle. Now, being a Duke is no small job, and the Duke of Dingle, being quite certain that he was twice as busy, twice as famous, twice as rich and twice as Dukely as any other Duke, proudly considered himself not just an ordinary Duke but a very special Double-Duke! He was a kindly little man who smiled a good deal. He loved cherry tarts, and had a very round tummy to show for it. He lived in his palace with his wife, the Double-Duchess, and their two children-Anathema and Shine. Shine was a very good little boy about your age who was studying to become a wizard, and Anathema was a grown-up girl of nineteen. She was a problem." Come away with the Double-Duke, the Double-Duchess, their beautiful daughter, Anathema (here meaning "a person or thing bent on destruction"-and she really does live up to her name), their wizarding son, Shine, a terrible Gnoger (his mother was a gnome and his father was an ogre), and a lost Prince who received very bad directions. Full of adventure, intrigue, humor and magic, The Daughter of the Double-Duke of Dingle is sure to find a place in your home and in your heart.

"Anyone suffering Downton Abbey withdrawal symptoms (who isn't?) will find an instant tonic in Daisy Goodwin's The American Heiress. The story of Cora Cash, an American heiress in the 1890s who bags an English duke, this is a deliciously evocative first novel that lingers in the mind." --Allison Pearson, New York Times bestselling author of I Don't Know How She Does It and I Think I Love You "For daughters of the new American billionaires of the 19th century, it was the ultimate deal: marriage to a cash-strapped British Aristocrat in return for a title and social status. But money didn't always buy them happiness." —DAISY GOODWIN IN THE DAILY MAIL Traveling abroad with her mother at the turn of the twentieth century to seek a titled husband, beautiful, vivacious Cora Cash, whose family mansion in Newport dwarfs the Vanderbilts', suddenly finds herself Duchess of Wareham, married to Ivo, the most eligible bachelor in England. In "The Duchess's Tattoo", Cora Cash is desperate to be a fashionable lady of society. Despite her title and her wealth, she finds that English society is not that welcoming to "The American Duchess." When Cora spies a distinctive snake tattoo on her mother-in-law's wrist, she decides that she must have one as well. It is up to the talented tattoo artist to save "The American Duchess" from herself. In addition to the short story, "The Duchess Tattoo", this also contains a letter from the author, Daisy Goodwin, on writing THE AMERICAN HEIRESS, an excerpt from "Titled Americans", an authentic quarterly publication from 1890 which listed all of the eligible titled bachelors still on the market, and an excerpt from AN AMERICAN HEIRESS, a moving and brilliantly entertaining debut novel coming from St. Martin's Press in June.

The Sylph by Georgiana - Duchess of Devonshire. The Sylph is a 1778 novel by Georgiana Cavendish, the Duchess of Devonshire. It was her second printed work and was published anonymously under the name 'A Young Lady'. The Sylph is an epistolatory novel. It centres on Julia Grenville, a Welsh beauty and ingenue (with whom there are parallels with Cavendish herself) who leaves her idyllic rustic life to marry a rich member of the aristocracy. Over the course of time she uncovers the fact that her husband is a rake and a libertine, lavishing his wealth on gambling and mistresses. The letters are chiefly written to her sisters and provide narrative detail about Julia's life in London and her disillusionment with the mores of the inhabitants of the city as well as her miscarriage. We also discover that she has a long-term admirer, Henry Woodley, that she has growing affections for another man (the Baron Ton-hausen) and also that she has a mysterious and enigmatic protector and guardian, who is the 'sylph' of the title. The sylph helps provide advice to Julia on the way to negotiate the labyrinth of metropolitan high society, appearing in the work only in the double fictional form of a masquerade. Eventually Julia's husband commits suicide as a result of his hefty gambling debts and Julia returns to her family in Wales. The book's epigraph is taken from The Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope and was influenced by The Sylph, a one-act play by Germain-Francois Poullain de Saint-Foix (1771). There has been some controversy over the authorship of the work, with some claims having been made that it was not written by Cavendish but was instead produced by Sophia Briscoe. The question of gambling debts is an interesting one, since at her death Cavendish herself left an extremely large bill behind based on her own gambling activity."

The Duchess of Bentley, is just out of mourning. As a widow, she has certain freedoms other women do not. But she has neither the time nor inclination to look for dalliance. She’s much too busy overseeing the very special properties left to her by the late duke—including the elite gaming hell known as Dante’s Inferno. Until another nobleman returns to London, and reminds her that she is still a young, passionate woman. The Duke of Evermont, has returned from his sugar plantations in the Caribbean. His life is full running his estates and seeing to his investments. The last thing he’s searching for is a wife. That is, until he sees Eleanor again, and other society beauties fade in comparison. The last time he saw her, Eleanor was walking down the aisle to another man. This time, Evermont is determined not to let the beautiful and vibrant lady slip through his hands. Fortunately for him, the duchess turns to him for help—and he’s more than willing to sweep her under his ducal cloak of protection. Whether his assistance is required in shielding her from members of society foolish enough to gamble away their fortunes, or from the heartless schemes of her own father—Evermont will do what it takes to show her their future together is a sure thing.
