A young Jan Sirks is drawing during class. He is fascinated with the play of light on the face of his history teacher. He knows he will be punished for drawing in class but he does not care. He simply has to draw. Pencils and brushes are a natural extension of the stubborn and highly artistic Rotterdammer.Convention forces him to become an administrator with the Dutch Iron Railway Company but he continues his artistic development. A coal-infused snow landscape leads him to Rembrandt's chiaroscuro and a fascination with etching. His life is transformed when he takes a studio to house his etching press and engages a model. The vivacious pianist Hillegonda, first model, then muse, opens the door to his artistic success. At a jury-free exhibition in Amsterdam, he sees Henri Le Fauconnier's figurative abstract paintings and becomes obsessed with artistic truth. A mind-expanding meditation results in haunting visions and he adds abstraction to his oeuvre of realist industrial etchings of Rotterdam. After buying Blavatsky's Secret Science, he falls into the Theosophy-cushioned world of modern Dutch art and meets many seemingly kindred spirits. With juries, galleries and museums in Rotterdam refusing to exhibit modern art, Jan and his new friends establish the avant-garde art movement De Branding in 1917. With their penciled manifesto, they battle for their right to exhibit in Rotterdam. When dogma disguised as messianic truth sneaks in, Jan has to fight a far more personal battle and decipher what it means to be a modern artist.

What sets this study apart from the vast literature on Monet is Gedo's focused, jargon-free, accessible, psychoanalytic assessment of Monet and his relationship with his first wife and mistress, Camille Doncieux, and the impact of this complex relationship on the artist's work. Using this psychobiographical approach in conducting a careful reading of primary source material and Monet's paintings, Gedo (independent scholar) does much to debunk a good deal of the mythology surrounding the artist's life at this period. She offers fresh insights into the content of many of Monet's major paintings, particularly his figurative works that feature Camille as a model or subject. So, for example, Gedo proposes that Monet's Camille (or The Woman in the Green Dress) from 1866, via its composition, "functioned as a metaphor for the uncertainty characterizing the relationship between lovers," in addition to exposing publicly Camille as Monet's mistress. As is the danger when applying psychoanalysis to the study of art history, some of Gedo's assertions and interpretations approach the level of implausibility; however, these flights of psychoanalytic fancy are few and far between. The writing is engaging, endnotes are extensive but not oppressive, and the book is sufficiently illustrated with many images in color. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Johannes Vermeer, a Dutch painter renowned for his nuanced portrayals of intimate interior scenes depicting middle-class life, left an indelible mark during the Baroque Period. Despite being a moderately successful provincial genre painter, he enjoyed recognition in Delft and The Hague. However, his financial circumstances did not mirror his artistic acclaim, and at the time of his demise, Vermeer left his wife and children grappling with debts. Vermeer's artistic process was characterized by a deliberate and meticulous approach, where he employed a palette of expensive colors. His distinct mastery of light became a hallmark of his work, setting him apart as an artist of exceptional skill and vision. Hans Koningsberger observed that Vermeer's paintings predominantly unfolded within two small rooms of his Delft residence. These compositions featured recurring furniture and settings, often highlighting the same individuals, primarily women. This thematic consistency added a unique signature to Vermeer's body of work. Posthumously, Vermeer's celebrity waned into obscurity, leading to his exclusion from notable surveys of Dutch art for over two decades. Arnold Houbraken's influential source book on 17th-century Dutch painting, the "Grand Theatre of Dutch Painters and Women Artists," barely acknowledged Vermeer. However, a resurgence occurred in the 19th century, spearheaded by Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Théophile Thoré-Bürger. In their influential essay, they attributed 66 paintings to Vermeer, a number that contrasts with the 34 universally recognized today. This rediscovery propelled Vermeer into the limelight, establishing him as one of the preeminent painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
