Music is a foundational language of being human. The singing voice can speak and depict the human condition with great expressiveness, and plays a hugely important role in music. However, scant attention has been paid to vocal reproduction in hi fidelity reproduction of music. Despite his huge profile as an opera singer, now, many years after his passing, Beniamino Gigli has been overlooked by many. These two themes intersect as no artist no longer living can be better recognised than being brought back to life by playing their music. Yet, with a singing voice as remarkable as Gigli’s, no ordinary attempt at audio reproduction will do it justice. Not only does this book explore and explain what is involved in the hi fidelity reproduction of the voice, it also discusses why Gigli’s singing is special and is still relevant in our musical era. His music highlights in stark relief changes that have happened in the recording and playback of music. In addition, while changes to listening practices have been well-studied, the implications for the experience of music have not. As Ernest Hemmingway said, most people never listen. Listening is an art, choice and gift. Through Gigli, this book also provides insights into the value of thoughtful listening. Listening begins and ends with, and is inseparable from, patience. When we make the time, music can gives us a glimpse of something beyond the horizons of materialism or our contemporary values.

“A tour de force of spine care from a master spine surgeon who has literally seen it all over the course of a four-decade career! This book is a must-read that is accessible to both the layperson and healthcare professionals. I found it both enjoyable and informative.” — Dr. Andrew J. Schoenfeld, Harvard Medical School professor and Spine editor in chief A practical and occasionally provocative look at the state of spinal surgical care Just a few decades ago most spine surgery was literally a gamble: maybe you’d get better and maybe you wouldn’t. Today we have the knowledge, understanding, and technology to predictably relieve pain and neurological deficits like never before — yet many patients are still getting subpar care. Foundational knowledge of surgical spine care isn’t spreading to the medical community, let alone to patients, whose quality of life hangs in the balance. With The Back Story on Spine Care, orthopedic specialist Dr. Drew Bednar presents case studies that illuminate the common issues plaguing patients — and their treatment — today. Back problems are among the most common health issues, and with Dr. Bednar’s insights, knowledge, and practical tips, medical professionals can provide care that leads to healthier backs and happier lives.

Consciousness And Self Regulation written by Gary Schwartz and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Psychology categories.

The first and foremost concrete fact which every one will affirm to belong to his inner experience is the fact that consciousness of some sort goes on. I -William James, 1893 We are witnessing today a mounting interest among behavioral and biological scientists in problems long recognized as central to our understanding of human nature, yet until recently considered out of the bounds of scientific psychology and physiology. Sometimes thrown into the heading of "altered states of consciousness," this growing research bears directly upon such time-honored questions as the nature of conscious experience, the mind-body relationship, and volition. If one broadly views this research as encompassing the two interrelated areas of consciousness and self-regulation, one can find many relevant contemporary examples of creative and experimentally sophisticated approaches, including research on the regulation of perception and sensory experience, attention, imagery and thinking, emotion and pain; hypnosis and meditation; biofeedback and volun tary control; hemispheric asymmetry and specialization of brain func tion; drug-induced subjective states; and biological rhythms. Because the material is spread over many different kinds of publications and disciplines, it is difficult for anyone person to keep fully abreast of the significant advances. The overall aim of the new Plenum Series in Consciousness and Self-Regulation: Advances in Research is to provide a scholarly forum for discussing integration of these diverse areas by presenting some of the best current research and theory.

Although books on the comedies of the silent era abound, few have attempted to survey film comedy as a whole—its history and evolution, how the philosophical visions of its greatest artists and directors have shaped its traditions, and how these visions have informed both the meaning and manner of their work. Blending information with interpretation, description with analysis, Mast traces the development of screen comedy from the first crude efforts of Edison and Lumière to the subtlety and psychological complexity of Annie Hall. As he guides the reader through detailed discussions of specific films, Mast reveals the structures, the values, and the cinematic techniques which have appeared and reappeared in comic cinema. The second edition of The Comic Mind treats the comic developments of the 1970s in terms of the traditions of film comedy set forth in the first edition, including a discussion of the evolution of Jacques Tati and the emergence of Mel Brooks and Woody Allen as the two greatest American comic stylists of the seventies. "The most comprehensive study of film comedy yet written in English. . . .The book's extensive index with references to companies from which 16mm prints of many of the cited films may be rented will be of great value to the film teacher and audiovisual librarian."—Choice

Eli S Story written by Meri-Jane Rochelson and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-06 with History categories.

Eli’s Story: A Twentieth-Century Jewish Life is first and foremost a biography. Its subject is Eli G. Rochelson, MD (1907–1984), author Meri-Jane Rochelson’s father. At its core is Eli’s story in his own words, taken from an interview he did with his son, Burt Rochelson, in the mid-1970s. The book tells the story of a man whose life and memory spanned two world wars, several migrations, an educational odyssey, the massive disruption of the Holocaust, and finally, a frustrating yet ultimately successful effort to restore his professional credentials and identity, as well as reestablish family life. Eli’s Story contains a mostly chronological narration that embeds the story in the context of further research. It begins with Eli’s earliest memories of childhood in Kovno and ends with his death, his legacy, and the author’s own unanswered questions that are as much a part of Eli’s story as his own words. The narrative is illuminated and expanded through Eli’s personal archive of papers, letters, and photographs, as well as research in institutional archives, libraries, and personal interviews. Rochelson covers Eli’s family’s relocation to southern Russia; his education, military service, and first marriage after he returned to Kovno; his and his family’s experiences in the Dachau, Stutthof, and Auschwitz concentration camps—including the deaths of his wife and child; his postwar experience in the Landsberg Displaced Persons (DP) camp, and his immigration to the United States, where he determinedly restored his medical credentials and started a new family. Rochelson recognizes that both the effort of reconstructing events and the reality of having personal accounts that confirm and also differ from each other in detail, make the process of gap-filling itself a kind of fiction—an attempt to shape the incompleteness that is inherent to the story. In the epilogue, the author reminds readers that the stories of lives don’t have clear chronologies. They go off in many directions, and in some ways they never end. An earlier reviewer said of the book, "Eli’s Story combines the care of a scholar with the care of a daughter." Both scholars and general readers interested in Holocaust narratives will be moved by this monograph.
