Excerpt from The Early Court of Queen Victoria No apology need be made for this book, though perhaps a reason for publishing it may be given. In these pages I have endeavoured to show Queen Victoria in her natural setting during her youth, hoping thereby to present her as a really human person. For twenty-five years at least the tendency among those who write has been so to overwhelm the late Queen with adulation that the ordinary reader turns from the subject in disgust. We are not fit for perfection; we believe that perfection is only an ideal-one which would probably become insufferable were it to de generate into actuality - and when biographers, Whose line, it is true, has been more or less laid down for them, depict Queen Victoria without fault and possess ing almost preternatural wisdom and virtue, then there must be danger of unpopularity for the great Queen. Excerpt from Queen Victoria as I Knew Her After my book was completed, the same con fidential relations continued. This gave me such unusual opportunity of observing Her Majesty's qualities of mind and heart, that I am tempted to place on record so much of what I saw as may without impropriety be told. What she was as a Sovereign will be for historians to tell; it is only of the woman as she became revealed to me that I would speak, using, where I may, her own words, as I find them in looking back upon the very voluminous correspondence with which I was honoured through many years. The endearing qualities of the Queen have been acknowledged by all who knew her. They secured for her what might be truly called the affectionate devotion of the men and women of her Court. I belonged to the outer world, but by no one were these qualities more warmly felt than by myself; for to the end. Excerpt from Queen Victoria This Prince was clever enough to get round the Regent, to impress the Ministers, and to make friends with another of the Princess's uncles, the Duke of Kent. Through the Duke he was able to communicate privately with the Princess, who now declared that he was necessary to her happi ness. When, after Waterloo, he was in Paris, the Duke's aide-de-camp carried letters backwards and forwards across the Channel. In January 1816 he was invited to England, and in May the marriage took place.3. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Personal Life of Queen Victoria The aim of the writer of this "Life" has been to narrate those incidents which tend most to reveal the personal history and character of the Queen, and no attempt has been made to deal with the events of her reign which belong more to the historian than to the personal biographer. In writing of one so illustrious and far removed from ordinary acquaintance and observation, the difficulties of faithful portraiture are apparent; but the frank manner in which Her Majesty has revealed the details of her domestic life in Sir Theodore Martin's "Life of the Prince Consort," the two volumes of "Leaves from Our Journal in the Highlands," and the "Memoir of Princess Alice," makes the task easier. In addition to these sources of information, I am indebted to the "Greville Memoirs," the "Life of Baron Stockmar." Excerpt from A History of Our Own Times, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Accession of Queen Victoria to the General Election of 1880 Before half-past two o'clock on the morning of June 20, 1837, William IV. was lying dead in Windsor Castle, while the messengers were already hurrying off to Kensington Palace to bear to his successor her summons to the throne. The illness of the king had been but short, and at one time, even after it had been pronounced alarming, it seemed to take so hopeful a turn that the physicians began to think it would pass harmlessly away. But the king was an old man - was an old man even when he came to the throne, and when the dangerous symptoms again exhibited themselves, their warning was very soon followed by fulfillment. The death of King William may be fairly regarded as having closed an era of our history. With him, we may believe, ended the reign of personal government in England. William was indeed a constitutional king in more than mere name. He was to the best of his lights a faithful representative of the constitutional principle. He was as far in advance of his two predecessors in understanding and acceptance of the principle as his successor has proved herself beyond him. Constitutional government has developed itself gradually, as everything else has done in English politics. The written principle and code of its system it would be as vain to look for as for the British constitution itself. King William still held to and exercised the right to dismiss his ministers when he pleased and because he pleased. His father had held to the right of maintaining favorite ministers in defiance of repeated votes of the House of Commons. Excerpt from The Married Life of Queen Victoria The married life Of an individual predicates a second individual, and this volume is as much a con sideration Of the Character of the Prince Consort as Of that Of Queen Victoria. Though in his youth he pro fessed liberal tendencies, the Prince was a strong up holder Of Monarchy, and resisted with all his strength anything that he considered an encroachment on the powers Of the Crown. He went further, for his life in England was, On one side of it, a long attempt to put back the hands Of the clock and reinstate authority which had already been delegated to Parliament. Had the Prince lived long, the history Of England would have been very different from what it is, for either our Parliament would have succumbed to his ideals, and England would have become reactionary, or the struggle between the people and the Crown would have ended in the abolition of the Monarchy; and it is not difficult to believe which part the English people would have chosen in the critical time Of thirty and forty years ago.
