Excerpt from The Early Hanoverians This book did not form one of the Epochs of History as I originally designed the series. Many of the subjects treated in it were intended to find a place in other volumes. But in the course of writing such other volumes room was not spared for them, and those who managed the series after my departure from England thought that this volume was needed to supply a gap. It is a continuation of my Epoch called 'the Age of Anne.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of England, From the Earliest Times to the Death of George the Second, Vol. 3 of 4 The two parties which had long divided the kingdom, under the names of Whig and Tory, now seemed to alter their titles; and, as the old epithets had lost their virulence by frequent use, the Whigs were now styled Hanoverians, and the Tories were branded with the ap pellation of J acobltes The former boasted of a pro testant king, the latter of an hereditary monarch; the former urged the wisdom of their new sovereign, and the latter alleged that theirs was an Englishman. It is easy to perceive, that the choice would rest upon him whose wisdom and religion promised the people the greatest security. Excerpt from Memoirs of a Maid of Honour It seems only yesterday that I received the letter which informed me of my appointment to the Household of Her Majesty Queen Mary. How well I remember it! It was not, of course, unexpected, but, for all that, an entirely new life seemed from that day to begin for me. There still remained some months before the coronation, and much for me to do before then. We hurried up to London and plunged at once into a vortex of clothes and photographers. In comparison with our practical outfits to-day, those clothes seem now too odd to be true! High collars, heavily whale-boned up to the ears, skirts trailing on the ground with heavy, ugly pleats, which the satin or petersham belt held securely into the waist in bunchy folds! Perched hats of outrageous shape, and ungainly muffs! However, to eyes that had seen no better, they seemed all that was appropriate and fashionable. I was, I remember, a little nonplussed (even in those days) by the length of my skirts, as the prevailing fashion had already lifted them an inch or two off the ground, so that occasionally in the fast set an ankle bone might be visible! However, in Court circles, ankle bones were not countenanced, and I remember my excited little fitters kneeling on the ground behind me arranging the heavy folds of black gabardine (an outrageous material) to the exact regulation Court length. Excerpt from A School Atlas of English History Of the English Pe0p1e, ' and England and France, July 1185 (no. Founded on a map in Miss K. Norgate's England under the Angevin Kings.' Two of the maps of Ireland (nos. 21 and 24) are taken with the permission of the author from Mr. Bagwell's Ireland under the Tudors; England and Wales, 1485 - 1603 (no. With a few additions, from Mr. 'moberly's Early Tudors Central Britain, 1715-1745; with the addition of Prince Charles Edward's route, from Morris's Early Hanoverians.' For the plans of the battles of the Nile (no. Of Copenhagen (no. 83) and Trafalgar (no. And for the two maps of the battle of Waterloo (nos. 86, taken from the atlas to Alison's History of Europe, ' I have to thank Messrs. Blackwood. The map of India in 1804 (no. 54) is taken from one published by the British Government. It is not in the library of the British Museum, but a copy is in the possession of Mr. S. J. Owen, who brought it to my notice, and there is another copy in the library of the House of Commons, from which, by permission of Mr. R. F. D. Palgrave, clerk of the House of Commons, a reduced copy is here given. The system of colouring in the original map is, however, too complicated for school purposes, and I have therefore substituted for it the simpler colouring adopted in other maps of India in this volume. I have, however, retained the references as in the original map, for the sake of those who may not have access to the map as originally published. I have given to the British Museum library the tracing taken for me with the original colouring, so that it may be consulted there by those interested in the matter. Samuel B. Grumman. In 1714, king George I ushered in a remarkable 123-year period of energy that changed the face of Britain and ultimately had a profound effect on the modern era. The pioneers of modern capitalism, industry, democracy, literature, and even architecture flourished during this time and their innovations and influence spread throughout the British empire, including the United States. Now this rich cultural period in Britain is effectively surveyed and summarized for quick reference in a first-of-its-kind encyclopedia, which contains entries by British, Canadian, American, and Australian scholars specializing in everything from finance and the fine arts to politics and patent law. More than 380 illustrations, mostly rare engravings, enhance the coverage, which runs the whole gamut of political, economic, literary, intellectual, artistic, commercial, and social life, and spotlights some 600 prominent individuals and families.
