In the Book of Genesis, ch. x. v. 6, 6fc. we have the following account of the descent of the Egyptians, and of all the nations with whom they were most closely connected in war and peace. " And the sons of Ham, Cush, Arabia and Assyria. and Mizraim, Egypt. and Phut, and Canaan; The aborigines of the land of Canaan. " And the sons of Cush, Seba, Petra. See Isaiah, xlv. 14. and Havilah, Armenia? and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah, and Nimrod (the Hunter, and the beginning of his king-dom was Babel), the Assyrian empire. " The sons of Raamah, Sheba, The incense country of Arabia, whose queen visited Solomon. and Dedan. " And Mizraim begat Ludim, Ethiopians, before the Cushite invasion? and Anamim, and Lehabim, Africa to the west of the Nile, Lybia. and Naphtuhim, Arabia Nabataea, of which Petra was the capital. and Pathrusim, Upper Egypt. See Is. xi. 11; Jer. xliv. 1. and Casluhim, On the coast between Egypt and the Philistines. " These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, in their nations." Sfc. The explanation of this history of the descent of the nations that were descendants of Ham is attended with very great difficulty; and this difficulty is further increased by our finding that, at the earliest period to which our knowledge reaches, in most of the countries here described as peopled by descendants of Cush, an Arabic dialect was spoken, which, from its close analogy to Hebrew, would have led us to call them sons of Shem. It might be...

Excerpt from The Early History of Egypt: From the Old Testament, Herodotus, Manetho, and the Hieroglyphical Incriptions The object of the Author in the following pages has been to collect out of the writings of the ancients every particular relating to the History of Egypt, before the conquest of that country by the Persians. The collection is no doubt far from complete, but probably contains all the most important passages now extant; and, however unsatisfactory these fragments may be thought, upon these, assisted by the remaining monuments of the country, the History of Egypt at that early period must rest. The extracts from each historian are placed separately, so that, in the words of Herodotus quoted in the title page, " each person may use those which he thinks may be relied upon and the remarks which are added, with a view to explain the extracts, and to show how far the account of one historian is consistent with that of another, are also kept distinct, so that the value of the quotations may not be lessened by the errors of the criticisms.
