Heathen, the first book in the series, follows the story of a hero longing to return to his shattered homeland and restore peace and order to his people. However, our hero, Kulin Birsk, ends up starting the famous Viking revolution instead. Ripped from his homeland and sold into slavery, Kulin is bought by a kind old warrior who raises him like a son and teaches him to fight in the besirkir ways of old. As our hero grows up and matures, he uses this skill to become a mercenary leading his own unit. Meanwhile, the homelands of his people are torn in war and oppression while the Saxons, friends of his people, are hard pressed by the Christian Franks. Although scholars have long recognized the mythic status of bears in Indigenous North American societies of the past, this is the first volume to synthesize the vast amount of archaeological and historical research on the topic. Bears charts the special relationship between the American black bear and humans in eastern Native American cultures across thousands of years. These essays draw on zooarchaeological, ethnohistorical, and ethnographic evidence from nearly 300 archaeological sites from Quebec to the Gulf of Mexico. Contributors explore the ways bears have been treated as something akin to another kind of human—in the words of anthropologist Irving Hallowell, “other than human persons”—in Algonquian, Cherokee, Iroquois, Meskwaki, Creek, and many other Native cultures. Case studies focus on bear imagery in Native art and artifacts; the religious and economic significance of bears and bear products such as meat, fat, oil, and pelts; bears in Native worldviews, kinship systems, and cosmologies; and the use of bears as commodities in transatlantic trade. The case studies in Bears demonstrate that bears were not only a source of food, but were also religious, economic, and political icons within Indigenous cultures. This volume convincingly portrays the black bear as one of the most socially significant species in Native eastern North America. A volume in the Florida Museum of Natural History: Ripley P. Bullen Series

Bear Lake is located 100 km northeast of Salt Lake City and lies along the course of the Bear River, the largest river in the Great Basin. The lake, which is one of the oldest extant lakes in North America, occupies a tectonically active half-graben and contains hundreds of meters of Quaternary sediment. This volume is the culmination of more than a decade of coordinated investigations aimed at a holistic understanding of this long-lived alkaline lake in the semiarid western United States. Its 14 chapters, with 20 contributing authors, contain geological, mineralogical, geochemical, paleontological, and limnological studies extending from the drainage basin to the depocenter. The studies span both modern and paleoenvironments, including a 120-m-long sediment core that captures a continuous record of the last two glacial-interglacial cycles.

Man-eating black bears, volume 1, is a classic in bear literature, in that it is the first book to ever gather together, hundreds of stories about man-eating black bear attacks on human beings. Its one of three consecutive volumes, totalling about 1,000 pages, that in total documents between 400 and 500 man-eaters in minute detail. It explains why the popular term "predatory black bear" is junk science. Such animals really are man-eaters. Volume 1 concerns itself with man-eaters from east of the Mississipi River and east of the Ontario/Manitoba border dating back as far as the Jesuit Relations of 1672. There have been many man-eating black bears in states such as Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, and in the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick that are long forgotten. Black bears have eaten people in the city of Detroit. The book rebootsmany old stories and collates them with a great many new incidents. There have been a minimum of 10 man-eating black bears in North America in the past three years. Man-eating black bears develop peculiar traits that differ from most other types of man-eating wild animals such as lions, tigers and leopards. They are just about always healthy and well fed and they often eat their human victims alive. They can do this because they have strong arm muscles and short hooked claws, designed for tree climbing, that enables them to hold their victims so firmly that they cannot escape. They have no need to kill their their prey quickly. They are eaters not killers. The pioneers called this forgotten trait the "bear hug" and it really does exist although it just a firm grip and does not kill of itself. Black bears enjoy eating human flesh and blood as much as any other food and will often eat it in preference to more readily available foods such as fish and hamburger. Volume one also documents rabid black bears, with the furious form of the disease, that have been roaming the woodlands of eastern North America since 1970. It also lists missing people that the author is convinced have been taken from lonely forest trails by bears. It discusses the link between man-eating black bears, human remains and the mythical Wendigo. Man-eating black bears volume 1 is very well illustrated with many photos including pictures of the Lone Creek man-eater, The Lake Abitibi man-eater, The Madoc rabid bear, and possibly the Lake Opeongo man-eater. The author also discusses the background of the individuals that helped him to ground his man-eater studies. For example, he accompanied the wildlife biologist George Kolenosky on his bear studies. Kolenosky was the lead investigator for the Lone Creek Man-eater, the Lake Opeongo man-eater and the Lake Abitibi man-eater. George also helped to shoot the Lake Abitibi man-eater. Mr. Gorsline was at lone Creek in Algonquin Park hours after the Lone Creek man-eater, hunted down, killed and ate three young men. He photographed the the search for the missing boys and the men who hunted the bear down. These very detailed photographs appear for the first time ever in volume 1.

Master's Thesis from the year 2002 in the subject Biology - Ecology, grade: 2 (B), University of Vienna (Institute for Ecology), language: English, abstract: “If all the brown bears are gone from the landscape we would be spiritually impoverished.” was the response from a researcher when she was asked why we should protect bears. This is only one of numerous answers to this question. Bears engage our interest, as do few other wild animals. But brown bears are not simply fascinating animals, they also play an important role in the ecosystem. They are considered 'sustainable farmers'. Many species, both plants and animals, profit by them. Brown bears dig much for food and thereby they stimulate plants to reproduce. Some Canadian scientists even consider grizzlies, conspecific with the Eurasian brown bear, to be an ecological keystone. “Without the grizzlies atop the food chain,” they say, “the West’s delicate mountain ecosystem would crumble.” They think that it could set off a chain reaction that would see other large animals become extinct. Coyotes and other predators would move in and do serious damage to the ungulate population. Grizzlies prey on live ungulates far less than coyotes or wolves. The bears ́ presence keeps other predators at bay. Other scientists such as Stephen Herrero, the head of the Eastern Slopes Grizzly Bear Project, do not believe in such dire predictions but Stephen Herrero agrees that the relationship between bears and the rest of the ecosystem is very complex (Sillars 1998). However, large carnivores, like grizzlies, have been considered indicators of health or integrity of an ecosystem (Paquet and Wierzchowski 1997a) and thus make them useful focal species for large-scale conservation. Landscapes that retain viable populations of brown bears are often ones where natural vegetation predominates, where most native species can still be found, and where ecological processes operate essentially as they have done for a long time (Paquet and Jack Wierzchowski 1997a). Habitats of brown bears can be huge, but vary greatly on individuals. A modest female can manage to live within a few square kilometres, and long distance travellers among grizzlies, that are mostly males, could need up to 1500 km2, which is as big as Kootenay National Park in Alberta or only a bit smaller than the Austrian “Hohe Tauern National Park”, the biggest national park in Central Europe.

The Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM) is a long-term, whole-watershed study examining the effects of experimentally elevated N and S deposition on a treated watershed, in comparison to the adjacent reference watershed. The study is in a northern New England, USA, forested ecosystem, and focuses on soil and stream hydrological and biogeochemical processes, and chemical responses of vegetation. Relative to the reference watershed, the treated ecosystem has migrated biogeochemically towards N saturation, and soil and stream acidification. Some of the responses to N amendments were not expected nor predicted by available models.

Black Bears written by J. David Taylor and has been published by Markham, ON : Fitzhenry & Whiteside this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Bears categories.

In 1990 author, naturalist and photographer Dave Taylor set out to research and photograph black bears in North America - a quest that took him from the high arctic to the swamps of Florida, and from the East Coast to the shores of the Pacific. Of the three species native to this part of the world - the grizzly or brown bear, the polar bear, and the black bear - Taylor devotes this beautifully embellished volume exclusively to the black bear, the most numerous of North America's three bear species. Lavishly illustrated throughout with more than 100 full-color photographs, maps and charts, Black Bears introduces the reader to this shy, reclusive and largely misunderstood animal with an encyclopedic examination of the black bear's world by state, province and territory. The diet, dens, mating habits, habitat, and hibernation are examined in Taylor's lively text, as is the bear's adaptation to the encroachment of civilization into its territory. A special section of the book dealing with bears and people, offers valuable advice on camping in bear country, and what to do when encountering bears in the wilderness.
