The third edition of The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks is an updated and expanded edition that explores oak forests as responsive ecosystems. New chapters emphasize the importance of fire in sustaining and managing oak forests, the effects of a changing climate, and advanced artificial regeneration techniques. This new edition expands on silvicultural methods for restoring and sustaining oak woodlands and savannahs, and on management of ecosystem services, including wildlife habitat. It also incorporates new material on evaluating landscape-scale, and cumulative effects of management action compared with inaction. Nine of the fifteen chapters cover updated information on the geographic distribution of US oaks, oak regeneration dynamics, site productivity, stocking and stand development, even- and uneven-aged silvicultural methods, and growth and yield. This edition includes a new section with colour illustrations for improved visualization of complex relationships. This book is intended for forest and wildlife managers, ecologists, silviculturists, environmentalists, and students of those fields.

This second edition contains ten chapters dealing with oak (Quercus)-related literature published since the first edition. Included are the relatively new subject areas of forest biomass use for fuel, the importance of carbon sequestration by forests, and how climate change is expected to affect the distribution of oaks and associated tree species. The chapters are grouped into three parts. The first part contains three chapters covering the ecological characteristics and distribution of oak species, the various kinds of oak forests in the USA and how they have been classified, and their history of human use. The second part comprises three chapters covering site productivity and stand development. An understanding of the productive capacity of oak forests is central to a broad spectrum of issues related to their management and potentialities, not only for timber but also for wildlife and other values, including carbon sequestration. The third part comprises four chapters on silvicultural methods and the growth and yield of oak forests.

Oak Forest Ecosystems focuses on the relationship between an oak forest's acorn yield and species of wildlife that depend on it. It begins by treating factors such as oak distribution, forest fires, tree diseases and pests, dynamics of acorn production, and acorn dispersal by birds and mammals. Special consideration is given to the phenomenon of masting—whereby oaks in a given area will produce huge crops of acorns at irregular intervals—a key component for wildlife researchers and managers in understanding patterns of scarcity and abundance in the creatures that feed on this crop. Relationships between oaks and animals such as mice, squirrels, turkeys, deer, and bear are discussed, as are the differences between eastern, southern Appalachian, southwestern, and California oak forests. Excerpt from Oak Regeneration: Serious Problems, Practical Recommendations; Symposium Proceedings, Knoxville, Tennessee, September 8-10, 1992 France designed to ensure oak establishment. Oak was an early export from the American colonies because it was scarce and expensive in England. Probably the first government sponsored forest research in the United States was attempts in Florida in the early 1800's to establish live oak (quercus virginiana) for shipbuilding. With the advent of technical forestry in this country there were references in early papers and textbooks to oak regeneration and the shelterwood method. This interest was primarily for academic study and followed European descriptions, but some of the earliest oak regeneration research related to concerns about areas without advance reproduction. In the late 1930's understory oaks were described in relation to past treatment. In the 1950's and 1960's researchers and ecologists began to quantify oak reproduction under various stand conditions on different sites. Mostly they found lots of understory oaks, but there were exceptions. Researchers thought these exceptions might be important and started to look more carefully at the response of oaks to harvest cutting. Even-aged cuttings quickly showed that on good oak sites without substantial numbers of vigorous advance oak the stands of the future would be quite different. The new stands generally contained less oak. At the same time observers noted that oak types were changing in some areas. More recently, comparisons of repeat forest surveys show a decline of oak types in some states. Increased prices for oak timber suggest that accelerated harvesting is adding to the ecological changes taking place. We find ourselves with a growing knowledge about oak ecology and silviculture but without a convincing history of being able to prescribe with certainty ways to increase the amount of oak in new stands. Considering the tremendous value of oak forests there is an urgency to improve oak management and to give high priority to long-term research.
