Although science has unlocked the secrets of the human genome, the causes of social and economic development remain stubbornly enigmatic. Why do some countries adopt new technologies more readily than others? Why does income inequality persist in some regions--even in the face of rapid economic growth? Why do some societies welcome the challenges of globalization while others attempt to turn back the tide? Honoring the Past, Building the Future examines these and many related questions through the experience of Latin America and the Caribbean. In an accessible, journalistic style, author Ricardo Ávila explores a tumultuous half-century in which the region went from backwater to breadbasket, from dictatorship to democracy, and from economic basket case to emerging power.

The Caribbean faces numerous economic, social and environmental challenges, with current projections predicting the road ahead to be filled with low levels of growth, high debt and low resilience. In Achieving a Resilient Future for Small States: Caribbean 2050, the contributors set out a long-term, research-based strategy for avoiding these projections, recommending a number of policy interventions aimed at building the region’s resilience and development prospects. Written by influential analysts and researchers and drawing on a wide cross-section of regional stakeholders and thought leaders, the study contains an assessment of the main challenges and opportunities for the region, scenario modelling of where the region could be by 2050, and a broad vision for the region with sector specific goals of how to get there.

The Caribbean is a complex, enigmatic region, characterised by great disparities in size, population, geography, history, language, religion, race and politics. This is a region in which harmony and discord work in tandem, trying to link economic logic with political logic. At the same time, this book is a comprehensive historical record especially highlighting hindrances to development in this region. This study raises two important issues: the ‘political imperative of convergence’ and the need for ‘appropriate correcting mechanisms’ that align the needs of the local with the regional. It is a volume that underlines the need for a change in strategy and makes proposals as to how to go about making those changes.

This collection is a critical reflection of the evolution of Caribbean countries since the demise of the West Indies Federation in 1962. At this historical juncture, some territories opted for independence while others remained dependent territories. The volume examines Caribbean societies in comparative and general ways, covering aspects of their ongoing development and challenges. It covers such areas as Caribbean integration, the state of human capital and social policy in the region, the education sector, Caribbean economic sustainability, and, significantly, the physical environment of the Caribbean. A central question has always been: should these territories have gone independent or stayed under some British tutelage? The book addresses this question, illustrating that these island states have made considerable progress, especially in the maintenance and deepening of democratic practices.

The small island developing states of the Caribbean have been slowing adopting initiatives and technologies that will bring them closer to their aspirations of being robust digital societies. The authors of this volume are academics and technologists who are actively engaged in the Caribbean technology for development ecosystem. This volume explores three broad themes: the political economy of developing intelligent economies in the Caribbean; culture and the intelligent economy, specifically, how Caribbean creative industries and technology can be leveraged in this new environment; and business and the intelligent economy, with special focus on the gig economy, business intelligence, agriculture, makerspaces, and corporation innovation.

The Caribbean Blue Economy written by Peter Clegg and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-22 with Political Science categories.

The Blue Economy is emerging on the global scene as a powerful and persuasive new concept for sustainable development based on economic activities associated with the ocean. Several regions globally have adopted this concept at national and regional levels, including the Caribbean. Given the complex, multisectoral and multilevel nature of the Blue Economy, it is clear that different approaches will be needed for different regions. Hence, this volume explores the opportunities, threats and risks involved in operationalising the Blue Economy in the Wider Caribbean Region, defined as northern Brazil to the USA and all mainland and island countries and territories in-between. The first part of the book looks at where the region stands in the global picture regarding adoption of the Blue Economy and what is planned. The second set of chapters examines key crosscutting issues such as ecosystem services, climate change and governance at national and regional levels that could make or break the Blue Economy initiative. The book then goes on to explore the main sectoral activities that will constitute the Blue Economies in the region: fisheries, tourism, shipping and transport, renewable energy, oil and gas, seabed mining and waste management are all considered. The book ends with a synthesis of the political and technical requirements to overcome threats and take advantage of opportunities in the Blue Economy.
