Japan and the Internet Revolution challenges the portrait of Japan as a technologically slow-moving nation, lacking in creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. From a slow start, Japan has emerged as the global leader in the mobile internet, the host of arguably the strongest nation-specific web-presence in the world, and a country determined to remain near the forefront of the digital revolution.

As the single most important general purpose technology of recent times, the Internet is transforming the organization, competitive structure and business models of the private, the public and non-profit sectors. In 27 original chapters, leading authors discuss theoretical and applied frameworks for the study of the economics of the Internet and its unique economics as a global information and communications infrastructure. They also examine the effects of the Internet on economic transactions (including social production, advertising, innovation, and intellectual property rights), the economics and management of Internet-based industries (including search, news, entertainment, culture, and virtual worlds), and the effects of the Internet on the economy at large.

Six Years that Shook the World provides a short, but deep history of the internet, telecom and optical market revolutions that has initiated an evolution from a global push economic structure to an emerging pull economic model. The internet and telecom boom of the 1990s and its crash post-2000 were the product of a cycle of regulation and deregulation that will in time result in the change of the regulatory controls on the communication industry of America. The internet is the lowest-cost and most powerful economic transaction medium available to corporations with which an economic transaction can be completed. It provides global reach assuming network and computing infrastructure is present. The value of the internet as a transaction medium becomes apparent when it is put into the context of the chain of commerce. The internet provides the end-user, whether consumer or businesses, with constant availability of information and the continuous ability to execute transactions. Transactions can be any computing event that triggers an exchange of value for support of the transaction. Lowering the cost of transactions and improving productivity by leveraging the internet will drive economic development. Telecom deregulation in 1934 and 1996 released inherent monopolized market value, which was the determining factor for significant capital investments and produced the genesis proofs of a pull economy - but provided an insufficient amount of infrastructure to achieve the revolutionary vision of a new economy and failed to ensure American leadership in a global economy. Investment in the communication infrastructure is mandatory to ensure the United States is the leader in the emerging pull economic structure. Six Years that Shook the World describes the cycle of innovation and deregulation in the context of the telecom and networking industries. It argues that the communications industry that was invented in America is now being led by multi-national companies who are located in other nation-states. America is on the verge of forever relinquishing our leadership in networking and telecommunications, because we are failing to ensure the establishment of a real and complete technology infrastructure for a new economy in the United States.

The Computer Revolution written by Daniel E. Sichel and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Business & Economics categories.

During the 1980s and into this decade, U.S. businesses poured billions of dollars into computers and other information technology. Yet the productivity performance of the U.S. economy in the 1980s remained lackluster--especially in the service sector--leading many observers to suspect that companies were not getting their money's worth from these high-tech investments. At the same time, academic research found little evidence of a productivity payoff. But have the tables now turned? With an apparent improvement in productivity in recent years, much academic and popular opinion now suggests that the payback is at hand or just around the corner. As the nation embarks on a major effort to develop an Information Superhighway, it is critical for policymakers, opinion leaders, and others to understand the contribution and role of information technology in the economy during recent decades. This book provides a straightforward guide to the economic issues underlying the debates about these issues, using quantitative and historical analysis, supplemented with interviews of small and large service-sector companies. To set the stage, Daniel Sichel reviews the debates over the role of computers and summarizes the essential facts about computer use, with a particular emphasis on software. Going beyond basic facts, Sichel describes an economic framework for assessing the aggregate economic impact of computers in recent decades and for looking ahead at this impact in the future. Quantitative estimates from this framework, along with supporting historical and interview evidence, place limits on the contribution of computers to the overall economy. When compared to the size of the slowdown in productivity growth in the early 1970s, the overall impact of computers appears relatively modest, in part because the share of computers in the nation's capital stock is surprisingly small. Looking ahead, Sichel also raises questions as to whether computers are likely to solve the nation's productivity woes in the future.
