Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875–1932) was born into poverty as an illegitimate London child and left school at age 12. He joined the army at age 21 and was a war correspondent during the Second Boer War, for Reuters and the Daily Mail. Struggling with debt, he left South Africa, returned to London, and began writing thrillers to raise income, publishing books including The Four Just Men (1905). Drawing on his time as a reporter in the Congo, covering the Belgian atrocities, Wallace serialised short stories in magazines such as The Windsor Magazine and later published collections such as Sanders of the River (1911). He signed with Hodder and Stoughton in 1921 and became an internationally recognised author. After an unsuccessful bid to stand as Liberal MP for Blackpool (as one of David Lloyd George's Independent Liberals) in the 1931 general election, Wallace moved to Hollywood, where he worked as a script writer for RKO studios. He died suddenly from undiagnosed diabetes, during the initial drafting of King Kong (1933). Wallace was such a prolific writer that one of his publishers claimed that a quarter of all books sold in England were written by him. As well as journalism, Wallace wrote screen plays, poetry, historical non-fiction, 18 stage plays, 957 short stories, and over 170 novels (12 in 1929 alone). More than 160 films have been made of Wallace's work. He is remembered for the creation of King Kong, as a writer of 'the colonial imagination', for the J. G. Reeder detective stories, and for The Green Archer serial. He sold over 50 million copies of his combined works in various editions, and The Economist describes him as "one of the most prolific thriller writers of [the 20th] century." Included in this volume are: Four Just Men The Angel of Terror The Blue Hand The Clue of the Twisted Candle The Valley of Ghosts If you enjoy this ebook, don't forget to search your favorite ebook store for "Wildside Press Megapack" to see more of the 300+ volumes in this series, covering adventure, historical fiction, mysteries, westerns, ghost stories, science fiction -- and much, much more!

Edgar Wallace's 'The Four Just Men Series' stands as a seminal work in the early 20th-century detective thriller genre, marked by its exploration of vigilantism and justice outside the bounds of conventional law enforcement. The series introduces George Manfred, Leon Gonsalez, Raymond Poiccart, and later recruit Thery, as they navigate the moral complexities of exacting punishment on those who evade legal repercussions. Wallace's narrative, rich in suspense and moral ambiguity, utilizes a pioneering serialized storytelling that influenced subsequent detective fiction. His work mirrors the socio-political anxieties of his time, encapsulating themes of justice, retribution, and the efficacy of the legal system. Interweaving backdrop and character development through successive novels, Wallace creates an intricate and evolving literary tapestry. As an overwhelmingly prolific writer, Edgar Wallace's background in journalism, screenwriting, and indeed a breathtaking array of literary endeavors, equipped him with a unique skill set that vividly informed his fiction. Crafting over 170 novels, Wallace's extensive output reflects his engagement with a rapidly changing world, driven by a profound understanding of societal injustices and the human condition. This deep well of experience lends authenticity to the Four Just Men, capturing the imagination of a readership grappling with the shifting sands of early 20th-century morality and law. 'The Four Just Men Series' is recommended for enthusiasts of classic detective thrillers and those immersed in the historical evolution of the genre. It provides a window into the mindset of an era, while the narrative itself remains timeless in its exploration of the perennial question of what constitutes true justice. Wallace's masterful storytelling invites readers to contemplate the delicate balance between right and wrong, making the series a compelling read for anyone drawn to the intricate webs woven by justice and vengeance.

THE PRISONER OF HEAVEN returns to the world of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and the Sempere & Sons bookshop. It begins just before Christmas in Barcelona in 1957, one year after Daniel and Bea from THE SHADOW OF THE WIND have married. They now have a son, Julian, and are living with Daniel's father at Sempere & Sons. Fermin still works with them and is busy preparing for his wedding to Bernarda in the New Year. However something appears to be bothering him. Daniel is alone in the shop one morning when a mysterious figure with a pronounced limp enters. He spots one of their most precious volumes that is kept locked in a glass cabinet, a beautiful and unique illustrated edition of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Despite the fact that the stranger seems to care little for books, he wants to buy this expensive edition. Then, to Daniel's surprise, the man inscribes the book with the words 'To Fermin Romero de Torres, who came back from the dead and who holds the key to the future'. This visit leads back to a story of imprisonment, betrayal and the return of a deadly rival ...
