Excerpt from The Education of the Ne'er-Do-Well So long as the school's standards are academic rather than social, it is inevitable that the schools themselves should be institutions primarily concerned with those who have a special genius or talent for the formal or abstract intellectual disciplines. In the past our educational system has undoubtedly favored the scholastic turn of mind. It has neglected the training of other types of mentality, such as are required in industry, art, and business. The usual route to these large groups of occupations was, at one time at least, the route of failure at school. This was particularly true of those who were destined to perform the minor services in these fields of labor. Traditionally, mental power was held to be coincident with the narrower limits of academic ability, an assumption to which the thoughtful pedagogue will not subscribe in these days of more careful professional thinking. This fallacy was a tragic one for many human beings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Education Of Blacks In The South 1860 1935 written by James D. Anderson and has been published by Univ of North Carolina Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-27 with Social Science categories.

James Anderson critically reinterprets the history of southern black education from Reconstruction to the Great Depression. By placing black schooling within a political, cultural, and economic context, he offers fresh insights into black commitment to education, the peculiar significance of Tuskegee Institute, and the conflicting goals of various philanthropic groups, among other matters. Initially, ex-slaves attempted to create an educational system that would support and extend their emancipation, but their children were pushed into a system of industrial education that presupposed black political and economic subordination. This conception of education and social order--supported by northern industrial philanthropists, some black educators, and most southern school officials--conflicted with the aspirations of ex-slaves and their descendants, resulting at the turn of the century in a bitter national debate over the purposes of black education. Because blacks lacked economic and political power, white elites were able to control the structure and content of black elementary, secondary, normal, and college education during the first third of the twentieth century. Nonetheless, blacks persisted in their struggle to develop an educational system in accordance with their own needs and desires.

This edited book is a comprehensive resource for understanding the history as well as the current status of educational practices in Singapore. It is a one-stop reference guide to education and educational issues/concerns here. There are three sections: Part 1 provides a sectorial overview of how education has been organized in this country such as preschool, special needs, primary and secondary, and adult education divisions. In Part 2, contributors critically delve into issues and policies that are pertinent to understanding education here such as underachievement, leadership, language education, assessment, and meritocracy to question what Part 1 might have taken for granted. Part 3 contains the largest number of contributors because it offers a scholarly examination into specific subject histories. This section stands out because of the comparative rarity of its subject matter (history of Physical Education, Art, Music, Geography Education, etc.) in Singapore.

Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ...to be to the whole family. My father and my mother learned Latin enough to understand it perfectly well, and to speak it to such a degree as was necessary for ordinary use; as well also did the servants who were most frequently with me. In short, we were all so Latinized that it overflowed to the neighbouring towns, where it yet remains in several Latin appellations of artisans and their tools. As for myself, I was more than six years of age before I understood either French or Perigordian any more than Arabic.86 I had r learned to speak as pure Latin as my master L himself without art, book, grammar or precept, whipping or a single tear. If, for example, they were to give me a theme after the college fashion, they gave it to the others in French, but to me in bad Latin, to turn it into pure and good. Nicholas Grouchy, who wrote De Comitiis Romanorum; William Guerente, who has written a Commentary on Aristotle; George Buchanan, the famous Scottish poet; and Mark Antony Murel, whom both France and Italy have acknowledged as the best orator of his time--my domestic tutor--have all of them told me that even in my infancy I understood Latin so well they were afraid to talk with me. Buchanan, whom I afterward saw attending upon the late Marshal de Brissac, told me he intended to write a treatise upon Education, taking for his model my own education. He was then tutor to the young Count de Brissac, who afterward became so valiant and so brave a gentleman. As to Greek, of which I have but a smattering, my father proposed to teach it by a new device, making of it a sort Use of motor .., a--itt side of sport and recreation.' We tossed our declensions and conjugations to and fro, after the manner of those who by certain games at table and...
