The effect of aberrations on coherent imaging systems and the utility of apodisation in improving the performance of such systems was theoretically and experimentally investigated. The imaging performance of these systems was evaluated in terms of the images of certain simple objects--a point, two closely-spaced points, an edge, and a slit. Apodisation is defined as the deliberate modification of the amplitude transmittance of the exit pupil of the optical system. The effects on the imaging performance for various amounts of defocus, astigmatism, coma, and spherical aberration were determined for both unapodised and apodised systems. It is well known that for an aberration-free system, apodisation is effective in moderating the deleterious effects of the coherent imaging process. Since all real optical systems have aberrations, this dissertation addressed the more general case of apodisation in aberrated coherent imaging systems. It was found that apodisation was effective in improving the performance of these aberrated systems, i.e., ringing in the image of an edge or slit was greatly reduced and the mensuration error in the image of two points was almost eliminated. The performance of an unaberrated system was seen to be a special case. Experiments have been conducted which verified the theoretical model which was used to make extensive theoretical predictions. Keywords include: Apodisation, Coherent imaging, Imaging, and Aberrations.

The effects of Gaussian apodisation with -0.8 waves of spherical aberration on a coherent optical system was examined. The area of study was in the near field concentrating on the areas near the focus in the Fresnel region of an f/12 system using optical wavelengths. Computer predictions were made for four cases: unapodised-unaberrated, apodised-unaberrated, unapodised-aberrated, and apodised-aberrated. Predictions were made for cross sectional planes perpendicular to the optical axis using Fourier optics. Merdional plane predictions were produced using a numerical integration method of determining the Kirchoff integral. Additionally, experimental data are given to compare with the predictions. It is shown that the experimental data matches the computer predictions and that apodisation is an effective method for controlling the ringing due to edge effects and spherical aberrations. Additionally, fine structure corresponding to Young's double slit interference in unapodised cases.

This investigation determined that the application of a Gaussian apodiser did not improve the imaging performance through a coherent multiaperture optical imaging system. This was the case whether the object was a point source or an edge, whether the dilution was increased or held constant, or whether aberrations were present or not present. Further, the investigation determined that the amount of spacing between the subaperture which either an aberrated or unaberrated optical system could tolerate and still obtain acceptable imaging fell dramatically. The analysis was accomplished with computer codes which made use of Fourier transform techniques to perform the imaging. The edge imaging results of this study can be applied without loss of generality to that of an imaging system with an annular exit pupil. (Theses).

It is known that a phase-perturbed object field from a fractal-like rough surface illuminated by a partially coherent beam generates speckle on the image plane. In this works, aberration effects on Gaussian speckle on the image plane in both perfectly and partially coherent systems are theoretically and experimentally investigated. Theory shows that the second order statistics of Gaussian laser speckle are independent of odd-functional aberrations, but they do affect Gaussian speckle contrast in a partially coherent system. Furthermore, it is theoretically derived that field statistics of Gaussian laser speckle generally become non-circular Gaussian due to aberrations, and an aberration effect is asymptotically ignorable for very weak or strong roughness. A brute force simulation method is introduced for non-Gaussian speckle in a partially coherent imaging system, where speckle irradiance is calculated from a quasi-monochromatic extended incoherent source. The source is modeled as a collection of independent point sources distributed on a regular grid. The partially coherent speckle pattern is calculated from the incoherent sum of coherent speckle patterns in the image plane generated from each point source. Speckle contrasts from a brute force model show good agreement with theoretical and experimental results. It is determined that non-Gaussian speckle contrast is strongly dependent on Hurst exponent of fractal rough surfaces using brute force simulations. The concept of a contributing object area at a fixed image point effectively explains the speckle contrast dependency. Measuring spherical aberrations using Gaussian laser speckle is discussed as one of applications and future works of the present study.
