Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: As more and more people immigrate and organizations globalize lead to the fact that people with different cultural roots have to collaborate with one another and to work together in a local workplace. Furthermore, competitive challenges and the importance of flexibility and adjustment on the part of companies there can be witnessed in a great expansion of work teams. Therefore, a commonplace practice concerning the culturally diverse composition of work groups can be recognized as is the case in organizations like Unilever, ABB, the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation, IBM and Reckitt Benckiser, only to mention a few. Organizations have to develop effective multicultural teams, which means that organizations have to think more clearly about cross-cultural issues and more fully understand and value the benefits of cultural diversity in teams. Furthermore due to the continued growth of culturally diverse work teams, the understanding the effect cultural diversity has on team processes is both appropriate and pressing. This fact is very important as the team effectiveness depends on the processes. Due to being involved in such a multicultural working environment by having different student jobs at an internationally operating company called Reckitt Benckiser, practical insight was gained into the trend multicultural teams . This insight and the growing trend of using multicultural teams in today s organizations make it interesting to deepen the phenomenon within the dissertation. The author is interested in gaining knowledge of which effects cultural diversity has on team processes. Academic objectives of dissertation: This study follows Earley & Gardner s and Watson s perception of multicultural teams that implies that those teams consist of two or more members that have different nationalities and therefore different cultural backgrounds. This dissertation aims to provide a deeper understanding of the effects cultural diversity has on team processes and which consequences this can have on team effectiveness. The aim of the present study is to investigate the main negative and positive effects cultural diversity has on team processes. Existing researcher s views about this issue are shown and confronted. The main objective of this study is to investigate three group processes task conflict, cohesion and trust. Hypothesis will be developed concerning these three issues in order to test them in practice. [...]

Multicultural and multinational teams have become an important strategic and structural element of organizational work in our globalized world today. These teams are demonstrating their importance from the factory floors to the boardrooms of contemporary organizations. The emergence of multicultural teams is evident across a variety of organizations in the private, public, and civil society sectors. These developments have led to an increasing interest in the theory and practice of multicultural teams. Management educational and training programs are giving increasing attention to these developments. At the same time, there is emerging interest in research about and study of multicultural teams. This book emerged from our teaching, research, and consulting with multic- tural and diverse teams in multiple sectors over the last several years. In particular, we have developed and refined our ideas about the concepts in this book from teaching an advanced course called Effective Multicultural Teams in the Graduate Program at the School for International Training (SIT) in Vermont. We have learned from the rich background of students who are from, and have worked in, six con- nents, and who are, or plan to be, working in the public, educational, not-for-profit, and for-profit sectors. Additionally, we have engaged with a variety of teams through our consulting and training, providing consultation to teams in a variety of sectors and continents as they struggled to become more effective.

Thus, we have to pay extraordinary attention to intercultural teams with the help of team building. Do we? The following article will examine the definition of teams – what they are and what they are not, how they could differ and which differences need to be taken into account on multi-cultural team building processes. This paper is an approach to explore its fundamentals, practices and its reliability. In chapter one the fundamentals of teams, team dynamics and multicultural teams will be discussed in detail. The second chapter highlights the cross-cultural team stages, the team building process and its interventions to understand how to move from a multicultural to a cross-cultural team. Therefore, it will examine an overview of cross-cultural team building measures in its vast scope of team building providers in chapter two. Moreover, chapter three should discuss research and results on the effectiveness of team building measures and possibly necessary methods to maintain the effects of team building events. It will be discussed what has to be taken into account to create team building programs as well as advantages and disadvantages and results on the effectiveness of team building programs. As the terms cross-cultural, intercultural and multicultural are relevant to the understanding and not randomly utilised, this distinction has to be defined more precisely: multicultural can be understood as a team including several cultures. The term cross-cultural refers to an involving or bridging of differences between cultures that focuses on the process, like teambuilding does. In addition, intercultural means the consistence of or the involving or representing of different cultures in a team. Where the term cross-cultural refers to the interaction between individuals from different cultures the term multi-cultural refers more or less only to the cultural diversity. Based on this definition cross-cultural team building is used in multi-cultural teams to build intercultural teams.

Teams, whose members come from different nations and backgrounds place special demands on operations, diversity clearly adds complexity and a longer learning curve for establishing effective processes. In the multicultural team, obviously, culture itself is one significant characteristic, in addition the role of emotions in the team have gained increasing interest in the last years. Nevertheless, research in this field is scarce and through adding an additional variable – culture, the multicultural character is making research even more complicate. Practitioners report that where people work together, emotions are not far to seek. While influencing our thinking and behavior, the effects of emotions and the resulting behavior can either be positive, or negative. In multicultural teams an awareness of emotions seems to be especially important as cultural differences in emotion processing and diversity among members may cause negative emotion and lead to conflict and misunderstandings what may have serious consequences reducing performance. The aim of this paper is to identify challenges for multinational teams focusing on emotions within the team, and to propose emotional intelligence as an approach to multicultural team effectiveness. The two research questions guiding this work are: 1. What role do emotions play in the multicultural team? 2. Is emotional intelligence connected with multicultural team effectiveness?
