"The effects of being a child of an alcoholic (COA) have been widely researched; however, treating the heterogeneous population has proven to be a challenge. The environment produced by an alcoholic parent and the resulting treatment of children can lead to irreparable damage as an adult if left untreated. This project focused on a dual approach intervention by providing a psychoeducational based group with a Gestalt oriented environment for high school sophomores and juniors. The purpose of this project is to provide an effective intervention that widely treats the various issues that come with being a COA. A three-session workshop for school staff, "Children of Alcoholics in School," is described and the workshop goals are explained: to introduce staff to the feelings, needs, and characteristics of students in families where chemical abuse causes problems; to explore family disease and family roles in an addictive family; and to identify children who may be in alcoholic families and design an action plan to help them in the school setting.
