The Republic of Turkey was born on 29 October 1923 as the final outcome of a very troubled historical process. The Muslims of Anatolia and Eastern Thrace had faced the risk of disintegration and submission. The father and leader of the “new Turkey”, Mustafa Kemal, felt the plurality that had characterized the Ottoman world as a source of weakness and danger. In these nearly 100 years Republican Turkey has scored many admirable accomplishments, but her genesis left a permanent imprint in the political and social development of the country. Thus, the Turkish State has perpetuated a suspicious and repressive attitude towards the particular identities. The term Armenian Genocide is used by a large majority to describe the Ottoman's empire systematic killing of an estimated number of between 1 and 1.5 million Armenians, widely identified by scholars and governments as genocide. While Armenia's policy pursues the recognition of the genocide, the Turkish government follows a policy of denial. This dilemma is an obstacle not only to the resolution of this issue but to the normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations in general. Hence, using the lenses of social constructivism, this paper elaborates on the role of the Armenian Genocide in the modern Turkish and Armenian identities and policies. Further, interaction is outlined as a way to bridge the gap between the identities, de-freezing their strained relations. The hypothesis is that identity construction is central to the opposing policies of Turkey and Armenia as an abandonment of either policy would lead to an identity crisis for both of them. Thus, interaction between the civil societies is of key importance, modifying their respective identities and thereby affecting a change of their rigid policies. The structure of this paper is as follows. Firstly, the methodology applied is put forward which forms the theoretical framework of the analysis. To provide a background for this paper, the term 'genocide' is defined and applied to the events in 1915. The main part is formed by the analysis of the link of identity construction with the policy of denial of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey and the pressure for recognition of it by Armenia. The deep wounds that exist from long-standing conflicts between Turks, Kurds, and Armenians have not yet been sufficiently addressed and healed. Nermin Soyalp explains the collective traumas and their significant psychosocial impacts in terms of the potential for reconciliation among these politically conflicted groups. Discussion centres on the transgenerational implications of the Balkan wars of 1912-1913, the Armenian genocide of 1915-1917, the Greco-Turco war of 1920-1922, the formation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the population exchange with the Balkans in 1924, the conflict between the Turkish government and Kurdish identity since the formation of the Republic, as well as the impacts of assimilation policies on minorities. Drawing on the complexities of history, psychology, and identity, this book elucidates how collectively and historically shared traumas become inherently more complex, and more difficult to address, generation by generation. Epistemologies of ignorance in Turkey have suppressed the transgenerational experiences of trauma and prevented healing modalities. The Turkish state and society have consciously and unconsciously denied historical realities such as the Armenian genocide and Kurds ethnopolitical rights. The result is a collective dehumanization that fuels further trauma and conflicts. The collective traumas of Anatolia have impacted its society at multiple levels -- psychological, physical, economic, cultural, political, and institutional. The author, a dialogue facilitator for the non-profit Healing the Wounds of History organisation, proposes systemic healing modalities that address the dynamics at play. The research that underpins this work is highly relevant to the healing of other historical and cultural traumas.
