God’s power and saving hand is the only means to turn a fallen sinner from darkness to the Light of Christ. This was the basic and fundamental teaching about salvation that Jesus Christ taught. God demonstrates through the entire Bible that the only means by which men may be saved is through the regenerating power of the Spirit of God changing their heart, and making them a new creature in Christ, because of Christ, and for Christ’s glory. Simeon Ashe proves this from the text of John 6:44, “No man can come unto me except the Father which hath sent me draw him, and I will raise him up at the last day.” He covers six doctrines out of this text, stemming from a divine affection, “no man can come to me except the Father which has sent me draw him.” And a precious promise, “and I will raise him up at the last day.” He precisely confirms this by six important doctrines: that Christ as mediator between God and man was sent by the Father. That all men in their natural condition are absent and at a distance from Christ. That there is a necessity of man’s coming to Christ. That all those who come to Christ are drawn to him, for no man comes to Christ without being drawn. That the drawing of sinful souls to Christ is the peculiar work of God. He then demonstrates in a chapter on drawing sinners to Christ, how that drawing occurs through conviction and conversion, and shows that this one text alone demolishes the Arminian idea that man’s will is free to come to God at any time. Instead, following Christ’s words, he teaches that in the point of man’s free will and power, people come to Christ at God’s sovereign pleasure. Ashe teaches that not only is there solid, incontrovertible biblical evidence for a sinful man to be drawn to Christ by the efficient power of the Lord’s regenerating Spirit (Christ’s specific teaching on the matter), but that there are a host of biblical arguments which persuade gratitude from the Christian for such drawing. Thomas Hooker (1586-1647) was an English separatist Pilgrim who was a popular New England Reformed preacher and minister of the Gospel. William Ames spoke of him highly, saying he never met with Mr. Hooker’s equal, either for preaching or for disputing. Every Christian desires a full and unwavering assurance of salvation. It rests on a true conversion experience which is the work of God in a sinful soul brought to believe in Christ by the power of the Spirit (John 3:3). Without an initial spiritual birth into God’s covenant through the Holy Spirit there can never be a real assurance of faith, because assurance of salvation is directly connected to a genuine saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. True assurance is Christ-centered relying wholly on the Lord’s work and merit. Thomas Hooker looks to draw the Christian towards understanding that the foundation on which assurance for the believer must rest is the merits of Christ’s death and resurrection on their behalf. They must look to him. But how will they look to Christ when so many doubts and difficulties attack and weaken their faith? One of the greatest hindrances a Christian has walking with God comfortably, is their fickle nature. Christians have difficulty overcoming their fallen emotions. Hooker helps to overcome this by reasoning with the Christian through the word of God. He covers removing hindrances to coming to Christ, how the Christian is drawn to Christ using the word of God, what kind of interest the Christian should have in the promises of God, and how they might live by true biblical faith all the days of their life. Thomas Hooker's "Putting on Christ " is a wonderful treatise on not only being ingrafted into Christ Jesus, but also how one kills sin, and lives for righteousness. He uses two main texts, the first being, “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts." (Mal. 3:1). Here he shows how people are ingrafted into Jesus’ mystical body, attaining the Christian's intimate bond with Christ, emphasizing the necessity of embracing Him for both justification and sanctification. The second text is Romans 13:14, “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” Hooker argues that believers, regardless of their spiritual maturity, must continuously seek Christ's grace and power to fulfill divine commands and conquer personal failings. He employs the metaphor of clothing to illustrate the process of sanctification, suggesting that just as one dresses in garments, so must Christians clothe themselves in Christ to be prepared for godly duties and the day’s warfare against all the powers of darkness; day by day, step by step. The work explores the hazards of yielding to fleshly desires, presenting a clear directive for believers to abstain from creating opportunities for sin to thrive, and instead, taking off the old man and putting on Christ in the new man. The design of this work is to vindicate the glory of the blessed God in his all-ruling, wonder-working providence as sovereignly disposing the issues and events of all human counsels, and affairs. Christ, who is the Highest King and Lord of all, rules and reigns in his declarative glory “all things.” Nothing is left to itself, but God has a purpose in it. While we are too intent in gazing on the living creatures, and the dreadful wheels of Ezekiel, we soon lose the sight of him who sits above on the throne, overruling, and working all things according to the counsel of his own will. Oakes will point out this Sovereign in all his amiable glory. Beginning with a careful consideration of Ecclesiastes 9:11, Oakes explains how the successes and events of undertakings and affairs are not determined infallibly by the greatest sufficiency in men, or even in second causes; but by the counsel and providence of God ordering and governing time and chance according to his own good pleasure. God’s counsel and sovereign will appoints what they shall be, and his providence (which is not determined by any second cause, but is the determiner of them all) executes all things accordingly. Christ is such an inexhaustible fountain that sinners cannot ever out desire His mercies. He is an overflowing fountain of infinite mercy and comfort. All other temporal mercies find their eternal significance in him. Nothing will delight the sincere believer, or be enjoyed, if such believers do not in some way partake of His comfort, and His tenderness. They must tap into Christ’s virtue. How will they do this? Durant’s discourse explores the sweetness of Christ's relationship with weak believers, addressing various aspects of this theme. He shows the fallacy of Satan to keep souls from Christ; and the sweetness of Christ to those in His service. His work is taken from Isaiah 40:11, “He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.” The structure of the discourse includes the dependence of the words, their division, and the doctrines derived from them. His main doctrine, is that central teaching presented, emphasizes Christ's sweetness in His dealings with weak members. Most Christians will not admit they are weak. And the idea of the word “weak” seems to be negative. But Durant’s work reaches to all Christians. He shows that Christ's carriage, and the sweetness of that carriage, is demonstrated in not casting off weak believers, but that He preserves their weak graces, strengthens them, bears with their infirmities, not burdening them with tasks they can't handle, and accepts their efforts despite failings. These reasons are drawn from God the Father's commission to Christ, the truth of the inherent weakness in believers, and Christ's intention to build them up as his lambs. The discourse concludes with applications for information, lamentation, reproof, comfort, encouragement, imitation, and exhortation.
