Approximately 700,000 Federal employees have children under age 13; at least an equal number of Federal employees are estimated to have concerns about their elderly parents and relatives. This handbook was developed primarily to put government employees in touch with the many free resource organizations and agencies around the country that can help them meet their dependent care needs. It also provides practical tips on how to find quality child care, information about federal personnel programs that can help to balance work and family responsibilities, and places to call for further information on related topics, such as obtaining financial assistance. The handbook is divided into three parts: Child Care, Elder Care, and Work and Family Programs. Part I suggests practical steps to take in finding quality child care, including questions to ask during the initial telephone screening and a checklist of things to observe when visiting child care centers or homes. It also provides a directory of resource and referral services around the country, and a list of federal and national organizations that can help parents learn about quality child care. Part II explains a variety of community resources that are offered around the country to help older adults function independently, and discusses housing options, financial and medical considerations, nursing homes, and home health care agencies. It also provides a short summary of the services provided by federal and national organizations which can help employees meet their elder care needs. The last part provides information on the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM's) Work and Family Program Center and government-wide personnel flexibility; and on programs, policies, and leave options to help employees balance their work and family demands. An African proverb wisely asserts that "behind every accomplished man stand his ancestors, vigilantly watching over him." This adage beautifully illustrates the intricate tapestry of our existence, where the vibrant threads of love, family, and the profound art of caring for our elders serve as a testament to the generations preceding us. "Cura Senum: Elderly Care and Connection" embarks on a journey through these threads, offering a heartfelt tribute to the indomitable spirit of our grandparents and the invaluable lessons they have bestowed upon us. The importance of elderly care and connection cannot be overstated. Social connectedness emerges as a crucial factor in promoting positive health and social outcomes for older individuals. While social connectedness is celebrated as a positive alternative to the deficits model associated with loneliness and social isolation, there has been a scarcity of opportunities for older people to articulate their perspectives on this concept. The multi-levelled nature of social connectedness is emphasized, encompassing interpersonal relationships, community bonds, and broader societal connections. This book is an exploration of the multifaceted dimensions of elderly care, a poignant reflection on the intersection of wisdom and compassion.

The management of Alzheimer's Disease and the related dementias is one of the major challenges to health care professionals and American society-at-large for the coming decade and the coming millennium. The rapid growth of the over-eighty-five population, the group which, as recent studies have confirmed and as many of us clinicians have long suspected, has an even higher prevalence than previously quoted of dementing disorders, is the major cause of this. We are thus challenged by, as Bernard Issacs used to call it, "the survival of the unfittest," as well as the oPtimistic approach of "bringing life to years," as John F. Kennedy said. The fact is that we, as a society, tend to confuse "treatment" and "cure" (and "prevention"). As the proceedings of the conference which this book represents emphasize, there is considerable work going on about the potential prevention of, or at least the reduction of, symptomatology in these illnesses by interventions genetically, chemIcally, and so forth. However, the more we find out, the more complicated it becomes, and the more heterogeneous Alzheimer's and the related disorders appear to be, not only in their manifestations (as clinicians have long recognized) but also in the individual initiating and underlying processes. For these reasons, absolute preventive techniques or the likelihood of an intervention which will reverse the process in a high proportion of patients, do not appear to be just around the corner.
