This report reviews progress since 2009 on the recommendations of the Select Committee on Reform of the House of Commons - known as the Wright Committee after its Chair, Dr Tony Wright - and looks forward. It concludes that: Commons select committees are more effective, and election of select committee chairs and members by MPs in a secret ballot, instead of being appointed by the whips, as recommended by Wright, have brought greater transparency and democracy; the Backbench Business Committee, another suggestion of Wright, has been a success, giving backbenchers the chance to decide the subjects of debates covering about a quarter of the House's time; another key Wright recommendation - a House Business Committee which would give backbenchers an influence on the rest of the House's agenda - can be and should be introduced without delay. The Coalition Agreement said in 2010 that the Committee would be established by the third year of this Parliament; the House's petitions procedure is failing to meet public expectations. There is too much confusion between the roles of Government and Parliament. The Committee argues that there is still a case for the establishment of a petitions committee and recommends that officials work up a detailed and costed proposition which could then be put to the House for its endorsement

George E. Saurman looks back at a life filled with adventure, beginning with his birth in Houston in 1926 and through his twilight years at a Pennsylvania retirement community. Within a year of being born, his family moved to Baltimore before finding a permanent home in Pennsylvania, but it wasnt long before they were immersed in the Great Depression. With Saurmans father out of work, his mother supported the family as a hairdresser. Saurman recalls being mentored by his grandfather, who taught the importance of living life according to the Ten Commandments and the Book of Proverbs. He also shares what it was like growing up as a boy in the 1930s and early 1940s. With the arrival of World War II, he joined the Army and eventually went to basic infantry training. He served in the infantry for the duration of the war. Hed have the great fortune to meet his future wife, Mary Elizabeth Ewen, at Ursinus College. They enjoyed a sixty-two year marriage and raised a wonderful family, and she supported him throughout his career as a businessman, borough councilman, as mayor of Ambler, and during his fourteen years as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

An epoch-marking alliance of laborers, students, dissident intellectuals, and ordinary citizens was at the heart of South Korea’s transformation from a dictatorship into a vibrant democracy during the 1980s. Collectively known as the minjung (“the people”), these agents of Korean democratization historically carved out an expanded role for civil society in the country’s politics. In Revisiting Minjung, some of the foremost experts in 1980s Korean history, literature, film, art, and music provide new insights into one of the most crucial decades in South Korean history. Drawing from the theoretical perspectives of transnationalism, post-Marxist studies, intersectional feminism, popular culture studies, and more, the volume demonstrates how an era that is often associated with radical politics was, in effect, the catalyst for the subsequent flourishing of democratic and liberal values in South Korea.
