In this book the author summarizes the present state of knowledge of those physical and chemical properties of glasses that are important as regards their application and manufacture. The nature of these applications is briefly described. The introductory chapter deals with the nature and chemical composition of inorganic glasses, covering such topics as structure, devitrification and phase separation. The main part of the book comprises a group of chapters describing the important physical properties: viscosity, thermal expansion, mechanical strength, refractive index and dispersion, absorption of radiation and electrical properties. The final chapter deals with chemical durability. Most chapters deal briefly with methods of measurement of the property concerned and with the effects of glass composition, temperature, heat treatment, etc. Wherever appropriate, the scientific principles relevant to particular applications are discussed. Sufficient references to the literature are given to enable the reader to follow up in more detail the various topics discussed.

The theory of metallic conduction has, until recently, been confined to crystalline metals with atoms in regular arrays. The discovery of solid amorphous alloys led to an explosion of measurements of their electronic properties, and the emergence of a range of interesting low temperature phenomena. The book describes in physical terms the theory of the electrical conductivity, Hall coefficient, magnetoresistance and thermopower of disordered metals and alloys. The author begins by showing how conventional Boltzmann theory can be extended and modified when the mean free path of the conduction electrons becomes comparable with their wavelength and interionic separation. Dugdale explores the consequences of this and tests the theory by applying it to experimental data on metallic glasses. Designed as a self-contained review, the book will appeal to nonspecialist physicists, metallurgists and chemists with an interest in disordered metals.

When it was learned that Professor Scholze was revising his classic work on the nature, structure, and properties of glass, it was natural to conceive the idea of translating the new edition into English. Professor Scholze enthusiastically endorsed this suggestion and asked for the concurrence of his publisher, Springer-Verlag. Springer-Verlag welcomed the idea and readily agreed to provide support. With the essential agreements in place, Professor Michael Lakin, Professor of German at Alfred University, was asked to do the transla tion, and I subsequently agreed to work with Professor Lakin to check for technical accuracy. I was happy to accept this task because of my respect for Professor Scholze and because of the value to glass scientists and engineers of having available an English edition of Glas. Professor Scholze died before publication ofthis English edition of his work. However, he had reviewed the entire English text and had approved it. Professor Lakin and I appreciated the confidence he placed in us, and we were gratified with his acceptance of our efforts. His scientific contributions were numerous and important; they will long serve as guideposts for research in many key areas. We hope this translation of Glas will help make his legacy accessible to more people. Professor Lakin and I have tried to provide a translation that is accurate and true to the original but that has a distinctive English "flavor"; that is, it is not just a literal translation.
