Do you know what suffering has to do with violence? Or the meaning of mushin, zanshin and mushotoku? Is your idea of Buddhism rather vague, or have you understood its basic concept: dependent origination? Then, maybe, you might like to have a look at this book. The goal of this book is to reveal in a practical way the teachings of Zen Buddhism for practitioners of martial arts, for ambitious athletes of other sports and for anyone affected by conflicts in general. Therefore, the elements which prepare the way to prowess will be elucidated. The history of Japan through many decades was a story of permanent struggle between rivalling lords, culminating in a hundred years of civil war. A special caste of warriors, the samurai, evolved in these times. During the perpetual chaos of war their abilities sharpened. As prowess in martial arts was crucial for survival, the effective skills were separated from the ineffective. The samurai found spiritual assistance in the teachings of Zen Buddhism. Zen provided them with a distinctive approach towards their life situation and towards martial arts. Hence they learned to imperturbably face death, and on the other hand to wield their weapons with excelling precision. In our times bud - the way of the martial arts - is the legacy of the samurai. In bud, striving for skill in practice and fight combines with spiritual influences from Zen Buddhism. Zen, through its special mind-set, sustainably supports that striving.Incidentally, this book also offers unpretentious, pragmatic explanations to basic concepts of Buddhism. Finally, martial arts as such shall be questioned in this context.Hagen Seibert practices Aikid (4th Dan) since 1988, also Iaid (3rd Dan), JuJitsu, Kenjutsu and started in 1992 with Zen. He is a trainer since 1993 and presently teaches in Freiburg, Germany.

After Gautama Buddha conducted his preaching around the fifth century B.C.E., numerous philosophies, religious practices and precepts derived from his teaching were accumulated over time, in addition to various collections of his discourses. The Buddha's message became increasingly standardized and ritualized, and covered with a multiplicity of concepts. A current of Buddhism that developed in China around the 6th century CE, and which took the name Ch'an, succeeded in ridding Buddhism of all the superstructures that had tarnished its original meaning. Ch'an, later spreading to Japan as well, took the name Zen; but it is in its early Chinese development that we must look for the elements of Zen's originality and extraordinary depth. Zen teaches us to see the world, and ourselves, without the mediation of concepts and emotional filters. It brings us to know our true nature, beyond the psychological characteristics and personal history with which we usually identify. The behavior and words of the ancient Zen masters often appear enigmatic and provocative. But the purpose of the masters was not to display cunning and extravagance, but to guide people out of the narrows of the mind and into the open space of freedom. If in the words of the ancient Zen masters we can sense the signs of genuine adherence to reality, we recognize that those words were spoken for us, and that they were spoken by us.

Zen Sand is a classic collection of verses aimed at aiding practitioners of kôan meditation to negotiate the difficult relationship between insight and language. As such it represents a major contribution to both Western Zen practice and English-language Zen scholarship. In Japan the traditional Rinzai Zen kôan curriculum includes the use of jakugo, or "capping phrases." Once a monk has successfully replied to a kôan, the Zen master orders the search for a classical verse to express the monk’s insight into the kôan. Special collections of these jakugo were compiled as handbooks to aid in that search. Until now, Zen students in the West, lacking this important resource, have been severely limited in carrying out this practice. Zen Sand combines and translates two standard jakugo handbooks and opens the way for incorporating this important tradition fully into Western Zen practice. For the scholar, Zen Sand provides a detailed description of the jakugo practice and its place in the overall kôan curriculum, as well as a brief history of the Zen phrase book. This volume also contributes to the understanding of East Asian culture in a broader sense.

Opening A Mountain written by Steven Heine and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-02-26 with Religion categories.

With the growing popularity of Zen Buddhism in the West, virtually everyone knows, or thinks they know, what a koan is: a brief and baffling question or statement that cannot be solved by the logical mind and which, after sustained concentration, can lead to sudden enlightenment. But the truth about koans is both simpler--and more complicated--than this. In Opening a Mountain, Steven Heine shows that koans, and the questions we associate with them--such as "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"--are embedded in larger narratives and belong to an ancient Buddhist tradition of "encounter dialogues." These dialogues feature dramatic and often inscrutable contests between masters and disciples, or between masters and an array of natural and supernatural forces: rouge priests, "wild foxes," hermits, wizards, shapeshifters, magical animals, and dangerous women. To establish a new monastery, "to open a mountain," the Zen master had to tame these wild forces in regions most remote from civilization. In these extraordinary encounters, fingers and arms are cut off, pitchers are kicked over, masters appear in and interpret each other's dreams, and seemingly absurd statements are shown to reveal the deepest insights. Heine restores these koans to their original traditions, allowing readers to see both the complex elements of Chinese culture and religion that they reflect and the role they played in Zen's transformation of local superstitions into its own teachings. Offering a fresh approach to one of the most crucial elements of Zen Buddhism, Opening a Mountain is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the full story behind koans and the mysterious worlds they come from.
