Human beings are primates, and primates are political animals. Our brains, therefore, are designed not just to hunt and gather, but also to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus we don't like to talk or even think about the extent of our selfishness. This is "the elephant in the brain." Such an introspective taboo makes it hard for us to think clearly about our nature and the explanations for our behavior. The aim of this book, then, is to confront our hidden motives directly - to track down the darker, unexamined corners of our psyches and blast them with floodlights. Then, once everything is clearly visible, we can work to better understand ourselves: Why do we laugh? Why are artists sexy? Why do we brag about travel? Why do we prefer to speak rather than listen? Our unconscious motives drive more than just our private behavior; they also infect our venerated social institutions such as Art, School, Charity, Medicine, Politics, and Religion. In fact, these institutions are in many ways designed to accommodate our hidden motives, to serve covert agendas alongside their "official" ones. The existence of big hidden motives can upend the usual political debates, leading one to question the legitimacy of these social institutions, and of standard policies designed to favor or discourage them. You won't see yourself - or the world - the same after confronting the elephant in the brain.

Buy now to get the main key ideas from Kevin Simler & Robin Hanson’s The Elephant in the Brain We, the human species, not only act on hidden motives, but we’re naturally designed to do so. Our brains are programmed to act in our own interest, even while we are trying hard not to be selfish. That’s why our brain often keeps our conscious mind in the dark. The more we ignore our ugly, hidden motives, the easier it is for us to keep them hidden from others, too. Self-deception is a strategic ploy that our brain adopts to disguise our bad behavior, and the key to change is understanding it. In The Elephant in the Brain (2017), writer Kevin Simler and professor Robin Hanson uncover the hidden motives behind our main social behaviors and shed light on unexamined aspects of public life: respected social institutions in which nearly all participants are strategically self-interested, self-deceived, and driven by social signaling.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Humans are not the only species that have complex social lives. Many other animals do as well, and it can be difficult to understand their motives. However, humans do not necessarily hide their motives like other animals do. #2 Social grooming is the act of one primate grooming another. It’s been proven to be more about politics than hygiene, as primates spend more time grooming each other than they do grooming themselves. #3 The political function of grooming explains why higher-ranking individuals receive more grooming than lower-ranking individuals. It also explains why primates groom each other, even though they don’t need to be conscious of their political motivations. #4 The Arabian babbler is a small bird that lives in the arid brush of the Sinai Desert and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. The males arrange themselves into rigid dominance hierarchies. The alpha male consistently wins in small squabbles with the beta male, who in turn consistently wins against the gamma male.

Elephants In Space written by Ben Moore and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-30 with Science categories.

This book is about the history and future of life and the universe, written at a level that any educated lay-person can understand and enjoy. It describes our place in time and space, how we got here and where we are going. It will take you on a journey from the beginning of time to the end of the universe to uncover our origins and reveal our destiny. It will explain how mankind acquired this knowledge starting from the beginning of civilization when the ancient Greeks first began to ask questions about the nature of the world around them. Ben Moore takes us on a path of discovery that connects astrophysics with subjects as varied as biology, neuroscience and evolution; from the origin of atoms to how stars shine and die, from ants and elephants to space travel and extra-terrestrial life. But as our universe grows older and its stars fade away and stop shining, can life continue for eternity or is all life destined for complete extinction? And what is the purpose of all of this anyway?! On the German edition: "With his public talks and his new book "Elefanten im All" the Brit is on his way of becoming a popstar of science. Moore has a story to tell. The story of everything. From the beginning to the end of our existence. And he does so with esprit and catching passion." Rico Bandle, Weltwoche, 1. November 2012 “The kind of book you come across only every few years.” Artur K. Vogel, Der Bund, September 2012.

A church can be a dangerous place. The perils may be so obvious, they become "elephants" standing in the fellowship hall, lurking in the sanctuary, ready to spring into the pastor's study, and tromp out of the choir room. The word "elephant" stands for an obvious truth or issue that is ignored or unnamed--a blind spot. Yet we allow elephants to occupy a large amount of space in the minds and hearts of those that tiptoe around them. Discussing common blind-spots of congregations and church leaders, the authors provide examples and illustrations for how to stop these "elephants" from ruining a ministry.
