The book studies the relationship between economic agglomeration and environmental pollution from a spatial perspective through theoretical analyses and empirical discussions. At both microscopic and macroscopic levels, the author first explores the impact mechanism of the agglomeration of economic activities on environmental pollution and proposes research frameworks based on spatial economic theory and output density theory. Drawing on descriptive statistics and explorative spatial data from 283 cities in China, the book investigates the current development, spatial characteristics, influence path, and environmental efficiency of urban economic agglomeration and pollution in the People’s Republic. The following empirical sections study spatial spillover effects, simultaneous bias and spatial interaction between agglomeration and pollution. The research findings give insight into interregional economic development, joint pollution control across regions, and the coordination of the two, especially in the context of developing countries. The title will appeal to researchers, students, government officials and policymakers interested in development economics, regional economics, urban economics, and environmental economics.

Recently, the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) has increasingly been recognized as crucial for economic prosperity, human development, and well-being, along with sustainable development. World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum emphasizes the role of ICT adoption in sustainability, with due regard to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The research has largely documented favorable economic outcomes of increasing the use of ICT. However, the ecological dimensions of ICT have received the least attention in the literature. In effect, ICT has influenced human life from many perspectives including ecological aspects of life. The links of ICT with the environment are rather complex. On the one hand, ICT growth deteriorates the environment by increasing the production, use, and disposal of ICT products. For instance, increasing e-waste and larger use of energy in manufacturing cause adverse effects on the environment. The life cycle theory of ICT suggests that several stages of the life of ICT result in pollution. The life cycle of ICT-related products spans over “production, delivery, transport, use, and disposal”. On the other hand, ICT is considered a solution to reinforce environmental protection, mitigate the adverse impacts created in the environment by human activities, and address key environmental challenges such as climate change and sustainability.

China’s national carbon market, the world’s largest emissions trading scheme (ETS), kicked off its first online trade recently. This can be called a milestone for the country towards the nation’s goals of having CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. China’s national ETS initially covers the power sector, before being expanded to a much broader set of energy-intensive industries. On one hand, the electricity sector, the largest carbon-emitting industry, is responsible for about 40% of China’s emissions, and it has great significance to response to global climate change. On the other hand, the effectiveness of China’s ETS will rest on how well it is coordinated with power market regulations and policies. In this regard, the deepening of reform, as well as the advanced technology and its applications in the electricity market will add new challenges and opportunities to electricity trade, which, in turn, influences national ETS. Therefore, this brings urgency to accurately capture the dynamic interactions between national ETS and electricity market to transform carbon trading into a practical and effective way to decarbonize the power sector.

This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volume can be found here: Energy, Economy, and Climate Interactions: Challenges and Opportunities Climate change is one of the biggest risks to global development, and it poses a severe threat to the economic and social development of all countries, which has originated largely from the greenhouse gas emissions related to energy use. This, coupled with the worldwide economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and global energy supply shortage resulting from international instability, highlights the necessity and urgency of the collaborative promotion of addressing climate change, energy security, and economic growth issues. Green and low-carbon transformation of global energy is the key to mitigating climate change, guaranteeing energy security, and promoting economic recovery. This Research Topic aims to address advances in systematic studies on climate, energy, and socio-economic development issues based on theories and methods of multiple disciplines including Economics, Management Science, Natural Science, and Engineering Technology. Authors are encouraged to adopt self-developed or mature models such as integrated assessment models, energy optimization models, input-output models, air quality models, or climate models. We are particularly interested in applied studies that provide insightful information to facilitate reducing pollution and carbon emission actions related to energy utilization and other behavior changes to mitigate and adapt to climate change, preserve the ecological environment, and promote sustainable socio-economic development.

The built environment is at a turning point. With projected trends in population growth and urbanization, global demand for new floor area is expected to rise sharply. This will put unprecedented pressure on the availability of natural resources and incur greenhouse gas emissions and energy demand. Such environmental stressors risk driving the world away from the UN Sustainable Development Goals, but equally represent an opportunity for just sustainability transitions. The contents of this book aim to address some of these grand challenges from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Low-energy architecture, low-carbon cities and the often-forgotten sustainability of refugee settlements are some of the themes dealt with by the authors.

Building on the Millennium Development Goals, the UN Sustainable Development Goals are the cornerstone of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, billed by the UN as “An Agenda of unprecedented scope and significance.” The seventeen ambitious goals, which are intended to be reached by 2030, are conceived as integrated, indivisible, and as balancing the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. They are organized around five core pillars: ● People: ending poverty and hunger and ensuring that all human beings can lead fulfilling lives in a healthy and dignified environment. ● Planet: protecting the environment while ensuring sustainable use and management of natural resources. ● Prosperity: ensuring environmentally sustainable economic growth, mutual prosperity, and decent work for all. ● Peace: building societies that are peaceful, just, and inclusive, and in which human rights and gender equality are respected. ● Partnership: strengthening global solidarity to address inequalities within and between countries, by focusing on the needs of the most vulnerable. * This Research Topic addresses the ninth Sustainable Development Goal, which is to “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.” Progress toward this goal is measured by a number of individual targets and indicators. As highlighted in the UN’s most recent SDG progress report, the manufacturing sector, which had already seen the slowest year-on-year growth rate since 2012, was hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to a global drop in manufacturing production of 8.4 per cent in 2020. Alongside job losses and declining income for workers, the pandemic has significantly disrupted global supply chains and severely affected small-scale industries. Less technology-intensive industries have also taken longer to recover than medium and high-technology industries, such as the pharmaceutical, computer, electronics and automotive sectors. The UN nonetheless notes that the crisis offers the opportunity to foster industrialization and improve the global distribution of groundbreaking technologies. In emerging from the pandemic, it highlights key areas of focus, including continuing to expand mobile broadband networks, increasing R&D investment, and improving rural road connectivity. * This Research Topic will address the ninth Sustainable Development Goal from a sociological-specific perspective. Given the global setbacks to the industrial and transport sectors resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s edition of the Research Topic will focus particularly on the challenges and complexities of industrial development in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. This Research Topic welcomes papers that will provide both theoretical and empirical findings. Potential issues include, but are not limited to: • Social and cultural aspects of technology transfer and global diffusion of groundbreaking technologies. • Supply chains and the global economy: threats and opportunities for specific sectors. • Redesign of the transport systems, including travel, trade, logistics, and freight distribution. • Multi-level, cross-sectoral, and multi-sectoral cooperation of various stakeholders, including public, private, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and non-formal entities. • Regional and local bottom-up responses, their scalability, feedbacks from environmental change, degrowth, and community resilience. • The advances in the access to digital infrastructures as well as information and communications technologies (ICTs). • The new ideas and approaches relevant for the fields of technological policy, industrial policy, and innovative policy. • National and international industrial policies and innovation policies in response to global health challenges. • Planning, management, governance, and evaluation of governmental interventions including, for example, economic policy, agricultural and food policy, industrial policy, technology policy, and innovative policy. • Industrialization, resilient infrastructure, innovation, and research and development investments in the law and public policies related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
