Employer involvement is a crucial element in the success of school-to-work initiatives. To reach out to employers, states can do the following: target key employers and industries; foster employer ownership; give employers opportunities to recruit their peers; create or collaborate with intermediary organizations; establish partnerships with labor organizations; publicize the school-to-work concept; and provide "how-to" information to employers. Despite employer interest in participating in school-to-work programs, some barriers may impede their involvement: the costs of participation, challenges in developing working relationships with schools, child labor restrictions, liability concerns, and workers' compensation requirements. By working with employers to address these barriers, states can demonstrate their commitment to making the school-to-work system responsive to employer concerns. Governors can take the following actions: target key industries likely to employ tomorrow's work force and suggest school-to-work transition as a strategy; set school-to-work initiatives as a high priority for the state's economic development system and education systems; encourage statewide business groups to play a role; publicize school-to-work efforts of leading employers; and initiate a review of state laws, regulations, and practices that pose barriers to employer participation. The signs of discontent are all there, yet they are ignored. Workplaces are suffering from unnecessary turnover, unfilled positions, lost customers, overworked staff, and compromised profit. Taking the guesswork out of engagement and retention, EmployER Engagement is the fresh and dissenting voice on the employment relationship. You’ve heard it too many times: “I’ve got to update my résumé.” “I can’t work for that jerk anymore.” “I’m sick of having that carrot dangling in my face.” “This is a dead-end job; I’m out.” It happens every day. The signs of discontent are all there, yet they are ignored. Workplaces are suffering from unnecessary turnover, unfilled positions, lost customers, overworked staff, and compromised profit. Employee morale is flat, clever but empty perks continue to fail, and everyone knows that employee engagement scores are a joke. Poaching is the new best practice, and employees are bailing. Like it or not, employees have control in this high-stakes, employee-in-control market. And this employee market will continue for some time. It’s simple demographic science. US workers will hold the hammer for years to come. Here’s the deal, employer: There are plenty of people to do all the work that needs to be done; they’re just working somewhere else. Employees don’t need you; you need them. So how can you recruit the best employees and keep them working for you? The answer is clear: companies CAN and MUST become better employers. Taking the guesswork out of engagement and retention, EmployER Engagement is the fresh and dissenting voice on the employment relationship.

Aging Workers And The Employee Employer Relationship written by P. Matthijs Bal and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-23 with Business & Economics categories.

This book focuses on the aging workforce from the employment relationship perspective. This innovative book specifically focuses on how organizations can ensure their aging workers remain motivated, productive and healthy. In 15 chapters, several experts on this topic describe how organizations through effective human resource management can ensure that workers are able to continue working at higher age. In addition, this book discusses the role older workers themselves play in continuing work at higher age. To do this, the authors integrate research from different areas, such as literature on leadership, psychological contracts and diversity with literature on the aging workforce. Through this integration this book provides innovative ways for organizations and workers to maintain productivity, motivation and health. Aging Workers and the Employee-Employer Relationship summarizes the latest research on how employment relationships change with age and its implications for supporting the well-being, motivation and productivity of older workers. It identifies ways to improve how both companies and workers solve the problems they face. These include better designed employment practices and more adaptive job content and developmental opportunities for aging workers along with activities aging workers can engage to enhance their own job crafting, learning and employability.
