"Adah Isaacs Menken, also known as Ada Bertha Théodore and Ada C. McCord (June 15, 1835? August 10, 1868), was an American actress, painter and poet, the highest earning actress of her time.[1] She was best known for her performance in the melodrama Mazeppa, with a climax that featured her apparently nude and riding a horse on stage. After great success for a few years with the play in New York and San Francisco, she appeared in a production in London and Paris, from 1864 to 1866. She was so well known internationally at the time that she was called "the Menken". After a brief trip back to the United States, she returned to Europe. She became ill within two years and died in Paris at age 33"--Wikipedia.

I came here to be a companion. I never meant to be a rebel—or to fall in love with one. Calix Callisto would never have been my first choice for a mate. Despite his looks, he’s young, impetuous, and a little bit superficial. We should never have gotten along. A gymnast back on Earth, I’m everything he’s not—intensely disciplined, coolheaded, and a problem-solver. As it turns out, though, we balanced each other out. We even became…friends. Friends with benefits, no less. And then Ixion devolved into rebellion, and we had to make a run for it. Now I’m no longer bound to him by any program—just the need to help each other survive. And we’re good at that. We’re good at everything together. I want to keep it that way, too—which means no falling in love. Nothing that could eventually break apart our friendship when we realize that this won’t work permanently—and was never meant to, in the first place. There’s danger coming at us from all sides, and we don’t need distractions. Not when Calix is a whole distraction himself. And me? I never wanted to fall in love anyway. Not on Earth, and not on Ixion. Not anywhere. Until we’re separated, and I learn a terrible truth— Sometimes you don’t know what you want until you’ve lost it. Maybe forever. An Irish Rebel In New Spain written by Andrea Martínez Baracs and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-19 with History categories.

An Irish Rebel in New Spain recounts the story of the so-called Irish Zorro, who, in 1659, was burned at the stake for conspiring against the empire to make himself king of Mexico, restore the privileges of the Indigenous people, end the persecution of the Jews, and free the African slaves. William Lamport was an Irish rebel, a soldier, a poet, and a thinker. His Catholic family lost their land and their religious freedom after the English conquest of Ireland. In 1640, Lamport emigrated to New Spain, where he witnessed the abuses of the colonial system and later ran afoul of the Mexican Inquisition. Imprisoned in 1642, Lamport argued his own defense as well as that of the Jews who were in prison with him. Along with a concise biography, this volume provides an anthology of Lamport’s most representative writings: his detailed project for a Spanish-supported Irish insurrection; a manifesto and plan for a Mexican uprising against Spain; his self-defense, which he nailed to the doors of the cathedral when he managed to momentarily escape from prison; a selection of his poetry; and the court documents about the accusation that led him to the pyre. This concise, compelling, and original reflection on the systems of (in)justice in seventeenth-century Mexico is designed for classes on early modern Spain, colonial Latin America, and the Inquisition. Those with an affinity for Irish history will also enjoy learning about the colorful life of William Lamport.

Rural Revolt In Mexico written by Daniel Nugent and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-06-12 with History categories.

Rural Revolt in Mexico is a historical investigation of how subaltern political activity engages imperialism, capitalism, and the United States. In this volume, Daniel Nugent has gathered a group of leading scholars whose work examines the relationship of revolts by peasants and Indians in Mexico to the past century of U.S. intervention—from the rural rebellions of the 1840s through the 1910 revolution to the 1994 uprising in Chiapas. Through their studies of social movements and popular mobilization in the Mexican countryside, the contributors argue for understanding rural revolts in terms of the specific historical contexts of particular regions and peoples, as well as the broader context of unequal cultural, political, and economic relations between Mexico and the United States. Exploring the connections between external and internal factors in social movements, these essays reveal the wide range of organized efforts through which peasants and Indians have struggled to shape their own destiny while confronted by the influence of U.S. capital and military might. Originally published as a limited edition in 1988 by the Center for U. S.–Mexican Studies, this volume presents a pioneering effort by Latin Americanist scholars to sympathetically embrace and enrich work begun in Subaltern Studies between 1982 and 1987 by projecting it onto a different region of historical experience. This revised and expanded edition includes a new introduction by Daniel Nugent and an extensive essay by Adolfo Gilly on the recent Chiapas uprising.
