This book explores, through a series of essays, a set of interrelated elements that define the literary culture of China in the late eighth and early ninth centuries. This period, known as the Mid-Tang, broke with many of the intellectual habits of the "middle period" of Chinese culture and adumbrated many of the characteristics of China in the Song and later periods. The first essay examines "singularity," representations of identity as an assertion of superiority over others and as an alienation that brings rejection by others. The second essay addresses different ways of representing landscapes, showing the ways in which the underlying order of nature had become a problem in the Mid-Tang. The third essay discusses the tendency to offer hypothetical explanations for phenomena that either run contrary to received wisdom or try to account for situations usually thought not to require explanation. When carried out at the level of pure play, such subjective acts of interpretation are wit, and the fourth essay analyzes playfully inflated interpretations of domestic spaces and leisure activities as a discourse of private valuation, articulated against commonsense values.

In contrast to the economic and cultural dominance by the south and the east coast over the past several centuries, influence in China in the early Middle Ages was centered in the north and featured a significantly multicultural society. Many events that were profoundly formative for the future of East Asian civilization occurred during this period, although much of this multiculturalism has long been obscured due to the Confucian monopoly of written records. Multicultural China in the Early Middle Ages endeavors to expose a number of long-hidden non-Sinitic characteristics and manifestations of heritage, some lasting to this very day. Sanping Chen investigates several foundational aspects of Chinese culture during this period, including the legendary unicorn and the fabled heroine Mulan, to determine the origin and development of the lore. His meticulous research yields surprising results. For instance, he finds that the character Mulan is not of Chinese origin and that Central Asian influences are to be found in language, religion, governance, and other fundamental characteristics of Chinese culture. As Victor Mair writes in the Foreword, "While not everyone will acquiesce in the entirety of Dr. Chen's findings, no reputable scholar can afford to ignore them with impunity." These "foreign"-origin elements were largely the legacy of the Tuoba, whose descendants in fact dominated China's political and cultural stage for nearly a millennium. Long before the Mongols, the Tuoba set a precedent for "using the civilized to rule the civilized" by attracting a large number of sedentary Central Asians to East Asia. This not only added a strong pre-Islamic Iranian layer to the contemporary Sinitic culture but also commenced China's golden age under the cosmopolitan Tang dynasty, whose nominally "Chinese" ruling house is revealed by Chen to be the biological and cultural heir of the Tuoba.

A satisfactory comprehensive history of the social and economic development of pre-modern China, the largest country in the world in terms of population, and with a documentary record covering three millennia, is still far from possible. The present work is only an attempt to disengage the major themes that seem to be of relevance to our understanding of China today. In particular, this volume studies three questions. Why did the Chinese Empire stay together when the Roman Empire, and every other empire of antiquity of the middle ages, ultimately collapsed? What were the causes of the medieval revolution which made the Chinese economy after about 1100 the most advanced in the world? And why did China after about 1350 fail to maintain her earlier pace of technological advance while still, in many respects, advancing economically? After the fall of the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty, China came under the rule of the Ming dynasty, officially known as the Great Ming, from 1368 to 1644. This period marked the culmination of Han Chinese rule in imperial China. Despite the initial rebellion led by Li Zicheng, resulting in the formation of the short-lived Shun dynasty, followed swiftly by the rise of the Manchu-led Qing dynasty, remnants of the Ming royal family persisted in various southern regions, collectively known as the Southern Ming, until 1662. Under the reign of the Hongwu Emperor, who ruled from 1368 to 1398, efforts were made to establish self-sufficient rural communities structured within a rigid societal framework. This system aimed to maintain a permanent class of soldiers loyal to the Ming dynasty. The military strength of the empire flourished, boasting a standing army of over one million troops, while the navy's shipyards in Nanjing became renowned as the largest in the world. Furthermore, the Hongwu Emperor endeavored to weaken the influence of court eunuchs and other powerful figures by dispersing his numerous sons across the realm and imparting guidance through the Huang-Ming Zuxun, a compilation of dynastic instructions. However, his plans faced setbacks when his successor, the Jianwen Emperor, sought to curb the authority of his uncles. This led to the Jingnan campaign, a rebellion that brought the Yongle Emperor, Prince of Yan, to power in 1402.
