Excerpt from The Twentieth Century Theatre: Observations on the Contemporary English and American Stage This little book contains a discussion, with sufficient corroborative figures and specific illustrations, of some of the conditions and tendencies of the English and American stage of 1900-1918. The Modern Drama is so much greater than the Modern Theatre that we are confronted with a huge problem. We are living in the best period of play-writing since the age of Shakespeare; but how shall Americans outside of New York have an opportunity to see these new and original dramas? How can the modern theatre become a part of our national life? I have answered these two questions, but I wish I knew exactly how to bring the remedy to the patient, or to make the patient want it seriously enough to insist on having it. Some pages of the first, second, and fifth chapters, here revised, originally appeared respectively in the Yale Review, October 1911, Old Penn, April 1916, and The Art World, December 1916. Through the flash points of its glorious history, Richard Eyre and Nicholas Wright, two of today's most distinguished men of the theatre, celebrate the British and American stage as it has evolved over the course of the twentieth century. From "Pygmalion's first Eliza Doolittle (Mrs. Patrick Campbell, who enchanted playwright George Bernard Shaw in 1914) and her equally piquant successors, to Uta Hagen in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; from Gertrude Lawrence and Noel Coward in his "Private Lives (their performance as dazzling as the play itself), to Michael Frayn's "Copenhagen--this stylish, astute, richly pictorial volume brings us the actors, directors, and playwrights who have shaped one hundred years of the theatre and the performances that live on in our minds . Lotte Lenya in "The Threepenny Opera, Laurence Olivier in the British production of Eugene O'Neill's viscerally American "Long Day's Journey into Night, Sidney Poitier in "A Raisin in the Sun, Judi Dench as Lady Macbeth, Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman, Tom Stoppard's "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead . . . Here is the essential mixture of Shakespearean heritage, Irish magic, American vitality, and Russian pathos that converged on the stage in an efflorescence of dramatic innovation. Eyre and Wright's survey of this brilliant period is allusive, intelligent, and intimate, rich in anecdote and infused with a deep love and understanding of the theatre.

The seven plays to date of Yasmina Reza, one of France's most prominent female playwrights, are popular both in France and abroad. Despite her commercial success, her plays have often been ignored in academic circles, and few scholars have attempted to explore the mechanics of her playwriting. This text seeks to unpack the essentials of Reza's style and to explore each play as a component of Reza's theatrical oeuvre. The result is a fuller understanding of her theatrical poetics and her development as an artist.

This is the biography of Thomas Abthorpe Cooper, the first star of the American stage. Cooper was the chief transitional figure between the British and American stage and contributed greatly to the development of American theatre. For the 30 years after 1797, Cooper performed in the major cities and toured to every state in the Union. This work covers his entire life and career from his birth outside London in 1775, to his famed performance to celebrate the opening of the City of Washington in 1800, to his death in Bristol, Pennsylvania, in 1849. Much research is drawn from Mr. Cooper's letters to his mentor, English radical philosopher William Godwin. Throughout, there are descriptions of his principal portrayals at different stages drawn from contemporary accounts and theatrical reviews. There are also 22 illustrations, from paintings and engravings to playbills and photographs of the sites associated with the actor.
