The life of the English language in America has covered three hundred years, and American English--in reflecting new, complicated developments in social and economic conditions during that time--has experienced some of its most interesting changes. Language changes sporadically, and many things that seem new in American speech are actually old expressions in new surroundings. Examples and illustrations are accompanied by sources and dates, and direct quotation of passages as often as possible. The arguments over the moving forces of language change are not addressed--slang and literary usages are both influences. The American dialect is genuine when it is genuinely used--but who shall say which is the quintessentially genuine?

Grouped under four headings -- American English, Languages before English, Languages after English and Language in use -- these essays lay to rest some myths about the monolingual nature of language in America and set forth the problems that must be confronted as a consequence of language and cultural pluralism. The essays of the first group range from U.S. language heritage to black American language. The second group deals with American Indian languages and New World Spanish. The last two groups deal with ethnic language varieties and various other topics.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 2,0, Free University of Berlin (Institut für Englische Philologie), course: VS Sociolinguistics and Varieties of English II: English as a pluricentric language, language: English, abstract: Both British English and American English are interesting topics to look at but to look at them in a contrastive way is even more interesting because here you have to take the history of both varieties into consideration to see where the differences lie and why they became two distinctive varieties. Now you have to keep in mind that America was settled by British people but yet Americans now do not speak British English and then voted for their own way of speaking and pronouncing English. But how did that come? It was simply impossible not to have a different variety of English in America since English was exposed to different external factors such as other existing languages and a new environment compared to English in England and Great Britain. Hence with the Declaration of Independence in 1776 as a political separation from the mother country a linguistic separation needed to follow to finally divorce the USA from England which was important for the Americans because they wanted to have their own national identity.

After that the term American English is explained and analyzed. Further, different linguistic features, among them pronunciation, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary, are described and compared to British English. This book is a cultural-historical (rather than purely linguistic) introduction to American English. The first part consists of a general account of variation in American English. It offers concise but comprehensive coverage of such topics as the history of American English; regional, social and ethnic variation; variation in style (including slang); and British and American differences. The second part of the book puts forward an account of how American English has developed into a dominant variety of the English language. It focuses on the ways in which intellectual traditions such as puritanism and republicanism, in shaping the American world view, have also contributed to the distinctiveness of American English.
