Anna is a writer, author of one very successful novel, who now keeps four notebooks. In one, with a black cover, she reviews the African experience of her earlier years. In a red one she records her political life, her disillusionment with communism. In a yellow one she writes a novel in which the heroine relives part of her own experience. And in a blue one she keeps a personal diary. Finally, in love with an American writer and threatened with insanity, Anna resolves to bring the threads of all four books together in a golden notebook. Doris Lessing's best-known and most influential novel, The Golden Notebook retains its extraordinary power and relevance decades after its initial publication.

Ballads are a fascinating subject of study not least because of their endless variety. It is quite remarkable that ballads taken down or recorded from singers separated by centuries in time and by hundreds of kilometres in distance, should be both different and yet recognizably the same. In The English Traditional Ballad, David Atkinson examines the ways in which the body of ballads known in England make reference both to ballads from elsewhere and to other English folk songs. The book outlines current theoretical directions in ballad scholarship: structuralism, traditional referentiality, genre and context, print and oral transmission, and the theory of tradition and revival. These are combined to offer readers a method of approaching the central issue in ballad studies - the creation of meaning(s) out of ballad texts. Atkinson focuses on some of the most interesting problems in ballad studies: the 'wit-combat' in versions of The Unquiet Grave; variable perspectives in comic ballads about marriage; incest as a ballad theme; problems of feminine motivation in ballads like The Outlandish Knight and The Broomfield Hill; murder ballads and murder in other instances of early popular literature. Through discussion of these issues and themes in ballad texts, the book outlines a way of tracing tradition(s) in English balladry, while recognizing that ballad tradition is far from being simply chronological and linear.

The Ancestral Footstep is an unfinished romance novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in the late 19th century. The story follows Middleton, an American descendant of an old English family, as he embarks on a journey to England to uncover long-buried family secrets. Central to the mystery is a bloodstained footprint left in his ancestral home, a clue that compels Middleton to investigate his lineage and the hidden truths of his heritage. As he travels through the English countryside, Middleton finds himself deeply contemplating his identity and connection to the past. Along the way, he encounters various individuals who play key roles in his journey, including a mysterious old man and a captivating young woman, Alice. Their presence suggests a deeper link to the history he is trying to unravel, making his quest more than just a search for information—it becomes a path toward self-discovery. At the beginning of the novel, Middleton is filled with both hope and uncertainty about his search for his ancestral estate. He observes the landscapes and people of England, gradually realizing that his past is not merely a forgotten history but something that continues to shape his present. As he digs deeper, he finds himself entangled in family conflicts and betrayals, revealing the weight of a divided legacy that he must confront. This novel is not just a tale of investigation; it explores the significance of ancestry and the way the past influences the present. As Middleton follows the traces of history, he finds himself at the intersection of historical inheritance and personal identity, all within a setting that blends mystery with poetic reflection.
