China S English written by Bob Adamson and has been published by Hong Kong University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-04-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book traces the history of English education in the People’s Republic of China from 1949 to the present day. It uses the junior secondary school curriculum as the means to examine how English curriculum developers and textbook writers have confronted the shifting ambiguities and dilemmas over five distinct historical periods. The study of the processes of curriculum development and the products such as syllabi and textbooks offers insights into the construction of an ‘official’ English, as well as what was considered as acceptable content in English. This book addresses fundamental and significant questions concerning the English promoted in China, namely its characteristics; its changes over time and explanations for such changes; and the kind of content that has been viewed as appropriate for textbooks. To investigate these issues, the analysis draws on qualitative and quantitative data, such as interviews with principal stakeholders and analysis of the syllabus and recommended textbooks. Specifically, it looks at the choice and organization of linguistic components, and the orientation and messages of the curriculum. “Language education in China during the second half of the twentieth century might arguably be called the world’s largest language engineering project. In this comprehensive study, Dr Adamson examines a part of that project by charting the twists and turns of English language education from the pre-revolutionary period to the present. He successfully illustrates how tensions in China’s massive educational system are negotiated from center to periphery, how textbook writers adapt to the socio-political mandates of their time to construct formal school curricula. Adamson also raises significant questions regarding the contradictions inherent in Chinese globalization.” —Heidi Ross, Professor, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, School of Education, Indiana University at Bloomington “Bob Adamson has provided in this book one of the first detailed studies published in English of the history of a school subject in the PRC. The study provides fascinating insights into the changing nature of the English curriculum, the shifting socio-political context of the PRC and their complex inter-relationships.” —Paul Morris, President, The Hong Kong Institute of Education “The learning of English is a crucial aspect of China’s opening up to the world and increasingly prominent global role. This welcome volume provides an in-depth historical perspective on this important subject, including the recent periods of modernization (1978–1993) and globalization (1993 to the present). It should be compelling reading for all those involved with contemporary China across a wide spectrum of areas.” —Ruth Hayhoe, University of Toronto; President Emerita, The Hong Kong Institute of Education

This book is written for K-12 teachers and educators to understand the school experiences and life journeys of the English Language Learners (ELLs) through four Chinese ELLs by documenting their transitional experiences into an American school. Traditionally, Chinese students are perceived as the model minority in American schools who are academically successful. Yet, this book provides a new perspective by documenting the life journey and school experiences of the four Chinese ELLs. The book gives a detailed account of the four ELLs in transition from Chinese language and culture into American school and culture. Interview, observation, and documentary data at their homes and American school reflect this transitional journey. The book helps K-12 teachers and educators understand that Chinese students also come from different family backgrounds and have different previous schooling experiences. This will help teachers and educators better working with Chinese and all ELLs who adapt the new school environment. This book is reader-friendly and carefully crafted with six chapters. Each chapter focuses on one Chinese ELL with genuine research data. The book begins with an introduction to provide basic information of the four ELLs and concludes with the final chapter that provides an update on the ELL students. This book can also be used as reading texts by college students in teacher education and training programs. The book is targeted for the TESOL organizations. The TESOL has one of the largest memberships with over 12,000 members representing 156 countries (TESOL Brochure, 2017). This book also benefits various attendees of professional education conferences.

This up-close look at Chinese ESL teachers documents undertakings at formal and informal levels to support and sustain their expertise in ways that balance collaborative and competitive efforts, situated and standards-based programs, ethnically responsive and government-based efforts, and traditional and 21st-century teaching visions. English is a mandated subject for approximately 400 million Chinese public school students. Making transparent the training and professional development received respectively by pre-service and in-service teachers, this book provides a rare window into how Chinese English Language teachers (ELTs) reconcile the two needs with the responsibility to teach large numbers of students while also navigating societal, cultural, and institutional cross currents. It also explores the range of ways China invests in the training and professional development of its English language teachers.

Urban Schools And English Language Education In Late Modern China written by Miguel Perez-Milans and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-24 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Shortlisted for the 2014 BAAL Book Prize This book explores the meaning of modernization in contemporary Chinese education. It examines the implications of the implementation of reforms in English language education for experimental-urban schools in the People’s Republic of China. Pérez-Milans sheds light on how national, linguistic, and cultural ideologies linked to modernization are being institutionally (re)produced, legitimated, and inter-personally negotiated through everyday practice in the current context of Chinese educational reforms. He places special emphasis on those reforms regarding English language education, with respect to the economic processes of globalization that are shaping (and being shaped by) the contemporary Chinese nation-state. In particular, the book analyzes the processes of institutional categorization of the "good experimental school", the "good student", and the "appropriate knowledge" that emerge from the daily discursive organization of those schools, with special attention to the related contradictions, uncertainties and dilemmas. Thus, it provides an account of the on-going cultural processes of change faced by contemporary Chinese educational institutions under conditions of late modernity.
