Emperor Constantine the Great is one of the most impressive and controversial figures in world history. His decisions are a real enigma, which is masterfully unravelled in this book. His life was a series of struggles and conquests, friendships and hatreds, loves and heartbreaks, grandeur and misery, noble acts and terrible crimes, deceptions and betrayals. With the humility of a man facing his own death, he weighs it all in the balance. The last of the great emperors, he was the bastard son of Constantius Chlorus and reunified the entire Roman Empire, east and west, for the last time. He gave Christians their freedom, created the first mobile army and introduced a single currency (the Solidus, the true forerunner of the Euro). He founded Constantinople, murdered people with his own hands ... and experienced great love with Minervina, his first wife. There are great mysteries too: he was the son of St Helena but was not baptised until two days before he died; even then he found an Arian bishop to do it. He never gave up the title Pontifex Maximus, nor did he stop worshipping Mithras, the sun god. After unifying the entire empire, he had it split into four parts after his death. Delving into the life of Constantine the Great is to relive an incredible era and discover the great mystery behind his seemingly absurd and contradictory decisions. In reality, a surprising, relentless logic runs through them all, which Albert Salvado portrays with a steady hand. "The Enigma of Constantine the Great is an engaging book with aspirations to match. The book is intended for a wide range of readers who will not come away disappointed." Joan Isern. AVUI. "The Enigma of Constantine the Great is a reflection on the great questions of life and death, the value of the present, and eternity, by a person well-suited to doing so. The author holds nothing back in his portrayal of the character's dark side: his calculating mind, his loss of affection, his brutality ... There is a lot packed into this book but the skill of an accomplished author makes it easy to read." (Alvar Valls, El Periodic) Watch out for two things: one, the first edition will sell out in no time; two, it seems this eminent author will never tire of writing. What is the enigma? The enigma is resolved within the book itself. (Manel Anglada, writer, Diari d'Andorra)

“Brilliant...Timely and necessary.” —Financial Times “Especially timely as we struggle to make sense of how it is that individuals and communities persist in holding beliefs that have been thoroughly discredited.” —Darren Frey, Science If reason is what makes us human, why do we behave so irrationally? And if it is so useful, why didn’t it evolve in other animals? This groundbreaking account of the evolution of reason by two renowned cognitive scientists seeks to solve this double enigma. Reason, they argue, helps us justify our beliefs, convince others, and evaluate arguments. It makes it easier to cooperate and communicate and to live together in groups. Provocative, entertaining, and undeniably relevant, The Enigma of Reason will make many reasonable people rethink their beliefs. “Reasonable-seeming people are often totally irrational. Rarely has this insight seemed more relevant...Still, an essential puzzle remains: How did we come to be this way?...Cognitive scientists Hugo Mercier and Dan Sperber [argue that] reason developed not to enable us to solve abstract, logical problems...[but] to resolve the problems posed by living in collaborative groups.” —Elizabeth Kolbert, New Yorker “Turns reason’s weaknesses into strengths, arguing that its supposed flaws are actually design features that work remarkably well.” —Financial Times “The best thing I have read about human reasoning. It is extremely well written, interesting, and very enjoyable to read.” —Gilbert Harman, Princeton University

On the Way to Santiago de Compostela, a series of mysterious crimes harkens us back to the past and raises anguishing questions: the papal Christianity corresponds to the true Christendom or is it only that of the strongest sect to win the fight? Why the Merovingian Dynasty, that claimed to descend from Jesus Christ, was so unmercifully harassed? Why the popes ordered the Cathari to be massacred? What terrible secret resulted into the defeat and death of the Knights Templar? And, after all, what the Way to Santiago has to do with all that? Never hurting History nor assaulting verisimilitude, A. J. Barros comes down from the Roman Empire and the beginnings of Christendom to the present-day times of cell phones and Internet on a stunning speed while drawing a suspenseful, disturbing story whose read we can never stop. The First Enigma Codebreaker is the story of a man who started a revolution in cryptology and the conflict between man and machine. This is a powerful story of the life of Marian Rejewski and how history can affect individual lives, presented to the public for the first time. This examination of how Marian Rejewski changed the course of cryptology is of great interest to everyone from the avid historian to Hollywood film producers and all those in-between. As Gawlowski’s biography shows, Rejewski was an unassuming man who used his mathematical, skills as well as his extensive linguistic abilities, to start cracking the Enigma code before passing the baton on to the now renowned Alan Turing. This is a fascinating, human story about the man Marian Rejewski, which also ties up the loose threads of the Enigma story and shows the importance of the Polish involvement in that process. The First Enigma Codebreaker looks at those involved in cracking the Enigma and also takes a look at an aspect that has rarely been discussed in great detail, the story of Marian Rejewski himself, and how he endured life in post-war Communist Poland shining a light on situations such as how Rejewski managed to decode the machine, what happened to him during the Second World War, and the price he had to pay during the post war period.

If you’re a youth in 1941 living in San Francisco and a graduate of Stanford University, fluent in speech communications, especially Japanese, your talents were needed by Army intelligence immediately. If the United States went to war against Japan, intelligence realized they had very few personnel that could speak the language or understand the culture, Including Japanese Americans. Their search of universities throughout the United States turned up very sparse results. They started a school to teach the Japanese language and, if possible, the culture of the isolated country to future code breakers. The Presidio, a military post in San Francisco, was chosen to go forward immediately with the task. The next priority was to compose a cryptology dictionary of the language, similar to what Churchill had done at Bletchley Park. It was the central site for British code breakers, intercepting and decoding the German transmission. The youth of American stepped up to the challenge, including an extraordinarily talented young lady, Sue Lee Ono. She was fluent in Japanese, German, Spanish, French and understood several Chinese dialects. Sue Lee grew up in San Francisco in Japantown under the tutelage of her dear Uncle Yoshi. He taught her the knowledge of the Japanese culture and a deep understanding of the history and artifacts. Uncle Yoshi was a collector and a known authority of Asian art. Sue Lee settles into the routine at the Presidio, helping to set up a school for Japanese Americans eager to do their part for their country against the ever-present prejudice. With the bombing of Pearl Harbor, all hell breaks loose! Sue Lee is caught in a murderous past after the death of her beloved Uncle Yoshi along with the ever-changing World War!

Searching For W P M Kennedy written by Martin L. Friedland and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Deans (Education) categories.

Born in Ireland in 1879, W.P.M. Kennedy was a distinguished Canadian academic and the leading Canadian constitutional law scholar for much of the twentieth century. Despite his trailblazing career and intriguing personal life, Kennedy's story is largely a mystery. Weaving together a number of key events, Martin L. Friedland's lively biography discusses Kennedy's contributions as a legal and interdisciplinary scholar, his work at the University of Toronto where he founded the Faculty of Law, as well as his personal life, detailing stories about his family and important friends, such as Prime Minister Mackenzie King. Kennedy earned a reputation in some circles for being something of a scoundrel, and Friedland does not shy away from addressing Kennedy's exaggerated involvement in drafting the Irish constitution, his relationships with female students, and his quest for recognition. Throughout the biography, Friedland interjects with his own personal narratives surrounding his interactions with the Kennedy family, and how he came to acquire the private letters noted in the book. The result is a readable, accessible biography of an important figure in the history of Canadian intellectual life.
