Excerpt from The Enrichment of Ore Deposits The problems of superficial alteration and enrichment are not simple. Not only do the several metals segregate in different ways, but each metal may behave differently in different mineral associa tions. Every district and every deposit should be studied separately in the light of all available chemical and geologic data. There are, however, certain laws Of segregation that almost invariably are clearly indicated, and as data have accumulated many puzzling ap parent exceptions to these laws have disappeared. This paper is an amplification of, an earlier Survey bulletin on the enrichment of sulphide ores (bulletin It is a discussion of representative deposits, especially Of the paragenesis of their ores and of the principles that underlie the processes of enrichment. I hope it may suggest to those engaged in geologic work and in mining some lines Of approach to the solution of the complex problems that are encountered in the field. I realize fully that there may be serious omissions and possibly errors in the discussion of the complex problems here presented. I shall esteem it a favor if anyone whose statements I may have mis quoted or misinterpreted will set me right, and if those who have had superior opportunities for study Of certain districts will correct any wrong impressions that I may have given. Excerpt from On Pyrite and Marcasite Sir: The subject of the secondary enrichment of ore bodies is one of the most important in chemical geology, and probably also one of the most complex, because nothing like chemical homogeneity is to be an tieipat'ed at or beneath the croppings of ore deposits. A long time must elapse before the processes involved are fairly clear. The memoir by D1. II. N. Stokes Which I transmit herewith, for publication in the Bulletin series, is 2111 important contribution to this subject, describing a method for the quantitative determination of pyrite and mareasite When in mixture, and discussing some of the relations of these most abundant sulphides to those of copper. This memoir represents only a portion of Dr. Stokes's work in this field, and it is to be expected that other papers will follow as soon as practicable. Excerpt from Molybdenum; Its Ores and Their Concentration: With a Discussion of Markets, Prices, and Uses With large deposits of low-grade molybdenum ore and a latent market for molybdenum, which with development might perhaps equal that for tungsten, the United States has for years made no pro duction of molybdenum ore worthy of mention. In fact, during the decade previous to 1914, there was no output of molybdenum ore in this country except in 1905, 1906, and 1907, when a few small lots of molybdenite and wulfenite were marketed. To ascertain why this possible source of economic wealth should remain undeveloped, the United States Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation in 1914, with a view of assisting the establishment of a molybdenum industry in this country. A preliminary review of the situation showed the following conditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Lead Ores Lead, although one of the commoner of the base metals, is present in the earth's crust only to the extent of a fraction of I per cent. Of the whole. In workable deposits, however, the proportion is much higher owing to a natural concentration of material. Lead is closely associated in nature with zinc, and their primary or sulphide ores commonly occur together. Zinc ores are more soluble than lead ores, hence in the zone of oxidation the former have frequently been leached away, and practically pure lead ore may occur above water - level. In this way were formed the lead carbonate deposits of Lead ville and elsewhere. Such bodies, however, give place to mixed lead and zinc sulphides in depth. Lead in nature is also intimately associated with silver, and many lead deposits are also the repositories of valuable silver ores. Galena itself is frequently argentiferous and may be regarded as the chief source of the world's supply of silver. Excerpt from Manganese Deposits of the United States With Sections on Foreign Deposits, Chemistry, and Uses Manganiferous zinc residuum is obtained only from zinc oxide works using New Jersey manganiferous zinc ores. The manganese ores proper and the manganiferous ores are SO closely associated that even in detail it is hard to separate them. In this report, therefore, they are discussed together under the same general headings. The manganese and manganiferous ore deposits throughout the United States are largely secondary concentration deposits. Such are the ores of eastern United States, except certain rhodonite de posits, and such also are the ores in northern Arkansas, in the Lake Superior region, at Leadville and in other silver districts, and in west ern California. A few deposits of hog manganese ore occur locally, and these also are secondary concentrations. The rhodonite and rhodochrosite in the unoxidized portions of the silver veins at Butte, however, are primary concentrations, as are also the manganese sili cate veins in central Texas and elsewhere. Excerpt from Special Reports on the Mineral Resources of Great Britain, Vol. 13: Iron Ores(contd.), Pre-Carboniferous and Carboniferous Bedded Ores of England and Wales The term 'bedded ores, ' as applied to the iron-ores of pre Carboniferous and Carboniferous formations, is used to indicate beds rich in iron which form members of a stratigraphical sequence. The enrichment of such beds has been the result in some cases of subsequent alteration, in others has been con temporaneous with deposition, but in either case the ore-bodies behave as stratified deposits, as contrasted with the ores contained in flats, pipes, veins, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
