This book Environmental Trap is a testimony of my experiences that I lived while growing up in the streets, on the south side of Chicago. I witnessed first-hand, through sight and interaction with people; whose lives became entangled in different types of lifestyles, as a means of survival. I learned ways of making a living, by exploiting myself, as well as others; in order to maintain and thrive in this environment. I was able to cover myself by involving and befriending people in the environment, in my life. Once I established a bond with these powerful people: I was considered by them as almost a family member, whom they would not allow anyone to harm or misuse (example: head gang members, head Mafia leaders in Chicago, aldermen, judges, and lawyers also befriended me). In my book, I want to reveal the entrapment that I experienced as a young boy, naive, who became prey to elderly street women. They changed my whole life around. All of a sudden, I had everything that I needed and I was introduced to the vicious street life. Finding myself entrapped in a lifestyle that was dangerous...it gave me satisfaction, as well as a sense of security. One of the main reasons that I've written this book is to show young girls and boys some of the types of holes that they can fall into in the streets. When they run away from home it's not easy. I want to reveal to them that it is dangerous and horrible when you don't have the experience to survive on your own and you have to depend on others, who may cause you to lose your life.

The Progress Trap? As the name implies, it is the condition in which we find ourselves when science, technology and industry create more problems than they can solve. Often inadvertently. Many experts have warned about the resulting ecological crisis. The prophets of doom have spoken and alarm bells have sounded. Some critics are even optimistic, but they have no plan. They have not provided a detailed analysis of why humans fall into progress traps. They have not put forward what is necessary for emerging from them. Until now. Find out why societies have a tendency to become entangled in their own ingenuity. Then learn how well-equipped we humans are for resolving the environmental quandary, and other traps. Finding our way out of this predicament is a vital idea, when we learn how to nurture and use our talent for creative-problem-solving.

Environmental destruction, besides being the immediate factor in fueling competition over natural resources, can also potentially lead to loss of source of living, which may result in the population migration. In this study, an attempt has been made to develop a conceptual framework of conceivable social conflicts that are more likely to develop in an environmental migration induced scarcity situation. In order to test some of the ideas of the framework, a case study was conducted in South Asia. Since 1975, India is diverting most of the dry season flow of the Ganges River at Farakka Barrage to one of her internal rivers for her own development. It has caused various environmental problems in the south-western part of Bangladesh and led to loss of the sources of living of a large number of populations.

An examination of whether accountability mechanisms in global environmental governance that focus on monitoring and enforcement necessarily lead to better governance and better environmental outcomes. The rapid development of global environmental governance has been accompanied by questions of accountability. Efforts to address what has been called “a culture of unaccountability” include greater transparency, public justification for governance decisions, and the establishment of monitoring and enforcement procedures. And yet, as this volume shows, these can lead to an “accountability trap”—a focus on accountability measures rather than improved environmental outcomes. Through analyses and case studies, the contributors consider how accountability is being used within global environmental governance and if the proliferation of accountability tools enables governance to better address global environmental deterioration. Examining public, private, voluntary, and hybrid types of global environmental governance, the volume shows that the different governance goals of the various actors shape the accompanying accountability processes. These goals—from serving constituents to reaping economic benefits—determine to whom and for what the actors must account. After laying out a theoretical framework for its analyses, the book addresses governance in the key areas of climate change, biodiversity, fisheries, and trade and global value chains. The contributors find that normative biases shape accountability processes, and they explore the potential of feedback mechanisms between institutions and accountability rules for enabling better governance and better environmental outcomes. Growing up in New Orleans, basketball became my escape from the challenges and struggles of my childhood. As a young teenager, I quickly became known around my neighborhood as a basketball star. I was dedicated to the game and devoted much of it, practicing tirelessly to perfect my skills. Despite my love for basketball, rcouldn't shake off the allure of the street life. Growing up in a community where drug dealing, gang violence, and crime were the norm, I found myself drawn to the dangers of the streets. I found solace in the acceptance I received from the guys in the hood who idolized me for my basketball skills but also encouraged me to indulge in the street life. 'Atlanta Before I knew it, basketball was no longer my priority, and my commitment to the game began to dwindle I got involved in a dirty game, dealing drugs, and taking partaking in gang-related activities. One night, I was caught in the act and arrested. I was only eighteen years old at the time and had no idea how the events of that night would change my life forever. I was sentenced to five years in prison. It was the lowest point of my life; wasted my talents in the hood and ended up in jail for a crime I deeply regretted. While I was in prison, I was consumed with regret for the choices I made that landed me behind bars. But, I also realized that I had the opportunity to turn my life around and start over once I was released from prison. During my stay in prison, I felt a remorse for the way I had let down my loved ones and especially squandering the God-given talent that had brought me so much joy and hope.

One of the key tenets of the environmental movement is the need for greater efficiency in our use of dwindling natural resources, especially coal, natural gas, and oil. If our products are designed to be more energy efficient, so the thinking goes, our environmental impacts will be reduced and our fossil fuels will last longer. In this surprising new look at sustainability and conservation, environmentalist Steve Hallett argues that this thinking is fundamentally flawed. In fact, based on the example of coal use throughout the Industrial Revolution, more efficiency leads to more consumption, faster depletion of resources, and ultimately more stress on the planet. This is the efficiency trap. How do we avoid this trap? Hallett suggests that we focus on protecting natural resources, ecosystems, and social systems by making them more resilient. Knowing that we have reached limits to growth, we should work to decentralize energy-delivery services to give homes and communities some measure of independence. We can also build more sustainable food systems by diversifying the food-production landscape to address the vulnerabilities of the current supply chain. Efficiency does have its place in specific areas such as recycling and home insulation, but it will not work as a long-term approach to our energy dilemma. Yet recognizing the inevitable limits to our growth and the shortcomings of our current approach to addressing our dwindling resources is a necessary first step toward the establishment of sound environmental policy. This realistic appraisal of current environmental thinking will challenge environmentalists and industrialists alike.

In many ways we have never been more ‘free’. We are freer to follow our dreams, set goals and live the life we choose. Yet mental health issues are sky-rocketing. Anxiety and depression are rife and more people feel overwhelmed by daily living. We are more addictive, distracted and pressured. This is a world that increasingly seems to breed discontent. So, is all our so-called freedom nothing more than a trap of our own making? Are we, as the saying goes, simply decorating the cage that keeps us imprisoned? Does everything that flies under the banner of freedom actually promote it? What can we do to change the status quo? The Freedom Trap is an inspiring call for clear thinking and a fresh appraisal of what our freedoms mean and can become. In this challenging, confronting and eye-opening look at what freedom actually is — examined from philosophical, psychological, political, social, legal, ethical, scientific, historical and neurological perspectives — mindfulness expert Associate Professor Craig Hassed explores how we can alleviate our burdens (our worries, regrets and material desires) and find a life of peace, happiness and harmony — true freedom. Including practical thinking steps to help further your understanding of what freedom really means, this book is essential reading for anyone who has ever thought ‘there has to be more to life than this’.
