Modernismo written by Borja de Riquer and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Art nouveau categories.

Catalanmodernismo,a cultural and artistic style of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, was the Spanish equivalent of the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau, the German Werkbund and the Viennese Secession. The common denominator of these movements was the ambition to develop a new concept of beauty based on the creative essence of humankind. This comprehensive study, containing a wealth of information not previously available in English, focuses on all aspects ofmodernismo. Insightful essays discuss the geographic focus ofmodernismo,Catalonia and its vibrant capital city, Barcelona, and its historical and social context. Architecture was greatly influenced bymodernismo, and various practitioners -- Antoni Gaudiacute;, Lluiacute;s Domegrave;nech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch -- developed personal styles based on patterns inspired by nature. Painting, sculpture, and music were equally affected by the times, moving away from academicism and toward spontaneous and personal creative impulses. All essays are extensively illustrated with spectacular color photographs, showingmodernismo's most important buildings, such as Gaudiacute;'s Sagrada Familia and Palau Guuml;ell; intricate furniture, stained glass, and jewelry; graphic design, notably periodicals and sheet music; and a portfolio of paintings.

Catalonia A Cultural History written by Michael Eaude and has been published by Andrews UK Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-12 with Travel categories.

Squeezed between more powerful France and Spain, Catalonia has endured a violent history. Its medieval empire that conquered Naples, Sicily and Athens was crushed by Spain. Its geography, with the Pyrenees falling sharply to the rugged Costa Brava, is tormented, too. Michael Eaude traces this history and its monuments: Roman Tarragona, celebrated by the poet Martial; Greek Empuries, lost for centuries beneath the sands; medieval Romanesque architecture in the Vall de Boi churches (a World Heritage Site) and Poblet and Santes Creus monasteries. He tells the stories of several of Catalonia's great figures: Abbot Oliva, who brought Moorish learning to Europe, the ruthless mercenary, Roger de Flor, and Verdaguer, handsome poet-priest. Catalonia is famous today for its twentieth-century art. This book focuses on the revolutionary Art Nouveau buildings (including the Sagrada Familia) of Antoni Gaudi. It also explores the region's artistic legacy: the young Picasso painting Barcelona’s vibrant slums; Salvador Dali, inspired by the twisted rocks of Cap de Creus to paint his landscapes of the human mind; and Joan Miro, discovering the colours of the red earth at Montroig.

Singular And Plural written by Kathryn A. Woolard and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-16 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Winner of the Ramon Llull International Prize Winner of the 2017 Society for Linguistic Anthropology Edward Sapir Book Prize A vibrant and surprisingly powerful civic and political movement for an independent Catalonia has brought renewed urgency to questions about what it means, personally and politically, to speak or not to speak Catalan and to claim Catalan identity. In this book, Kathryn Woolard develops a framework for analyzing ideologies of linguistic authority and uses it to illuminate the politics of language in Spain and Catalonia, where Catalan jostles with Castilian for legitimacy. Longitudinal research across decades of political autonomy contextualizes this ethnographic study of the social meaning of Catalan in the 21st century. Part I lays out the ideologies of linguistic authenticity, anonymity, and naturalism that typically underpin linguistic authority in the modern western world, and gives an overview of a shift in the ideological grounding of linguistic authority in contemporary Catalonia. Part II examines discourses in the media surrounding three public linguistic controversies: an immigrant president's linguistic competence, a municipal festival, and an international book fair. Part III explores individuals' linguistic practices and views, drawing on classroom ethnographies and interviews with two generations of young people from the same high school. The book argues that there is an ongoing shift at both public and personal levels away from the ethnolinguistic authenticity that powered relations in the early transition to political autonomy, and toward new discourses of anonymity, rooted cosmopolitanism, and authenticity understood as a project rather than a matter of origins and essence. This shift is reflected in the current sovereignty movement.

This is an ideal introduction to the whole history of Catalonia from the remotest times until the present. It is a rigorous and accessible vision aimed at everyone, which can be read quickly and easily. The book brings the Catalan past to all Catalans and to foreigners who, when they visit Catalonia, want a general understanding of what this country has been over its thousands of years of existence. This short history seeks to set out the formation of a nation with its own state, which played a key role in Europe for centuries. It also explains how this state was attacked for two centuries until its destruction on 11 September 1714 and the subsequent struggle by Catalans to be reborn from their ashes and recover their place in history.
