"The Qur'an has been interpreted by many scholars (Muslims and non-Muslims) for centuries, and many interpretive works presently in circulation are more or less similar in tone and contents. The "Essential Message of Islam," however, is a challenging book that stands apart from the traditional interpretive works. Evolved primarily by a computer-aided scrutiny of the Qur'anic text, the book provides an invaluable source that offers eye-opening and enlightening insights to the Muslims' sacred Text, without any personal, sectarian, cultural or gender influences. The book removes any misconception about Muslim-Christian-Jewish relationships, presenting Islam as a 'Universal Religion' that promotes a peaceful coexistence of people of all faiths. A must read book for all!" -- Publisher description.

Approaching the Qur’an presents brilliant translations of the short, hymnic chapters, or Suras, associated with the first revelations to the Prophet Muhammad. These early Suras contain some of the most powerful, prophetic, and revelatory passages in religious history, offering the vision of a meaningful and just life that anchors the faith of one fifth of the world’s inhabitants. In addition to these translations, Michael Sells provides an introduction to the Qur’an, commentaries on the Suras, a glossary of technical terms, and discussions of the auditory nature and gender aspects of the Arabic text. An ideal resource for students and interested lay readers, this third edition also includes a new full Sura and associated commentary, a new preface, and a thoroughly updated bibliography.

These are quotes from the text only to give you an idea of the enormous scope of this book: The Quran contains, encoded in its very structure, the prophecy of its own future marginalization and divine warnings against it. The Quran not only says, "I am complete," but describes with surgical precision the process by which this completeness would be denied: First, the perception of insufficiency ("They sought to turn you away from what We have revealed to you, that you might invent something different against Us" - 17:73) The Straight Path Between the Two Excesses – The Call to Lay Down the Burdens of Tradition After navigating the textual complexities and historical deviations, the conclusion reached by a sincere reading of Revelation is disarmingly simple. The true path to God is not found in the elaborate theological edifices constructed over centuries by human traditions, neither on the "left" – in what tradition tells of Jesus – nor on the "right" – in what tradition tells of Muhammad. The true "straight path" (ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm) is a return to the origins, a return to the fundamental and clear covenant that God established with humanity. The Burdens of Tradition: A Repeated Pattern The Qur'an itself warns us against the process by which religions become burdened with burdens that God never imposed. The mission of the Prophet Muhammad, as described in 7:157, was precisely to "free [the believers] from their burdens and the fetters that were upon them." These "fetters" were none other than the complex laws and meticulous rituals that rabbinic and monastic traditions had added to God's simple guidance. Tragically, history has repeated itself. Traditional Islam, with its vast corpus of Hadith, its intricate schools of Fiqh, and its endless rules for every aspect of life, has created new "burdens and fetters," distancing believers from the freedom and simplicity of the Quran. Returning to the Way of Moses: The Clarity of Fundamental Principles Where, then, is the right path? It lies in returning to the core, the foundation that unites all Revelations: the simple and powerful covenant established with Moses. The Ten Commandments and the fundamental principles of the Torah represent this eternal core: The Ten Commandments (Torah Exodus 20:2-17) "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 1. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

What is so unique about Islam's scripture, the Quran? Who wrote it, and when? Can we trust its statements to be from Muhammad? Why was it written in Arabic? Does it command Muslims to fight Christians? These are a few of the thirty questions answered in this clear and concise guide to the history and contents of the Quran. Ayman Ibrahim grew up in the Muslim world and has spent many years teaching various courses on Islam. Using a question-and-answer format, Ibrahim covers critical questions about the most sacred book for Muslims. He examines Muslim and non-Muslim views concerning the Quran, shows how the Quran is used in contemporary expressions of Islam, answers many of the key questions non-Muslims have about the Quran and Islam, and reveals the importance of understanding the Quran for Christian-Muslim and Jewish-Muslim interfaith relations. This introductory guide is written for anyone with little to no knowledge of Islam who wants to learn about Muslims, their beliefs, and their scripture.

The Quran, a book which brings glad tidings to mankind along with divine admonition, stresses the importance of man’s discovery of truth on both spiritual and intellectual planes. Every book has its objective and the objective of the Quran is to make man aware of the Creation plan of God. That is, to tell man why God created this world; what the purpose is of settling man on earth; what is required from man in his pre-death life span, and what he is going to confront after death. The purpose of the Quran is to make man aware of this reality, thus serving to guide man on his entire journey through life into the after-life. The main themes of the Quran are enlightenment, closeness to God, peace and spirituality. The Quran uses several terms, tawassum, tadabbur, and tafakkur, which indicate the learning of lessons through reflection, thinking and contemplation on the signs of God scattered across the world. The present translation of the Quran and its explanatory notes are written keeping in mind these very themes. Koran, Qur'an, Coran, Kuran, Islam, Prophet Muhmmad
